Mongols ride horses. Cowboys ride horses. John Wayne plays cowboys . So John Wayne can play a Mongol. Perfectly logical.I just found The Counquerer on Wikipedia and watched the trailer on Youtube. What the hell were they thinking?
Proof that even the Duke could make a stinker film.In 1956. The movie was called The Conqueror.

Oh, it's hardly the only one. I think he'd made nearly 200 films before Stagecoach (1939). He was in MANY B and C movies that were made within a week or two before John Ford made him a star.Proof that even the Duke could make a stinker film.
While I love the movie and easily ignore it owing to context, Obi-Wan Kenobi as Prince Faisal of the Hejaz in Lawrence of Arabia comes close (conceptually).
I don't think that's even remotely trueIt's sad that movies aren't looked at as good or bad anymore based on their own merits, but on all of the behind the scenes casting/directing/writing decisions that go into the movie well before it's even been made.
Where every casting decision is made to anger as many people as possible anymore.
I think this sadly is just due to the fact that if you really want to get mainstream audiences to pay attention to a movie like this you need a white guy in the lead role. It is definitely annoying though, and it would have been nice to see an Asian actor like Donnie Yen or Jet Li in the lead.
