We find the idea of old characters comforting. Then when they show up we nitpick every aspect of the new actor's performance.

That's probably the best option. Maybe the Colombia in an off-hand homage to ENT.

I was just thinking that she and Kirk could be dating at the start of the film. (If you wanted to small-universe it, make her Paris's younger sister, who set them up.) The film opens similar to STB, where they're trying to escape some kind of pickle together and she has to save his ass. Then she does again at the end of the film in a TUC style battle.

I don't know why, but I kind of like the idea of him being put in his place by an older, more experienced captain. Besides, I think it's about time to see a masculine male lead dating someone older.

It's just one of those silly Hollywood perception things that really annoys me. I think they're only like eight-or-something years apart. But, normally, the idea of a guy in his 30s dating a woman in her 40s would be despite the fact, if their ages were reversed, no one would think twice about it.
