Star Trek Discovery

This. Representation matters, and those constantly represented everywhere don't get to say it doesn't.

It's remarkable how much 'color blind, gender blind, pure meritocracy' casting ends up with a cast full of straight white dudes. Because the producers are already envisaging a character before they cast them (naturally) and it is at that stage that the bias appears. The deliberate intent to create a diverse cast is needed early on to combat this.
Agreed. Just stay away from the cliches, tropes and 'token race' characters (travis, malcom, chakotay).
That's because there isn't.

Problem is, too many Trek fans only see things within the context of the franchise itself. The lower hull of the new ship is a wing rather than a cylinder. There are lots of wings and triangles used in all kinds of vehicles outside of Star Trek, but within it fans associate triangles and non-rectangular trapezoids mainly with alien spacecraft.

It's really quite silly.

I see a little klingon influence with the slightly trianglular shape.

The filmography for Michelle Yeoh indicates that she was in Tomorrow Never Dies; she played a Chinese spy who was working with James Bond.

As for age, it is plausible for a captain to be that old.

She wasn't up to her ears in lines in that film. She was 9ne of the good things 8n it though.

Yeah, I saw that movie in the theater.

One of her most famous roles is in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, something else I saw in the theater.

So... and...? Your point?

Wow, this thread expanded quickly.
The ship in the video looks ghastly, and the timeline is rather confusing (a sequel to the prequel?), but it's nice that we now have a Discovery to follow up to Voyager.

I wonder what will come next - Star Trek Mondeo?

Captains... I love the idea of Bassett. Seems like a good chance it will be her. Is Watanabe a martial arts guy? Having a kick-ass Karate or Kung Fu type captain would be awesome! Hahaha. I reckon Yeoh would fit the bill there. I also love Chow Yun Fat. Fillion would be great too except I don't know if it would be weird that he was a captain on another sci-fi property.

My point was that Yeoh could do a show that uses English, such as Star Trek.

And an action heroine who is now older would be plausible as a commanding officer.
She has an excellent screen presence, and she is still capable of doing some excellent stunt work.

There are a few comicon interviews that were transcribed but I think the videos got buried on the news pages. Here is one from Trekmovie.

In terms of star trek "messages"..Star Trek does not have to bash you over the head with them. We've gotten some of our best episodes with them, but also some of the worst. We'll need a balance.

Like something along the lines of Beyond, Star Trek can still give us positive visions by simply showing us different people working together effectively and inclusively.

That godawful Riker nailing the alien-of-the-week episode definitely falls into "worst." It could have been great but was just cast and executed so miserably. The DS9 episode with Dax and her Trill former lover was fantastic. Overall, I think DS9 was better at pushing boundaries than TNG

Is there an upper age for any rank? There's definitely a lower age of believability for higher ranks, but people can retire at any rank, so a 60+ year old is believable at any rank, really.

Us kiddies who grew up on TNG can fall into the trap of thinking a captain needs to be of a certain age, but there certainly isn't an upper limit to being a CO.
Betty White, for example, would slay as captain of a starship. :)
