History channel celebrates Star Trek's 50th Anniversary

Awesome, just set the DVR. I used to watch the History Channel all the time but it got to be nothing but reality shows and Ancient Aliens, so I haven't watched in a few years. Hope it's better than the Beatles documentary they did, it was sort of a watered down version of better documentaries and had nothing new to offer. Also set the DVR for 6am that morning for something called "Star Trek: Secrets Of The Universe", though from the description it appears to be something made as a tie-in with Into Darkness, but I've never seen it. I wonder if this year they'll rerun some of that other Trek stuff they used to air a lot like "How William Shatner Changed The World"? If they can find an open space between Pawn Stars and American Pickers reruns to work it in.

I know. Back around the 1990s, The History Channel was an endless display of solid documentaries. You couldn't turn it on without getting drawn in and hooked.

Then they moved their good material to a higher-priced tier of basic cable (Military History), and their flagship channel now shows non-history pablum that's created to numb the minds of simple people. Some of these shows are so uninformative, it's like they're dangling a cat toy for humans.

So yeah, I set my DVR for this Star Trek program, but I doubt it will be very good.

Why do you think it won't be good?

The good news (probably) is that it's not a History Channel production, so we're not going to have Giorgio A. Tsoukalos or Chumlee opining on Star Trek. It was made by a company called New Wave Entertainment and History Channel are just airing it. While it seems the bulk of their stuff has been stand-up comedy specials it looks like they do a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff for DVD/Blu Ray special features, retrospective stuff and those HBO First Look things about upcoming films.

Set to record. But I haven't seen a good Star Trek special on History Channel yet.

This is available in the U.S., but will it be available in Canada on it's History television channel?

Commercials show Nichols repeating the first interracial kiss non-sense.

It wasn't even the first interracial kiss on Star Trek, if one looks at the episodes in production order.

I guess there was nothing surprising about a white kissing an Asian on Trek.

As the years go on, facts pale in comparison to the legend. Did you know that Martin Luther King Jr. personally stopped by Nichelle's house and begged on his knees for her to keep being on Star Trek? True!

I'm sure they'll also repeat the:
"Gene wanted an interracial/multiethnic crew..." <--- When in fact that was a memoed request from NBC execs for ALL it's TV shows as advertisers saw that TV were now more common and more were watching.

and

"The NBC execs didn't want a woman as second in Command..." <--- When it's now well known they were fine with a female second in Command, AS LONG AS it wasn't the executive producer's current Mistress/Girlfriend (and REMEMBER folks, GR was married to someone else BESIDES Majel Barret at the time (GR divorced that person in 1969 after the end of the TV series run). This also means that GR (if Nichelle Nichols is to be believed); was having sexual liaisons with Nichelle while still seeing Majel, and while still married to his current wife.

Yep - GR's vision during Star Trek's run seemed to be: $$$ and (.)(.) - but of course the latter was dropped for TNG as by that time GR was much older and could get any young actress to his casting couch any longer in exchange for a line on the show.

Does this moment from season one's "What Are Little Girls Made Of?" count?

Did anybody notice when they were talking about the end of TNG and they showed the final scene from All Good Things the subtitle said "Yesterday's Enterprise, 1990"?
