I guess I just can' t wrap my head around it. Data stores her programming within himself. So is she in there, & could possibly be transferred into a new body at some point? Or did he do what concerned him about Maddox's experiments, just saved the core data, & thus she was stripped of her "essence", & is basically gone, & he was just saving something of her for himself, because she "so enriched" his life? The way he puts it, it almost seems like he thinks she isn't' really lost

Her brain malfunctioned. She died. Lal's brain was unstable. Even if Data could have figured out how to design a stable brain and transfer Lal's programs into it, the resulting being would not have been the same Lal. It would have had a different personality.

Yeah, saw that. One of the reasons I no longer read the 22nd/24th century novels. That, and they're deadly dull.

They didn't even have the fortitude to stick it out the one time they made a major change. There must be a big red reset button at Pocket Books.

Yeah, she's dead! Sort of... besides nobody's dead in Star Trek, using time travel (which they have), they can revive anybody, anytime, just go back ten minutes before the time of their death, correct whatever defect that caused them to die and Voila!

Immortality for everyone, even Neanderthals (the real ones)! Nobody's dead,.. they're just in waiting of being revived.

The Cold Equations series by David Mack is fantastic - amongst the very best of the relaunch novels.

And they didn't bring Data back. Not quite...

She died in a way that gave writers an out if they ever wanted to reduce it. It's unclear whether her 'state' could be kept in cold storage like a boxed cylon.

He could use the essence of her and make a hologram version until he can fix the other problems with her inner workings.

I doubt it. I doubt they know how to make an accurate simulation of a positronic brain, which would be required to run her programs (and have the simulation resemble Lal).

It's an interesting idea, they could have employed a method similar to Geordi creating Moriarty. The holodeck has simulated Data before. Voyager took it a little further than Moriarty with the Doctor, lending some credence to the notion. Maybe a photonic version of Lal could've been used as a safe haven for her consciousness, but we'll never know because they wrote her off.
I still think they should have kept her as a regular, Lal was a good character but they reduced her to a one episode gimmick.
They could've have also brought her back (however briefly) if the Worf episode Parallels. With infinite realities, it's possible she survived in some of them.

She's dead the same way Graves was dead when Graves left Data and uploaded himself onto the 'puter. .

I felt the same way, but another poster recently advised me to read the Enterprise relaunch novels -- those preceding and during the Romulan war -- and I found them to be really fantastic. The later "Rise of the Federation" novels are also very good. Can't say much for the 24th century, but the 22nd seems to be in good hands these days.

I wish I could agree. Made it about halfway through Uncertain Logic and the small universe syndrome killed it for me, not to mention that I find Christopher Bennett's writing style incredibly dry and not entertaining.
