"Self-flagellation is exactly what it is, that was a good call. What they think they're getting out of it, I don't know. The Shat's always been somewhat self-depreciating in his humour, though. I'm sure this "Apology" Device is multi-functional, however. If the movie's currently out, or being released/re-issued for home-viewer consumption, then such platitudes may be argued to help sales, possibly. Even in the sense of just having a new angle to bring the film up again, to keep it in the headlines.
Apologising for it, even years later, might also serve to make whatever auteur appear to be more "Human" ... more approachable and accessible. This might work to their advantage in the sense of simply having something "new" to say on it, as well. I have a hard time remembering what I had for breakfast 2 and a half weeks ago, much less all of this detailed information on a project I was working on, years ago. I guess an "apology" makes for a better interview than responding with, "wow ... you know what? It's been so long, I really don't remember anything about that." But I do wish that they'd let the apology angle go, there are very few who could pull that shit and make it sound sincere, anyway.

As the other poster said, it's basically the entire DVD commentary track, but if you google "Joel Shumacher apologizes for Batman and Robin" you'll get a lot of interviews where he discusses it. Also he made no secret about wanting the fourth movie to be a dark take on the character but was overruled by WB. Now if this is true or not is anyone's guess, but you gotta wonder if he wanted to go dark but was overruled, he went almost completely in the opposite direction with the film we got.
Yet, it would be so fitting as Batman is a very dark character to begin with.
Admittedly, you can see trace amounts of darkness in Batman and Robin. If you get drunk and squint. And possibly slam your head against the wall a few times.
Alfred's illness, Mr Freeze's Heart of Ice scenes, the villains plot line ending with Freeze being given free reign to torture Ivy... etc, are played somewhat seriously. If you're the generous type, you could even say there's some genuine emotion in them.
They're just surrounded by a lot of...fluorescence.

BATMAN & ROBIN had the same problem that THE FINAL FRONTIER had, which is a specific director having too much say, too much control, over a franchise movie. THE VOYAGE HOME also qualifies, despite its having been a financial success. Creatively, TVH is absolute shite. There's no getting around it - it's a bad movie. Almost invariably, this happens when a director is allowed to make 'his' movie, after having done a good job working hand-in-hand with the studio. BATMAN RETURNS did such phenomenal things with the Catwoman character, I truly am in awe of this movie, for that very reason. But everything else kind of sucks, but again, that's a situation of Tim Burton having done a good job with the first BATMAN, that now, he's given the keys.
And I have to admit, if I were president of a Major Motion Picture Studio, I would be glad to just back off and leave a picture in seemingly capable hands. It's almost like a Catch22, though. Collaboration often brings fantastic results. Look at the first STAR WARS movie, from '77. Though terribly dated, now, it's still got legs ... and you can kind of tell that George Lucas is not the only one in the cockpit, during the making of it. Others are there, exerting influence, giving the picture a wonderful sophistication that's sorely lacking in any of Lucas' later efforts - particularly, the prequels. Though Shatner did not have a previous "win" to base TFF on, TVH kind of did that for him ... by extension. He was given a free pass because after TVH was a hit, the studio thought STAR TREK was like STAR WARS, able to get away with anything, because of the brand. But as audiences soon discovered: it was dead wrong ...

Somebody elsewhere in the thread brought up J.J.Rebootrams apology on lens flares and it occured to me, what if he had apologized like The Shat did?

I like The Final Frontier, It's not the best Star Trek movie. It certainly has it's flaws, but the character moments are all pretty solid sans some corny jokes. Mr. Shatner doesn't need to apologize. However their are quite a few people who need to apologize for the abomination known as Star Trek: Generations. I can never forgive it for the death of my Captain.
