Rewatching Voyager

People are still participating, @stardream and I keep posting on a regular basis and @Archimago isn't here because he has problems with his computer. Occasionally other people drop a line or two, too. I guess your thread is too Voyager-friendly for most people's taste, that's why the silence. (Just look at my thread, hardly anyone posts anything any more.)
Well, I'm a very critical Trek viewer, and VOY isn't exactly a favourite of mine. My favourites are in order: TOS-ENT-DS9-TNG-VOY, although ENT and DS9 are almost equal, and the same for TNG and VOY. For many years I've been doing reviews of the episodes, on and off. Abovethread I did post some VOY ones from the fifth season, as I've started a rewatch again (although these past few weeks I've paused). But if people here would like it I could post my old VOY reviews of seasons 1-4. Be warned though, as I said, I am very critical and bluntly honest in my opinions.

I don't like going into series forums bashing a series. Besides I wouldn't be rewatching voyager if I didn't like it. The sole reason I'm doing this is because it's been at least 5 years since I've watched the series as a whole.

Actually, it's more tough love than series bashing, IMO.

You could always start your own thread and see how that turns out.
I'm different, if I'm "critical" of something, I don't usually like writing about it. I prefer talking about things that I like.
Also, I'm doing the wallpaper thread and there's a reason for that: I find it much easier to express myself in pictures.
In any case, I would start a new thread if I were you. There are a lot of people who criticize this show so I guess yours would be a popular one.
Just an idea, of course.

OK, I'll think about it. I don't want to "hijack" someone else's thread.

I'm kinda the opposite. I think it's fun to pick things apart, even things I like, and as a Trek fan I naturally love Star Trek. Like @locutus101 said, it's a tough love. Just gushing about things isn't my cup of Earl Grey, Hot.

Please don't misunderstand me. I'd rather watch even a bad episode of Star Trek than some mediocre crime show/sitcom/drama or one of those gawdawful "reality" shows.

Just started watching voyager on hulu. Ive never seen voyager or enterprise so i figure instead of rewatching episodes of tos on blu ray that i start watching VOY since ive never watched it before. Ive watched the first 2 episodes and on the third. So far its ok..but it does have too much of a been there done that feel. The show isnt bad its just nothing new really..not yet. Does it get better with time? Im not feeling the characters yet at all. Here hoping it gets more engaging..

Survival Instinct

This is such a great episode, and you can tell it has Ron Moore's hand prints all over it. No science tech, no ship to ship battles, just a pure character story involving Seven and one of her away missions. I loved the conflict of conscience she had in this episode, and her talk with The Doctor about survival being insufficient was "Someone to Watch Over Me" well done. There is just a great chemistry between Ryan and Picardo that I really enjoy, and watching these episodes close together, I'm finding myself enjoying it more. Even though it once again goes against what we know about the Borg, I have always wondered what happens when Borg go on away missions. We didn't get much of a hint in I, Borg, but they are severed from the collective and it makes sense why. To have that drive this plot about characters wanting to fully experience individuality was just very well done.

Like I said earlier, I just can't get enough of the borg. I wish they'd made three times as many borg episodes - they are all intriguing. This includes SURVIVAL INSTINCT, which is, again a gem. A big plus for me is that borg-heavy episodes easily lend themselves to making wallpapers.
BRIEF CANDLE - a short story in the DISTANT SHORES anthology - is a follow-up to the episode. It is about how Marika Willkarah (sp.?) spent that last one month of her life aboard the Voyager. It is a Harry-centered story.

I agree, I really enjoy the Borg episodes. Of course one of the biggest criticisms I've seen of Voyager was that they had too many Borg episodes.

No, I think the major criticism is that they have weakened the borg and nearly turned them into a joke at the end of Voyager.

I don't know if I would say they 'weakened' the Borg. What they did was give us more information about them. The more you know about a villain, the less scary they become. You find out about what makes them tick and all their weaknesses. The thing is, though, if you don't find out more about them then they become boring and cartoonish.

You have to find the right balance. I think when they went overboard was when they got assimilated on purpose. That was a bit too much.

It would be like a vampire movie where people would turn into vampires on purpose and then get back to their human selves.

Except for the bit where Tom gets his rank back I don't have much good to say about Unimatrix Zero.

I think Voyager was able to explore the Borg more while keeping them scary. Any time they went up against them, they always did so with caution and fear. I believe with the exception of Unimatrix Zero they only really went up against small ships and damaged ones.
