The Motion Picture

The Wrath of Khan, I dont think I need to explain lol

I always loved the Search For Spock as well, my favorite scene is when Kirk steals the Enterprise to go back to Genesis, and Scotty sabotages the Excelsior

The Undiscovered Country was actually my introduction to TOS, I was a whopping 1 year old when the movie came out, but as I grew up with TNG, it didnt take long for me to get curios about the Original Star Trek....I remember parents and I renting TUC at the video store, I couldnt have been more than 3 or maybe 4 years old....so I have an extra bit of nostalgia for this movie

The Final Frontier, despite it's flaws, is an underrated movie...then again, this was the second TOS I ever saw...so I may have a slight bias

The Voyage Home, I kinda hate ranking it so low, because I really like this movie too, its got alot of good humor in it...the only reason I rank it below TFF is because TFF was one of the first TOS anything I ever saw, whereas TVH was the last movie I saw, and I had already gotten well into the series, so sentimentally I pick TFF over this

The Motion Picture, bores me to death...sorry to anyone who likes it, but it does, I can barley sit through it....easily the worst Star Trek movie (aside from the JJ ones)

The Wrath of Khan.

For me, it catches the essence of the series better than any of the other films. The chemistry between Kirk and Spock is wonderful, in my opinion, and the rivalry between Spock and McCoy is ever present and leads to the emotional ending perfectly.

Ricardo Montalban portrays a man gripped in the throes of madness, hellbent on, a perfectly understandable, revenge, which makes the character that more believable.

That's not to say it's without its flaws, continuity errors, plot oversights etc, but what film doesn't have flaws?

The Motion Picture is my favourite standalone film. However, because I see TWOK, TSFS & TVH as chapters of the same story, I'd have to rank those three films as the highlight of the series.

I love them all. The only film I'd call bad is TFF, and even I find that to be underrated. It has some very heartfelt and wonderful moments in it, and it's directed by Shatner which is fucking great.

The best is undoubtedly unquestionably TWOK. It's a classic and a wonderful piece of filmmaking. If I was to show just one of the films to anyone, it'd be this one.

As to my favourite? My mind changes a lot on that. TMP, TWOK, TVH, TUC... flip a coin twice and you'll get my answer.

My problem with TWOK is Kirk's ex and the kid. So bland and boring. When they're on screen without the main cast, the film drops a couple of levels to barely watchable.

I know many will go with TWOK, but I think TUC has it edged out. The others pretty much suck. lol
For me it goes:

The wratn of kahn

Undiscovered country8

The search for spock

The voyage home

Startrek 5 (which i dont view as cannon)

The motion picture.

Counting all films :

The wratn of kahn
Undiscovered country
First contact
The search for spock
Beyond
Generations
Startrek (jj)
The voyage home
Into darkness
Insurrection
Nemisis
Startrek 5

The motion picture.

I don't agree. I actually thought Final Frontier was better. I could never get past those awful uniforms from the Motion Picture. In fact, I don't even remember what that movie was about...

Well it bouls down to:

-Flying round the enterprise in a shuttle for a quater of the film in some kind of fan wank.

-someone gets fried in a transporter (best bit)

-a trippy light show.

- bald chick gets kidnapped the returned

-teach bald chick what it is to be human (yawn)

-more trippy light show

-old probe found

- the end

1. TSFS is my top one. A tale of self sacrifice well executed, as Kirk jettisons his career, his ship and loses his son in an act of friendship and the rest of the crew are tested and not found wanting. Kruge is cool too. Crude but cool.

2. TWOK, just gotta love Ricardo M. The film is well paced, tense and ends on a poignant note. Nimoy acts well in this film, Kelley has some good scenes too.

3. TFF. The observation deck scenes are on par with anything in the movies. The way Sybok throws Spock is a touch I like. But there's so much garbage in this film too, it weeeeeighs it down..

4. TUC, I think it's a fine, good way to end the TOS movie run. Perhaps Shatner's antipathy towards the Klingons is overplayed but I'm happy with it all in all. I kind of wish this was Shatner's last outting.

5. TVH, A very 80-esque romp and a nice antidote to the intensity of the two previous films.

I'm not sure where I'd put TMP. For me, it defies ranking. I kinda just like to think of it as in a category in its own right. It's very nichey but I'm fond of it as it my first experience of Trek. I dunno. It's neither my favourite nor my least favourite, it kinda just bobs around my rankings from one day to the other, lol.

I voted Final Frontier. It seemed lonely.

The one I rewatch most is Khan, though now I finally have the theatrical cut of TUC, it may go into top rotation (though I don't usually watch more than one or two TOS films a year--it could take a while to catch up). I have watched all of them this year, though, as a kind of 50th commemoration (no time to get through the series).

Im going to say none of them..if anything, they all left me cold. They had none of the humour and camp that made t9he series so awesome...if anything, they were a prequel to TNG, because they all took themselves way too seriously. Don't get me wrong, I love TNG, but it definitely took itself too seriously 90% of the time...and I love the current films because they capture that original fear/funny perfectly..

Seems like you've never watched The Voyage Home. The Search for Spock, The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country are all fairly humorous too.

I will rewatch them at your recco....I did not find any of them funny at the time, but I am willing to watch again with an open mind.

I put them all in for context.

1. STB
2. ST09
3. STID
4. STII- It's just, better...at everything.

5. STFC
6. STIV- Fun, well made, well meaning.
7. STNEM
8. STIII- Dark horse. I have re-watched this often.
9. STVI- Not bad, but not great. Bargain Trek.
10. STINS
11. STTMP- Epic. What's worth watching is great. The rest: zz
12. STGEN
13. STV- So so bad. Abysmally bad. Worst-movie-of-the-decade-nominated bad. The Plan 9 of Trek movies except Plan 9 is funnier.
