This is a special promoting NBC's 1966 fall lineup of shows, including a new show called Star Trek. Clips are shown from WNMHGB, with "comic" commentary by the Burns and Schreiber comedy team.

Any film clip from TOS is cool. I realize that NBC thought they were doing the correct thing in cancelling Star Trek, but they sure killed the goose that laid the golden egg, considering how ST has flourished and profited since that time.

Star Trek's life in syndication and beyond was much more to the benefit of Paramount Television (later, CBS Studios, Inc.) than it was to the benefit of NBC. NBC had a small amount of profit participation; Paramount owned the show.

If anything, the entity that looks short-sighted is Paramount, which slashed the budget of the show's third season in search of short-term profitability. Of course, who could have predicted what would become of Star Trek in 1968?

It's a shame the video posted by the OP, or at least the Star Trek relevant portions of the video, aren't on a home video release. The Lost in Space Blu-Ray set has an excerpt from a similar network promotional film for that series, sourced from the original film elements.

Solow/Justman relate how angry new Paramount/Desilu owner Charles Bluhdorn was when he visited the ST set, specifically at how the director was doing multiple takes when Bluhdorn thought 1 shot was good enough. The new 'corporate mindset' that Solow mentions had taken over the studio.

Exactly. Or the original promos like this one, which is my one of my favorites:

Love how in that NBC promo, STAR TREK was billed as "the first adult space adventure." Despite how Trek later came to be viewed, the show was certainly not originally intended to be a "family show" or a "kiddie show." It was intended to be an adult action-adventure drama.

More promos from that time:

There's a decent amount of footage from WNMHGB that didn't make it into the final broadcast. Also, they play the intro music that leads into the main title. Again, that wasn't used in the final broadcast. What a cool find! Thanks for sharing!

They basically gave away the whole plot of WNMHGB in that.

I was always fond of Alexander Courage's alternate STAR TREK intro music used in WNMHGB. There's also a very eerie quality to the music used in that second pilot.

Why does that promo say "Thursday, September 15th"? Did Trek premiere a week later than we've been told?

September 8 was a "preview" showing.
