The Domestic Box Office run is ending, International is kicking in.

There have been so many great films released recently with lower budgets, that this may not be a bad thing. As long as they make up for it with a good story and character development, I'm all for it.

Well, paramount is releasing another sci-fi film called "Arrival" in November, I recall reading somewhere (Wikipedia, just checked) that the budget for this movie was only 50 million or so, I have no Idea if that's the final budget or not, but obviously that's pretty low for a sci-fi film by a major studio. I wonder if this film does well in the box office, if it will change anything about the new star trek film.

We don't know how much of Beyond's $185m budget actually went on Orci's unmade ST3. We know from Justin Lin that "money was spent", and we know from various articles online that Bad Robot scouted South Korea as a shooting location, put concept artists to work designing ships and weapons and began pre-vis of action sequences.

I wonder (IF the unmade ST3's budget is part of STB's budget) if Paramount will take that into account when calculating profit margins.

Damn just those little pieces of info has me wishing that had been 'Beyond' >:(

According to Deadline:

South Korea opened with $5.6m (up 50% from STID)
France opened with $2.1m (down 38% from STID)
Spain opened with $987K (down 22% from STID)

For reference France and Spain are countries that did not jump significantly from Star Trek 2009 to Star Trek Into Darkness (Spain actually dropped a little). These three countries opened with $8.69 for STB compared to $8.37 for STID with South Korea being the cause of the overall increase.

Worldwide cume now stands at a hair over $231 million.

Movieweb commented on Paramount issues basically stating that this year has been largely a failure for the studio and that 2017 isn't expected to be any better. They said Star Trek Beyond domestic box office has been seen as a surprise disappointment and it's enough to leave the future of the movie franchise in question. One interesting note in the last two days there has been some major changes in the domestic-marketing department at Paramount including a new co-president which is seen as a sign that Paramount is placing some of the blame of its movie failures on their marketing department.

Paramount is heavily invested in the movie doing good box office in Asia. It needs to earn big bucks in China in particular or the future of the franchise is most defiantly in question now.

Pre-production for a big blockbuster movie preproduction including scripts, design and location scouting would probably be in the $20 - $ 30 million dollar range.

How can they be surprised? Long term forecasting was predicting an opening of 40-45m because the buzz either wasn't there or was negative. They released a shit trailer and then had the writers/director start having to do damage control about it because of the overwhelming negativity.

The only reason it managed to open at 60m was the marketing blitz in the week or two before release.

I don't disagree with you. Early projections for Beyond were lower than the projections that came about in the days before opening weekend thanks in part to the last minute positive reviews.

The big problem for Beyond was not it's opening weekend but rather the drastic drop in box office between the opening and subsequent weekends.

Beyond held on quite well this weekend, still managing $4 million in the US, in an ever more crowded marketplace (note, that's just under half what Ben Hur made on its opening weekend). Maybe it can squeeze out another $10 million there for a $160 finish? Also, it's done well in South Korea over the weekend, suggesting that it might have legs when it opens in China, where they've gone all out on the marketing it seems (check out TrekCore's article). It really does all come down to China when all is said and done. If it can do $150 million there, then there's nothing to worry about. The film will have made around $400 million worldwide and shown growth in the Chinese market, which is going to be worth as much, if not more than the US market going forwards.

As Kirk said in TSFS, "I swear to you, we're not finished yet."

$400 million worldwide? I hope so but I think it's unlikely. Probably $350 million

It's pretty funny that so many fans consider that first trailer to be shitty.

I'm more surprised if there were many people who liked it. There are so many exciting and interesting teaser trailers being released these days. The form and quality has really progressed in recent years, at least for certain studios. You can build up a ton of interest with a good trailer or kill any momentum with a confusing or forgettable one. STB fell in the latter. There was only moderate to low buzz generated by the early teaser trailer . . . . and a lot of that was negative (not what studios are gunning for). A total fumble for the Paramount marketing department. If any franchise could use a solid boost to get things rolling it's a niche franchise like Star Trek.

Star Trek Transformers crossover. Problem solved.

Where the heck was that at the end of Nemesis?

"Take that, Romulan dog. And now it's your turn, Megatron. Engage!"
The creator of this custom Transformer had even penned a backstory for it:
Story
Knowing the war with the Borg was nearly won, Picard was on a mission far from home to eliminate any known remaining Borg when the Enterprise E happened upon a strange and unresponsive Borg cube. An away team was sent, and returned with the unusual news that all systems except life support on the enemy ship were down, nothing was moving, and the structure of the ship altogether had differences that did not register as Borg technology, or anything even recorded in the Starfleet database.
The team also brought back the Borg primary computer core module and a strange metal relic with alien runes etched across it, which was assumed to be part of the new tech the Borg must have assimilated that caused their shut down.
Before leaving the area, the disabled ship was destroyed, but it took a surprising number of quantum torpedoes and phaser streams to finally do so, as it seemed to self repair at an alarming rate.

Within a few days, the Enterprise crew had deciphered enough of the Borg computer data to have the coordinates of the relic's origin, and a course was set at warp 9 to reach a never before explored sector of space. With any luck, they would locate a new planet with life and discover what the Borg were up to.
The journey was long even at top speeds, and over the days the crew began to report odd structural changes in various locations all over the ship with no one claiming responsibility for any of them. Geordi confirmed that entire ship was indeed changing, but it all seemed to be upgrades and everything new was made from an incredibly strong new metal, quite similar to the alloy the relic was made from.

Picard feared the alien device might be attempting to take over the ship, and ordered it jettisoned immediately, but none of the doors to airlocks or transporter rooms and controls would open. As the crew tried to stay calm and analyse the situation, the ship eventually shut down completely, except for life support and artificial gravity...

For nearly 36 hours the ship sat in darkness, its crew terrified and helpless to do anything at all as the ship slowly grew new parts and systems before their eyes. The enterprise got longer, its shield matrix became at least twice as powerful, 4 new powerful impulse engines twisted into shape under the rear of the saucer section that would surely improve maneuverability greatly , and the computer seemed to be reading through all of its own information over and over... Until nearly everything simply came back online.

Picard was back in control, and everything seemed back to normal aside from the obvious improvements, communications were still down, and the computer seemed to now be possessed. Both Picard and Riker had many questions, but the computer would only say "I will protect you. You must reach Cybertron.", over and over.
With little other choice, they resumed their course.

Arriving sooner than expected, the Enterprise came upon a metal planet which was surrounded by over a dozen Borg cubes! Knowing there was little chance to defeat them alone, the Captain tried to change course and go to warp, but a powerful, rumbling voice over the ship intercom said, "Trust me, friends" and suddenly everyone in the saucer section was teleported to the main body of the ship, the captain and high ranking crew members in their respective positions on a new and improved battle bridge.
Everyone braced themselves as the ship shook and jolted, its parts moving around to a drastically new configuration as the Borg ships closed in and opened fire.
Soon, the Enterprise had become a enormous humanoid robot, easily dispatching the Borg ships one after another, some cleaved with the plasma blade on its right arm, some crushed into one another by the huge shield mounted on its left arm, and many destroyed by the phaser banks in its eyes, and the quantum and photon torpedoes that fired from its right shoulder and chest.
The bridge crew witnessed on screen the amazing show of power until not one Borg ship remained.

There was no doubt now, the ship was alive, and was a more than welcome ally to the Federation.

"Who... are you?" Picard asked.
The voice over the intercom answered him. "I am NCC-1701-E. I am the Starfleet Soverign class ship, Enterprise. I am... an Autobot."
"Autobot E, then" Riker said with a sly smile.
