Just been watching the trailer for Arrival, a science fiction offering from Sicario director Denis Villeneuve.

It stars Amy Adams and appears to focus on her efforts to translate the language of aliens newly arrived on Earth.
Now the book on which the movie is based is pretty cerebral and based largely on the 'A' story of trying to translate the alien language and communicate.
The trailer suggests there has been a 'Hollywood' element added, emphasising the military response that will apparently provide the ticking clock here.

Still, it's an interestingly different take on the alien invasion concept, especially in the same year as Independence Day 2, putting in elements of Stargate and Close Encounters. I'm looking forward to this one.

This looks good. It looks like it could be a more intelligent first contact story, rather than just us vs them.

It's based on Ted Chiang's novella " Story of Your Life". The script was written by Eric Heisserer, who wrote the atrocious Nightmare on Elm Street and The Thing remakes, but seemed to have some success with Lights Out.

I'm sure I will see this opening weekend, I'm hopeful this turns out to be a thought provoking film. I read on Wikipedia (not the most reliable source I know) that the budget for this film was only 50 million, It will be interesting to see how this film does. I'm hoping for something good, but seeing who the scriptwriter is there is a part of me that's expecting it to be a disappointment.

I'm more hopeful given Denis Villeneuve is an exceptional director, even when working with lesser material. It would be nice for this to be the "two" in a 2016 one-two of low-budget, thoughtful SF films to help redeem the year.

The "one" being Midnight Special which still runs around my tiny little mind.

Plus, if he pulls this one off, we have hopes that his Blade Runner sequel may not be the unmitigated disaster many purists expect it to be

Hugo - Sometimes we are asked to do things that are beyond us

Wait......I thought Ridley was doing the sequel? Hmmm, well....I guess we shall see if it turns out good. As for the film you mentioned....I'll have to check that one out.

The trailer really got my attention. I'll see if we have time by then, for both my girlfriend and I november is a busy time.

I saw the trailer yesterday when I saw Hell or High Water. Nice looking trailer. I like Amy Adams and I really would love another movie in the same vain as Intersteller, Gravity, or The Martian that we've been seeing the last few years. I'm looking forward to it.

There's a (presumably metaphorical) ticking clock? The military certainly don't understand the aliens then. They need to brush up on the calculus of variations. From what I've read about the adaptation, the philosophical underpinnings of the story have been retained.

One of the rare science fiction films this year and so far the only rival to Beyond for best science fiction movie of 2016(in a quiet year).

Both trailers in one clip here:

From what little we see, the aliens appear to have heptagonal symmetry and the same basic body plan as in the short story. Not sure why one alien is splaying its mouth/anus against the screen though.

Ridley Scott is involved as a producer, but it's being directed by Villeneuve.

It certainly has been a thin year so far, but I found Midnight Special to be an infinitely more interesting SF film than Beyond on a 10th of the budget. I appreciate it was underwatched and it wasn't as appreciated as I would like, still it was more of the kind of SF film I enjoy over Beyond.

Regardless, the reviews for Arrival have been supreme, so I am thoroughly looking forward to this, especially with Villeneuve at the helm.

Hugo - The only thing I ever believed in was Alton. And I failed him.
