As much as I like the The Original Series, some of the nuisances of writing characters didn't until The Next Generation, in my opinion.

I'll give you the best example I can give: in every Star Trek TV series ending (even including the one for Enterprise,) there was dramatic ending to it. With Turnabout Intruder, there were no threads throughout the show that ended there. With TNG, we had the poker playing, Data getting an emotion chip, "All Good Things" was a dramatic way to end the series along with Deep Space Nine's "What You Leave Behind" and Voyager's "Endgame." I'm guessing that they didn't have that kind of stuff written back then in the 1960's. Spock did accept some things about his Human-Vulcan condition and at least attempted Kohlinar (spell check.)

    What are your rankings?

    I have: Deep Space Nine
    The Next Generation
Enterprise (the writing was better in Seasons 3-4)
    Voyager
    The Original Series

I've gotta go with DS9, which made impressive use of its large cast of recurring characters.

The Next Generation. DS9 would be 2nd due to so many recurring characters. Voyager 3rd.

DS9 edges it for it's supporting cast. The advantages of a fixed location.

Definitely a difficult choice between TOS and DS9, but I've gotta go with the latter thanks to its impressive secondary cast. TNG is a solid third, only really let down only by Wesley and Pulaski.

All of the main DS9 characters had fleshed out arcs (even Dax if you include the transition to Ezri). Jake even developed over the seasons despite a lack of screentime. Then you have many of the recurring characters getting a lot of development too. It has to be DS9.

DS9 and the actors I have on my mind are, first of all, Marc Alaimo, Andrew Robinson and Jeffrey Combs.

DS9 due to its strong cast of main and supporting characters.

Either TOS for the strong three leads or TNG for it's larger ensemble.

Easily Deep Space Nine for me, too, for the same reasons that have already been mentioned.

I still need to really watch DS9, which seems to be such a fan favorite online (don't worry, I'm getting there). But I have to say TOS is my personal favorite. I love that crew -- they just work so perfectly together. You get that through the series, but you see it really exemplified in movies like Search for Spock, Voyage Home, and Undiscovered Country. After I watched TOS, TAS, and the first six movies earlier this year, I had a hard time getting into TNG, because I just missed the 1701 crew so much. Now that I'm in late season 4 of TNG, that's worn off and I'm fully invested in that, but still....Kirk/Spock/McCoy/Uhura/Sulu/Chekov/Scotty, doesn't get better.

Followed closely by VOY. After that, the ranking is about equal amongst them, really. But I'm glad ALL of it is out there and available. And even when I've felt let down by this franchise, on occasion, it was always clear that their intention was to give us the Vulcan Salute and NOT the Middle Finger. So many who loved the earlier series, when they were nobody, got to work on the later series as technicians, craftsman ... even actors. And that care, that Love ... it's there, you can see it. The people who make these shows really give a shit and so ... you can't go wrong, no matter which way you choose it. But for me ... it'll always be TNG.

    1) DS9
Especially for all the recurring characters, but the main characters were good too.
    2) TOS
The Kirk-Spock-McCoy trinity stand out so much it doesn't matter that the others are rather underdeveloped.
    3) ENT
The characters feel more human and relatable due to the show being set closer to our time.
    4) VOY
A rather bland ensemble, but Seven and the Doctor stands out.
    5) TNG
A bunch of boring stoic stiffs, Worf and to a lesser extent Data being the exceptions.

Sir.................you've been listening to idle Trekkie gossip! Watch TNG and VOY for your own self and decide. THEN, compare your critiques. I'm confident that you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Goes to show how little you know about me. I've been a Trek fan since I saw TOS as a kid in the 70s. And then I saw most of TNG and all of VOY when they were on air. Caught up with DS9 on DVD. I have all Trek (series and movies) on DVD and/or Blu-ray and have seen most episodes multiple times (in fact I'm currently doing a rewatch of VOY). So please don't lecture me about not knowing my Trek!

    Very well ...

And your First Hand experience with viewing STAR TREK is most impressive. I'm always finding out something new about STAR TREK, thanks to this site, or when I'm looking up STAR TREK images, especially, I find out about all sorts of stuff, like how Shatner's rug didn't float off the top of his head, going underwater in STAR TREK 4. Or about how the Enterprise-D model was hanging over a grill at some STAR TREK: The Experience venue for a long time and ended up with a coat of grease and other minor damage. THEN, was returned anonymously and nobody knew what the hell it was, or was for. It's like rediscovering the franchise .... all over again!
