Was Troy a psychotherapist too?

Maybe we have totally misunderstood Troi's role as "Counselor" all these years.

Maybe... she's really the ship's LAWYER.

It's an interesting view. A psychologist must keep a distance from his/her patients. But it seems to me she was a little too much involved with her fellow crew members. And it was inevitable, really. I mean, there was only a bar in the Enterprise. Where had she to spend her free time?!?

Edit: And how the heck she had free time?

Well actually she did for the most part. A psychologist usually would try to be a lot more professional in general layman's terms. As for her getting involved with her fellow crewmembers, the only two she really became romatically involved with were Riker and Worf (riker more so due to the obvious previous romantic history between the two.)
As for where at what she did with her spare time wel, she did exercise in the ship's gym with Beverley Crusher or else probably relaxed in either his quarters or on the hollodeck.

I thought the most interesting function for Troi was as the Captain's Counselor in regard to diplomatic matters - counselling him on alien cultures' norms, language, etc. I wish that was depicted more during the series.

The problem with her character it that she was too many things. She is a bridge officer, she is the ship therapist, she is a diplomatic, in Darmok she is even a linguist. Really, I know that the writers didn't know what to do with her, but they overcompensated a little too much.

FORCED to live every Trekkie's dream, by having to live out the remainder of her existence in the 24th Century world of STAR TREK
While a interesting place to maybe visit, I wouldn't want to live there. If I was compelled to live there the rest of my life I would feel that I was being forced.
Hey, millionaires are smart!
Right! I believe that one of them should consider running for President of Un...
Oh. Never mind.
Much rather have the billionaire, than the millionaire.

So you can get an indigestion of beluga caviar? You know there is really such a thing as too much money.

Looked it up.

She a Psychic Therapist and a Sick Otter Rapist, but not a Psychotherapist.

(Besides all mental illness, almost all mental illness was cured or deemed curable in TOS, so this thread is redundant.)
