I think a retired Admiral/current UFP President Archer would make the most sense to have. T'Pol, maybe? I'd love to see Gary Graham, but since he was in the Prelude to Axanar (along with Tony Todd), unfortunately I think those guys are probably now blacklisted.
I dunno, I heard Tony Todd was talking about the new series as a career prospect anyway. I am not a fan of Gary Graham outside of Alien Nation so would prefer president Archer. By that point retired. Human lifespan in Trek seems around 140, is it doable?
Could have a recast Sarek or a young Tuvok of course. Or a soong.
I actually didn't mind Gary Graham as Sovol so I wouldn't mind seeing him on the new show at some point, but that's just me. And I'd love to see Tony Todd, Jeffrey Combs, Suzy Plakson, and JG Hertzler make appearances, too. But if they want to have a torch passing moment, they aren't the ones who should do it.
It really needs to be a former major cast member, but the problem is most of the series take place long after TOS. Since Discovery is as much a sequel series to Enterprise as it is a Prequel to TOS, I really have to say either Archer or T'Pol should be the ones to pass a torch. It makes the most sense to me, narratively speaking.
I love Brent Spiner, but I don't need to see another Soong. However, if there is indeed going to be a robot in Discovery (god I hope not, but there may be), we may in fact get a Dr. Soong, possibly even Noonien.
I agree. It really should be one of the enterprise leads, even if it's just an aged T'Pol looking out the window as Discovery heads out.
Tuvok hasn't been born yet. His birth comes about 20 years after DSC takes place. Although Tim Russ could play Tuvok's father (who was also in Starfleet).
And why would actors from Axanar be "blacklisted"?

Very few actors have played Vulcan characters in a convincing way ... Gary Graham was one of them, and I'd love to see him reprise that role.
There's been what...4 lead Vulcans and about 3 guest stars of note. Those aren't great odds. I just never took to him. Tim Russ, Ironically, out Vulcans Spock, but then Spock is only half Vulcan, and Tuvok is slightly atypical anyway.
I think right now I'm in the mood for a good multi-universe multi-series pass the torch moment. That would maximize the uproar. And the fanwank. But more importantly, the uproar.
Have T'Pol and Spock (played by Quinto) depart on a shuttle from USS Discovery. Or better yet, show the Scotty / Admiral Archer incident with Porthos. That will make heads explode.
I now remember posting here years ago that I wish Guinan showed up in the Kelvin universe. I no longer want that, but I'm pretty sure she could appear in Discovery warning Quinto's Spock to be careful with black holes in the future, and something about how things are supposed to be.
Or you could have an unnamed character played by Kate Mulgrew be handcuffed and exported off into a detention shuttle by Greenwood's Pike for unauthorised entry aboard a sensitive ship, and refusal to identify herself.

I'd certainly go for a pass-the-baton moment. Any of the characters that would be alive in the setting's time period would be fine, so long as there's a good reason for that character to be in that time and place. I'd rather the character not be used as a main aspect of the opening episode though.
