Spoilers Dark Matter - Season 2

I wonder if they borrowed some of the green goo from the Killjoys set?

Not a bad take on the whole predictive ability thing though by the end it played out fairly predictably (ironic?).

Has anyone on this show had a loved one who was still alive at the end of their debut episode? One's wife was dead before the show started. Two has no family, just an evil creator. Three's love interest and his surrogate father both died in their debut episodes. Four killed his own mentor in the latter's first episode. I think we learned about the murder of Four's father in the same episode where he was introduced in flashback. Four's evil mother and spineless brother are still alive, but I wouldn't count them as his loved ones. Five's friend was dead before the show started. Six has had no family or loved ones introduced, just colleagues who turned out to betray him. Now Nyx's brother dies in the same episode where we meet him. I hope that, if Devon has any family, he stays far away from them.

Four has an ex-girlfriend, but she came to take him for execution in the second episode of S2. Still, sooner or later somebody is going to turn to his side and she is a candidate.

The seers vaguely remind me of the Borg; assimilating people into the collective and that "resistance is futile" vibe.

Two is glitchy. She will need to visit Dwarf Star Technologies (she knows where the HQ is) pretty soon, to get a cure.

Milo's suicide is a possible point of contention between Four and Nyx - Nyx doesn't know yet that Four talked him into it.

Speaking about that, after this episode I suspect we can take Milo as the voice of the writers when he says there will be another betrayal. So, who will it be?
Android (shifting loyalties involving the group of humanlike androids), Four (if he can get somewhere in Zairon), Five (vague past), Nyx, Devon,...?

Oh, yeah, that's right, Knives Chau from Scott Pilgrim! (Ellen Wong, that is.) How could I have forgotten her?

I'm hoping for Devon, if it means they dump him from the crew. I'm finding him almost as boring as One was, although the actor is a bit less bland.

I don't think Four talked Milo into suicide, he just told him that there was another solution in addition to the ones that Milo had considered. But Nyx might still hold him responsible for her brother's death if she knew.

But the knife Milo used to kill himself was the same knife that Four had pointedly left behind in Milo's room, allegedly for cutting an apple with, in an earlier scene. Even in that scene, with Four calling such attention to the knife, I was wondering if he was planning to kill Milo or encourage him to kill himself.

Wonder if it was just co-incidence or whether the episode writer was aware of the Blake's 7 episode Shadow which also had as a plot element a drug of the same name (it's users were called dreamheads indicating it was also a hallucinogen).

Okay, I just shotgunned all 6 episodes of DM today.

Liking the season so far, and looking forward to seeing where it ends up.

I'll agree with some other comments in this thread though:

-Dr Devon isn't really much of an interesting character so far, they need to do something interesting with him

-good grief, Three's past is just best left forgotten, poor guy will never catch a break

-I was really surprised at how "easily" they disposed of Corso, I would've thought there'd be more interest in revenge after the end of the first ep

-I liked the Three vs One arguments last season, and now it seems like Six has taken over as the new focus for Three's distrust. A very simple straightforward switch from the showrunners?

-I could see One being completely gone for good, but I could also see him coming back. I mean for one thing, we've got this key that can access pockets of space-time or something? (Not to mention the fact that he knew he should be watching his back after that one witness was killed in a bar, so it's entirely possible he somehow staged his death.)

-We never saw the android give the toothbrush as a present.

-All models seem to indicate an all-out corporate war is coming? That's promising, but I'm sorry to say that I could tell you very little about the different corps. (Maybe "they're all bad" is all you need to know?)

I was going to say that Killjoys has more violence or fighting than DM, but I'm not sure that's true.
I feel that overall KJ has seemed more violent (though I'm also not sure if it's true), but that made certain acts of violence on DM really stand out. Most specifically, as I watched all 6 eps today, I was really shocked by Five's "kill them all" command, and by the rather gruesome throat-slash at the end of the most recent episode.

I think Nyx knew everything that happened at the end, right? She knew Milo was dead, and she knew of Four's role in ending/saving her brother.

At least that's how I took it.

Dark Matter is back! How many strange new malls and warehouses can they visit this season? :D
And quarries! And wintery forests!
The android had some fun shopping at a mall, but the winner in episodes 4 and 5 was definitely wintery forests.

Save the four-wheeler driving through quarries for Killjoys.

There should be some sort of drinking game.

Though to be fair, the production values have clearly improved, and my eyeballs are appreciative of that.

Didn't think that much of it at the time but it did seem a bit out of place from what we've seen of 5 so far - wonder if was a response to the situation, something that had always been there or whether life aboard the Reza has changed her her too.

There is a lot on this show that reminds me of Blake 7, A crew that does not know each other, learning about each other, and the ship they are on. Members of the crew with a criminal past. Fighting a corrupt Galactic entity, Galactic Authority & Corporations/Federation) An AI entity who can control the ship (Zen\Orac) and is part of the crew. Changes in the main cast season to season (One out, Nyx and the Doc join). Not the same as Blake's Seven, but it does have the feel to it formatted for a 21st century audience.

Violence seems to be presented a bit less casual on DM (allthough a lot of nameless grunts were killed in a couple of episodes of S1), but acts like "kill them all" or shooting Corso point blank do stand out as a result. The violence is really felt by the viewers, IMO. Another scene that stood out to me in this regard is when Two kills the goons of the casino in an early S1 episode; it was sudden and violent, and then the reaction from Five helped to sell it.

As for the Corps, they are interchangeable except that Ferrous seem to have it in for the Raza now (after the betrayal in the pilot) and Mikkei may still be an ally of convenience. Also noteworthy: Dwarf Star Technologies created Two, that will surely be revisited this season.

As for the toothbrush, it was in a - sadly - deleted scene, that Mallozzi shared on his blog: https://josephmallozzi.files.wordpress.com/2016/07/screen-shot-2016-07-25-at-7-26-48-pm.jpg

It's unclear what Nyx knows, she had reason to cry anyway.

The special effects have improved this year, the planetary landing of the Raza was quite impressive. The improvements in CGI (lesser costs for similar results) make shows like this possible.

I did a full series re-watch a couple years ago, still love the show.
Wasn't there supposed to be a remake or reboot of Blake's 7, a few years ago? Did nothing come from that?

DM does resemble Blake's 7, and also takes cues from Firefly and Farscape. And the Stargate DNA is there on the production side, something which I think is visible in the similar style of humour (three channeling O'Neill at times).

Hmmmm, interesting. Because some of the shots in the most recent episode reminded me of the Destiny. Probably it's the windows. Very similar in layout.

Given that both shows share showrunners, I'm sure that they liked Destiny's gritty dark look and told DM's set designer to start there - or that they approved the sketches they saw that reminded them of it.

That said, while the Raza's bridge design is nice, and the overhead windows (especially visible in this episode) really add to it, it's like the crew have no real reason to use it as intended. I'm fairly sure no one has even sat down in the two outermost stations, and even in the middle of battle (which finally happened in earnest this week), they pretty much left everything to the Android. I find it funny that for all the bridge offers in terms of neat angles and places to shoot, most of the time everyone is simply standing around the back talking with each other and using the one screen for expositional purposes. :P

I have the impression that the two shows actually had the same production designer, but I'm not sure.
