Yep, it even parrots the James and Vic didn't get sued because they're just playing dress-up line.
Most of those "editorials" are basically off the same script

They could stand to grow up. Trek is a sweet accomplishment for what it is. But it is a teleplay with owned formulas. Not the one and only vision of the future. After a point, they should direct their idealism at some important goal of the extant world rather than clinging to a bunch of stories. Especially their pewpew variant.

I think with the proper care/writing/direction - "Midway/Saving Private Ryan in space" could be done and could be used as a vehicle to explore deeper, thornier topics very much relevant to the world of today. Lord Alec (and most of his surrogates/acolytes) is obviously too arrogant & greedy to ever pull such a thing off though.

Axanar exploring deeper issues of society? Trying to open a rift right here on the page? :wtf::cool:

haha If Gossett hadn't been booted so abruptly and had been given more creative latitude, who knows? (from the way he talked in that TrekZone interview, he made it sound like Axanar could've been something more than a fan's superficial wet dream...........). Either way, war still has relevance as a story telling vehicle, just not in the way that these particular fans would expect I think

I think the general consensus on this thread is sorrow that Axanar was never made. It would have been a plain Jane, derivative, repetitive, wish fulfillment based story, but the graphics and sets would have been rather spectacular.

I've seen some of Christian's concepts for Axanar, and they're pretty cool. Whatever inherent script problems it might've ended up with, I have no doubt the "look and feel," as shepherded by Christian, would be good.

I was really looking forward to seeing Tony Todd.

Well, at least the graphics. From what I saw on the on-line tours, the sets weren't anything special, no better than New Voyages / Continues sets.

As was I. Personally, I think more people wanted to watch it based on HIS performance than anything else, EVERYTHING else, about the film.

Yes, exactly. I was very surprised Tony had left months earlier but it wasn't general knowledge until after the lawsuits. That's when I found out, after the fact. I wonder how much money LFIM raised from Tony's name alone. IMO, that's false advertising on LFIM's part.

Over time I have come to feel good writing is overwhelmingly important, because trivial stories fritter away the life of the viewer, and in fact of everyone involved.

While any context could yield great stories, my own feeling is that showing things blowing up is almost always used for emotional investment and gratification rather than story, and it can easily get out of hand. Case in point having half your film be about a ridiculously large number of ships flying ridiculously close together blowing each other up.

I would love to see the veteran Trek actors get more gigs, and its a shame they are banned from the short fan films. Perhaps this will change once the form matures. But I am not sure I would wish those actors the fate of being a great actor in a terrible movie: http://www.ifc.com/2015/05/when-bad-movies-happen-to-great-actors etc.

A bad effect can be forgiven if the story being told is fantastic. This is absolutely what brought people back every week for a show like Doctor Who back in the 60s and 70s. The shoestring budget was obvious, but damn if they weren't trying to tell a good story most of the time.

And if Gossett is to be taken at his word, that's all Prelude would have been had it not been rewritten a few times. Tech-tech about ships and CGI space battles. At least Prelude had some emotion in it, derived from war documentaries. At least.

Wrath of Khan I think delivers the most satisfying of the action we ever saw in the Trek films because every sequence was setup by the narrative, and every engagement had fairly major consequences. It kept the "sheer spectacle" to a minimum and instead focused on using everything to drive the narrative, character, and themes.

It's not the size of your sets that count but what you film in them.

Size or quality. You can pain some plywood and tape on a few decals, call that your bridge, and i'll watch if the story you're trying to tell is at least engaging on some level.

I love rewatching Exeter's Savage Empire because it is so obvious that they used everything they had to achieve what they wanted. They didn't have a bridge! But they managed to green screen a chair and a couple of actors and make it look semi-convincing. They strived to achieve what they needed to and get across a quintessential Classic Trek story.

Making fan films is all about making it work and having fun.

This is pretty much what I was trying to get at :)
