Matt Damon Goes Asian

Old guys don't jump around on treetops either but they do so sometimes in movies. In the old kung fu movies the old guys with long white hair were usually the biggest badasses of them all.
Doubly so when they're old and blind. They're like pure chi force.

I barely have skin in this game.

Sex sells crap.

Old men are kinda gross.

Sexually.

But they're really good at paying for stuff.

So mostly you don't want to #### them, unless they are paying for stuff.

The older they are, the more they have to buy stuff.

It's a trade off.

Not only is Matt Damon not buying me stuff, but I am expected to pay money to look at his tired old ass broke down body, and not cringe.

Meh?

If people want the "white male lead" problem to go away, all they have to do is stop going to see movies with white male leads.
And I've been doing that. I love Ridley Scott but I refuse to watch Exodus: Gods and Kings in any form.

I'm glad to see there are other people who are having issues with this movie. I have a friend on Facebook who is very excited about it but I couldn't seem to connect with him why I had such a big problem with this.

Made by two Chinese production companies and directed by a Chinese person - clearly all self-hating racists.

More seriously I was discussing this over steamed buns with some Chinese friends this morning - they see it as following what they call 'rule one' = where's the money?
Makes sense. Matt D. is a big box office draw, and if there were a Chinese actor that could match his value - he would be the next Jason Bourne.

Of course it's worthwhile discussing why white male actors of a certain age provide a much higher ROI than their peers who are minorities and/or women.

How did Matt Damon get into China? I thought the Great Wall was built to keep foreigners out. *snicker*

While I suppose Matt Damon has got to make a living for himself, I definitely do not like the casting choice, however necessary it might be to get mainstream audiences to pay attention.

As Constance Wu puts it,

"If nothing else, you'd get some mad respect (which is WAY more valuable than money)," she wrote.
aw, that's so cute....

I read somewhere that the producers of Doctor Strange changed the Ancient One from being Tibetan to being Celtic partly to avoid an oudated stereotype but also to avoid offending Chinese censors and audiences. I'm not sure how to feel about that.

American studios are still learning how to navigate the rocks and shoals of the Chinese market, and along the way there will be some decisions made that seem rather odd.

Let's be honest though, this is what would happen if they didn't cast someone like Damon:

Yep. Or this year's The Mermaid, the highest-grossing Chinese movie ever, which made $527m there and $3m here.

There's legitimate complaints about unnecessary casting of white actors in roles (of which Aloha and Pan are perfect examples), and then there's inane Twitter whining. This is a Chinese-financed, Chinese-made movie aiming for a big US audience, so they cast a US actor. In other words: inane Twitter whining.

I'll pass on this one, at least in the theater. While the historical angle is interesting, it looks like a carbon copy of every other fantasy epic out there.

Come on - dragons, soldiers, magic, mist, AND the Great Wall? That's transformative man, trans... for... ma...tive!

Just search John Wayne Conqueror at YouTube.

I also heard about some black guy portraying Alexander Hamilton...
