The Domestic Box Office run is ending, International is kicking in.

Well, paramount is releasing another sci-fi film called "Arrival" in November, I recall reading somewhere (Wikipedia, just checked) that the budget for this movie was only 50 million or so, I have no Idea if that's the final budget or not, but obviously that's pretty low for a sci-fi film by a major studio. I wonder if this film does well in the box office, if it will change anything about the new star trek film.

 

We don't know how much of Beyond's $185m budget actually went on Orci's unmade ST3. We know from Justin Lin that "money was spent", and we know from various articles online that Bad Robot scouted South Korea as a shooting location, put concept artists to work designing ships and weapons and began pre-vis of action sequences.

I wonder (IF the unmade ST3's budget is part of STB's budget) if Paramount will take that into account when calculating profit margins.

According to Deadline:

South Korea opened with $5.6m (up 50% from STID)
France opened with $2.1m (down 38% from STID)
Spain opened with $987K (down 22% from STID)

For reference France and Spain are countries that did not jump significantly from Star Trek 2009 to Star Trek Into Darkness (Spain actually dropped a little). These three countries opened with $8.69 for STB compared to $8.37 for STID with South Korea being the cause of the overall increase.

Worldwide cume now stands at a hair over $231 million.

 

Movieweb commented on Paramount issues basically stating that this year has been largely a failure for the studio and that 2017 isn't expected to be any better. They said Star Trek Beyond domestic box office has been seen as a surprise disappointment and it's enough to leave the future of the movie franchise in question. One interesting note in the last two days there has been some major changes in the domestic-marketing department at Paramount including a new co-president which is seen as a sign that Paramount is placing some of the blame of its movie failures on their marketing department.

Paramount is heavily invested in the movie doing good box office in Asia. It needs to earn big bucks in China in particular or the future of the franchise is most defiantly in question now.

Pre-production for a big blockbuster movie preproduction including scripts, design and location scouting would probably be in the $20 - $ 30 million dollar range.

How can they be surprised? Long term forecasting was predicting an opening of 40-45m because the buzz either wasn't there or was negative. They released a shit trailer and then had the writers/director start having to do damage control about it because of the overwhelming negativity.

The only reason it managed to open at 60m was the marketing blitz in the week or two before release.

 

It's pretty funny that so many fans consider that first trailer to be shitty.

 

I don't disagree with you. Early projections for Beyond were lower than the projections that came about in the days before opening weekend thanks in part to the last minute positive reviews.

The big problem for Beyond was not it's opening weekend but rather the drastic drop in box office between the opening and subsequent weekends.

Beyond held on quite well this weekend, still managing $4 million in the US, in an ever more crowded marketplace (note, that's just under half what Ben Hur made on its opening weekend). Maybe it can squeeze out another $10 million there for a $160 finish? Also, it's done well in South Korea over the weekend, suggesting that it might have legs when it opens in China, where they've gone all out on the marketing it seems (check out TrekCore's article). It really does all come down to China when all is said and done. If it can do $150 million there, then there's nothing to worry about. The film will have made around $400 million worldwide and shown growth in the Chinese market, which is going to be worth as much, if not more than the US market going forwards.

As Kirk said in TSFS, "I swear to you, we're not finished yet."

 

$400 million worldwide? I hope so but I think it's unlikely. Probably $350 million

 

I'm more surprised if there were many people who liked it. There are so many exciting and interesting teaser trailers being released these days. The form and quality has really progressed in recent years, at least for certain studios. You can build up a ton of interest with a good trailer or kill any momentum with a confusing or forgettable one. STB fell in the latter. There was only moderate to low buzz generated by the early teaser trailer . . . . and a lot of that was negative (not what studios are gunning for). A total fumble for the Paramount marketing department. If any franchise could use a solid boost to get things rolling it's a niche franchise like Star Trek.

 

Just split the difference and go with $375m.

 

A realistic number, but, who knows?
