The Helm & Navigation stations' design on DSC

I don't mind that stuff blows up a lot in battle necessarily. I just object to the Bridge doing it (except in specific cases, mostly when the Bridge itself is being targeted), rather that say the areas of the ship that have been hit.

The Enter-Bird of Prey-Excelsior three-way from TUC has mostly this type of explosion, and even the less justified type is mostly from the wall consoles and/or ceiling where you might imagine higher-gain power cables and the like running (unlike in the late 24th Century where the CONN (which has no reason to be running more than standard current) would do it.

It was like this in Wrath of Khan also (with the simulator as a noticeable exception). Given that Nicholas Meyer directed both of those movies and is involved in Discovery, I'm guessing battle damage will be handled in a similar manner.

If they do holographic displays, please don't make them transparent! I never understood why you'd want to see what's behind your display if you're busy looking AT the display.........and yet, I now see that design everywhere!

How about something like this? It's from the new movie project "Venus" but I'm less concerned with the details like color and graphics and more about the layout. I kind of like it. Also, while I like holographic displays, I think this does a good job in making the screens look advanced without going that route just yet in the timeline.

I like the idea of a combined Helm and Conn, with a navigation unit between the two seats/stations.

kelvin to new enterprise used the same set up, ie tos. it should be the same.

it lets them have their little buddy buddy setup as much as they want.

I'm fine with either Helm/Nav single console set-up (ala ENT, DS9 & VOY) or separate Helm and Navigation consoles (TOS inc Ambramsverse. However, if they do the former, then I think that at least the Helm console should be manned by enlisted crewmen not an officer. Also, if they follow TOS by also including "Tactical" as part of the Helm/Nav set-up then Helm should be on its own and the Navigator should target/fire the weapons as Helm has more than enough to do in a battle situation already.

In the front row it should be Helm on one side, Weapons + Short-range Sensors on the other.
  • Communications and First Officer should be immediately on either side of the Captain.
  • Navigation + Science/Analysis + Long Range Scanner stations should be in the outer ring as they are used less frequently and in less time-critical situations.
  • Chief Engineer should remain below decks at all time, lurking and skittering in the shadows. Anything less would be inappropriate on a proper ship.
  • The bartender/bar should be placed directly in front of the main viewer on the bridge, so crewmembers can watch TV as they wait for their drinks or flirt awkwardly.
If they do anything differently I AM WALKING AWAY FROM THIS SHOW.

I had hoped that ST 09 would have had the TOS style Jellybean consoles, but show them morphing into different configurations when a new operator sits down and "logs in". I figured clever hollywood people would be able to show us all the clever tech stuff that was actually happening in TOS all along, but the TV show just never showed it. So, although the bridge looked basic, it was actually so advanced you couldn't see it.

I've always imagined that 'real' starship flight control consoles would like look like studio mixing desks, with lots of incomprehensible sliders and dials and lights everywhere...

With 250 years of exponential tech advances, controls won't look anything like that, in fact, there probably won't be any controls in real-life 250 years from now.

That's some amateur-hour Kurzweiling, my friend.

250 years from now, a real starship will be a device the size of a human head containing a sophisticated computer to which hundreds or thousands of human minds will have been digitally uploaded, all of them working together in a virtual environment that might look like the interior of a ship but is really just a VR construct. They will operate the ship's functions at close to the speed of light, and due to this advantage as well as their ship's small size, they will never have to engage in combat with anyone--and if they do, they could escape quite easily. I suppose this isn't very dramatic, though.
