CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

We did get a chance to sit down with Gary Graham while at STLV. Axa was not mentioned. Graham has a new venture, anyway. // Thank you for your kind support.
That was pretty funny!

By chance, did he mention Axanar off-mic at all?

How STLV put a lid on fan film discussion:

This, during a large event, from the moderator:

“We’re gonna pass on that question because there’s a lot of controversy and discussion regarding it and a lot of confusion,” Adam said, “and we’re not really in a position to have an appropriate discussion about it in this forum. So if you wouldn’t mind, we’re going to pass on that question. Thank you. Not that we have an opinion in either direction ’cause we don’t. But this isn’t the right forum for it. So forgive us for that.”

and this, from a star on the autograph floor:

One of the celebrities, who asked to remain anonymous (for reasons that will become apparent in a moment) shared with me that they would very much have liked to talk to me about fan films because of all the great work that was being done on them. But they couldn’t because Creation had put a gag order on the topic of fan films.

“A gag order?” I asked.

“If anyone brings up a fan film or fan films in general to us,” they said, “we’re supposed to change the subject or simply say that we’re not comfortable discussing fan films because some are controversial right now.”

“And Creation told you this personally?” I followed up.

“Someone at Creation told my agent, and they relayed it to me,” this actor said. “And they said that they’d have people walking around the convention listening to make sure we were all following this rule…and that the people would be dressed as fans, not just as volunteers, so we’d never know who was listening.”

TYGP. Thank You Greedy Peters.

Wow! Really? Just Wow.

But before anyone starts screaming about First Amendment rights and all ... does NOT apply to a private venue (i.e., not a government agency) asking people to avoid certain topics. For all we know, there could have been a laundry list of forbidden topics, such as religion and politics, and Star Wars and BSG, etc.

Its a lot more like Grandma saying this is Thanksgiving, you will shut up about your loan to your brother for tonight, and I mean it.

It probably will generate more discussion outside the events. Will be interesting to see if any consensus emerges. I doubt it tho since everyone has their own facts.

Lord, this is the sort of thing that will get the Reason guys worked up.

Anyhow, from reading the linked report, this sounds like a directive coming from Creation but not necessarily C/P. Perhaps Creation simply didn't want a repeat of the panel hijacking from Comic-Con. That would be the simplest explanation.

Walter Koenig talked a bit about Renegades on his panel (he was asked by the host), though he did specifically say they removed all trek references from the production.

I'm glad STLV made it a point not to talk about the Axanar subject. The less exposure AP gets the better.

It must have stung a bit to have his victory march into Rome thwarted. Being a hero of the original Empire, and all. At least he got the traditional public facilities graffiti part. http://mentalfloss.com/article/32276/11-colorful-phrases-ancient-roman-graffiti

With luck it will be online!

It is just so mind numbingly amazing that AP didn't take the opportunity presented to say "yes, a thousand times yes, we are totally on board with Abrams and Lin and welcome them on our set when we have retooled to be in good relations with the studio". Bring in the best amateur talent knowing they have the endorsement of the directors. Get the fans behind it. Get the suit settled on less than scorched earth terms and on the QT. The opportunity of a lifetime, pissed on. No other way to describe it.

STLV is an officially sanctioned event, no?

I'm not surprised that they didn't want any discussion of the lawsuit, lest they lose that sanction. You don't bite the hand that feeds you, a point that AP & Co-conspirators seemed to miss.

If they hadn't blown all of their money, they could have pulled a Renegades and tweaked just enough to get through unscathed.....

The stupid runs strong with this one...

Oh, I can think of one other way to describe it: securities fraud. That's basically what we're looking at. This is about a guy who saw a way to raise capital for a new business venture without having to go through any of the normal legal channels. ST fandom and crowd-funding gave him the means to do it. My guess is that he thought he could get the film out and sell the studio to private investors before C/P got wise to what he was doing. Then the decision to make Discovery prompted CBS to take this seriously. The only reason LFIM hasn't settled/surrendered is that he doesn't want to face the donors.

If he loses the case in court, he can say with all honesty, "I'm sorry. They wouldn't let me make the movie." And he won't owe them a thing.

Some of you have already commented on the so-called 'gag order' imposed at STLV, as reported by Axanar supporter Jonathan Lane at FanFilmFactor.com. Here's a roundup of the incident, plus news of what further occurred on Sunday, and whether this really means anything to fan productions not being sued by CBS/Paramount.

Koenig during his panel talked about Renegades, hotw the film allowed him to develop Chekov, and how the guidelines effected changes to the film.
