This would solve the problem of aging actors, or even soundalikes who look nothing like the characters.

You could use the same kind of animation for characters as Polar Express - motion capture. I'm surprised this hasn't happened already.

Could someone change the title to "Animated Trek movie"? I pressed post too fast.

Problem is Polar Express looked very Uncanny Valley. I think a stylised look would work better - see the Star Wars animated series. I'm very much not against the idea though.

I'd be all for a Trek series with a new ship and new characters that's aimed younger, I think if good it'd be a great way to get the young 'uns watching the movies. But animateds in place of live-action Trek? Nu-uh.

Gene Roddenberry proved that doing a new series is possible. We should move on and do interesting stories.

I hope it never happens! Polar Express has such ugly animation. I tried watching it once, but those zombies turned me off after only a few minutes. I am all for a normal animated Star Trek series though.

Polar Express is just a (dated) example. You can do amazing mo-cap animation these days that doesn't look creepy.

I personally would love a cutesy Trek cartoon, telling good stories but in a fun animated style like the Nick TMNT. (But maybe without the anime style quirks.)

    Or something like this...

As CGI becomes more advanced, it should definitely become possible to recreate TOS or TNG or whatever. I'd be fine with that-- if done well, of course.

I think they used it to some extent on the 2013 alternate reality video game.

Yeah, I'd rather they not attempt realism with a theoretical Trek animated movie/show. At this point, productions like that always rest at the bottom of the Uncanny Valley and it weirds me out. And I'd rather they have a brand new show with a brand new crew/ship than to make an animated film/show using TOS or TNG characters. Branch out!

I wouldn't be averse to new characters or ships. But if a guest opportunity came along, there would be less of a time commitment/more flexible to record a voice alone or with one other person rather than film in one room with everybody assembled together.

I would love to see a new Trek animated series, especially one done in a style similar to Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Rebels. I would much rather see that than a ultrarealistic style.
I did enjoy Polar Express and Beowulf, but I honestly find doing CGI for something that can easily be done in live action unnecessary. I don't mind it for characters like Gollum or Maz Kanata, or for video games but not for hyper realistic regular people.
I'm still disappoined we never got Final Frontier, that seemed like it had a lot of potential.

Dr. Who animation might be a good model for Star Trek.

I think if Star Wars got The Clone Wars, Rebels and The Freemaker Adventures, there's no reason why Star Trek couldn't have something similar.

With animation, anyone could appear too.

Motion capture is how I always imagined Brent Spiner doing Data again.

I'm not sure what you mean?
It was a new series set farther in the future with no real connections to any of the old shows. It was going to be a webseries posted to the official Star Trek website.

I'm ready for Seth MacFarlane to make an adult animated comedy Star Trek series in the style of Family Guy.

I think you're onto something. Not necessarily in the vein of Family Guy, but MacFarlane is a major Star Trek fan, an animation powerhouse, and has a career of getting several shows to air and showrunning them for years. I was one of the few who thought he would've done a good job a few years ago when he tried to resurrect The Flintstones.

I was really disappointed we didn't get to see his The Flintstones.
I would love to see McFarlane do an animated Star Trek series. I don't know if I'd want it to go full on Family Guy, but it would still be interesting to see what he would do with the franchise.

I think the only way we will see a Star Trek animated movie if its direct to video and doesn't have super expensive animation, something similar to the animated DC films, I don't think we would ever see an animated Star Trek movie in theaters with a huge budget.

I think we would see an animated Trek only if TPTB thought it would be cheaper than live action JJTrek.

    Much cheaper.

    So, no super expensive animation.
