News coming 8/10?

So is the captain of the ship the Lt. Commander or is the story told from the POV of the Lt. Commander?
The show's lead is a Lt. Commander, but she isn't the Captain. Fuller emphasizes this further stating there's already been five shows where the Captain (or commanding officer, in the case of DS9's first 3 seasons) was the lead, this one won't.

Thirteen episodes to a TOS throwaway line...

Maybe Romulan spies mentioned in "Balance of Terror"? It would be timely with fears about cultures being subtly invaded.

If there was even a slim chance that I'd pay for a new streaming service to watch one show, it just went to ZERO with the news that there will be commercials. I'll be viewing through alternate means with whatever associated delays those entail.

It's not another universe according to Fuller. He's referencing something in TOS history that he isn't telling us about yet. Yeah, it's probably his own version of it, but he's already said they'll be using the iconic uniforms and ship interiors of TOS. Though I believe his exact wording was "playing with".

He literally said they're establishing their own Star Trek Universe and re-imagining Star Trek elements. Why isn't everyone freaking out?

Even if he hadn't said that, it's clear it will look nothing like that already established era. Of course it won't, and that's why you should stay away from the mid-to-late 2200s.

"I just climbed on stage with Bryan. When I asked he could describe the lead's rank, he said "lieutanant commander." As I was typing this just now, Bryan climbed into the audience, put his hand on my shoulder and whispered "she will have many ranks."'

Hmmmm, meaning what?

She will rise in rank. Maybe even take over command when the Captain is killed/promoted off the ship. That would be kinda neat to see. Maybe she'll be a Shelby-like character?

I'm loving this, especially the female lead that's not a captain. That's literally been my "if I were tapped to do a Trek series" idea for years. Start with a lower ranking officer that still has bridge duty so we can see them work their way up the ranks and learn from the officers above them.

Because my freak out has all been worn out on Enterprise and JJTrek. I'm just in ignore mode at this point.

Because it is a TV show.

No.

I'm very curious as to what he is referring to when he says that we've heard mention of this event or incident that is the basis of the series before. Especially since that era is not well traveled in canon form.
My money is on the Axanar Peace Mission, which took place sometime when Kirk was a cadet in 2252-2256, so it's in the right timeframe (ten years before TOS). Plus it has some dramatic stakes like "holding the Federation together" and allowing "Kirk and Spock to serve together as brothers".

Fair enough. Enterprise was too early in my Trek fanhood and knowledge to freak out and I've never liked Trek movies anyway even though I find the new ones irritating. But I've wanted a new TV show for a long time and was okay with everything until reading Fuller's comments today which almost all seemed worst case scenario.

He said it takes place in the Prime Timeline last month (?) he probably doesn't literally mean a new universe. He probably means it like new characters aliens and such. They've carving out their own piece of the franchise.

While I am disappointed with the timeline, my one hope is with the line "We’re producing the show in 2016. We have to update the style of the effects, the style of the sets, the style of the makeup.” That I hope means we are not stuck with something that looks like it was designed and filmed in the 1960's

Well, he said he's creating his own Star Trek universe and will re-imagine things. So I guess technically it's not running roughshod since it's another universe like the new movies.
You're taking things too literal. He just means he's trying to reimagine it, it's still the Prime universe, just modified a little for a 2017 TV series.

It will also look modern. This show will pay lip service to the Prime timeline, but will be its own thing.

Yes but it also doesn't make sense to have it look so different, which is one reason why I hate that the show will be set in that period.

If he really means that he needs to be a hell of a lot more careful with the words he chooses. It still sounds like it won't be anything like Star Trek unless he's just not good at this kind of press thing which I don't believe.
