Rio 2016 Olympics - countdown and discussion

I'm going to watch some streaming, and I got Sling so I can watch some on NBC since I cut the cord awhile back.

I always look forward to the Summer Olympic Games; they're the only sporting events that I care to watch or keep track of, especially the swimming and gymnastics competitions. Rio is certainly an interesting venue, a beautiful city with its share of problems. It's gotten a lot of negative publicity lately because of the Zika epidemic, security issues, and the water quality at one of the venues. So what? Beijing and many other previous host cities weren't perfect either. Doping. Bribery. Favoritism. Let the games begin!

I wish NBC's coverage were more inclusive and encompassing and not American-centric. It would be nice to see an award ceremony featuring a foreign country and its national anthem playing in the background. I could sing or hum along to Advance Australia Fair or La Marseillaise.

We Were Promised The Greenest Olympics Ever. We Got An Ecological Disaster

Rio 2016: Riot police use tear gas and rubber bullets to clear Olympic protests

Footage appears to show a woman being hit by a projectile, fired by a policeman. She suddenly falls to the ground after a heavily-armed officer lifts his weapon. She was helping a young man who himself appears to have been shot and limped away clutching his leg.

Hundreds of protesters chanted angrily at the £9 billion cost of hosting the international event, as the torch moved through the city. Police said anti-government protesters in Duque de Caixas, on Rio's north side, threw rocks and blocked the torch's path, and were dispersed with rubber bullets and pepper spray.

Three people were injured by rubber bullets, including a 10-year-old girl, local media reported.

Controversy over the Olympics has made the torch a symbol of social discontent in the country as education and health remain underfunded and many government employees say they are still waiting for their wages to be paid.

What a horrific shitstorm brewing in Rio. It will be a miracle if a tragedy of some sort doesn't take place.

Do you have the NBC Sports Network (NBCSN) on cable or satellite? They're playing other nation's events and some of the sports that get less attention like table tennis, badminton, fencing, archery, judo, equestrian, and so forth.

Not sure if it would be geoblocked for American viewers, but you could try cbc.ca (Canada's national broadcaster's website). They'll be streaming some events, and they don't only cover Canadian teams. They try to cover events as close to real-time as possible, so it's not all just a summary of one country's events in the evening.

I think they're streaming the Opening Ceremony, starting at 6:30 Eastern (4:30 in my time zone).

Was impressed with the opening ceremony. Watched part of it live this morning, and other part delayed which I was watching just before. Also, as I was watching, I decided on downloading the app from the Australian broadcaster.

Russian swimmers are allowed to participate. What a crying shame.
Meanwhile Chinese swim star Sun Yang is trying to distract his opponents by being rude to them inside the training pool.
Fairness is not to be expected by some people when it comes to winning. Sigh!

I enjoy the Olympics however NBC (Nothing But Commercials) turned the Opening Ceremony into a butchered mess with constant ads every five minutes and embarrassing banal commentary. :ack:

I decided to go to bed instead of watching it.
Today the first swimming competitions turned out to be a disaster for the Germans: Heidtmann disqualified in his 400 IM heat (his time was national record and was enough to get into the final). Florian Vogel 9th place over 400 free with the second fastest time in his life..... Several others failed to enter the next rounds....
Adam Peaty World Record 100 breaststroke 57,55.
Russian swimmer Efimova allowed to participate despite her doping past.....
A German gymnast competing with serious injury...... :sigh:

I found the Opening Ceremonies rather boring, actually. They were colorful, but nothing I'd write home about.

I watched about an hour and half switching in between commercials to Heroes & Icons showing Star Trek episodes eventually staying with ST because it was much more entertaining with less interruptions. I'll have to turn on the t.v. seeing what's going down with today's events.

Two gold medals to Australia. Saw the Australian girls win the 4x100m freestyle as i got home. Also saw highlights of another gold that we won. And Australia is on top of the medal tally at the moment.
