Star Trek Discovery

Nitpicking....but you get my main point right?

Fans who have devoted a lot of time and energy to a franchise and who are therefore quite invested in said franchise tend to be overly enthusiastic, yes. Sometimes that's positive, sometimes that's negative. But it's a fact. To feign surprise that fans would react strongly is more troubling than the fans actually reacting strongly. It's a foregone conclusion that they would do so. To not understand that is to not understand the nature of fandom.

And nitpicking? Really? That's another thing that fans do quite well. I'm surprised you're not aware of that.

After watching the video again this morning, I LOVE the ship design. I mean, it looks awesome. So surprised about the hate. Most Federation ships look stupid and make no sense. This one at least looks cool. It is based on that old design I'd never heard of, but the finished product is gorgeous.

This reminds me of someone looking at the Fiat Multipla and saying it's a beautiful car. I genuinely don't know what to say or do, other than lose faith in the taste profile of much of humanity.

I wonder if Discovery could be a huge generational ship, one that was sent to another Galaxy as a sort of Noah's Ark to ensure that a portion of humanity survives? That's why it has an "industrial" look to it, it was built to survive for many years and maybe each season will have different crews as the originals die out and the children grow up and take over. Or maybe that's just a stupid idea, but one thing is for sure, it has to be something totally NEW. I don't see how any of the previous story lines can be made exciting again.

Not sure if that is it totally, but I do think it is rather large, judging by the windows and the wide nacelles with three caps each. This ship was designed to do something and take a bunch of people with it. It also appears to have some of the design aesthetic of USS Franklin, the sunken part of the saucer with I guess you could call it ribbing in the valley.

I wonder if this was a Warp 8 prototype, or a successor to the Kevin style designs. Or a radical alternative to the eventual Constitution-class USS Constellation (similar era in hull numbers).

I am trying to guess and justify the design with only visual appearances and no plot information. Wasn't there something about this being a 13 episode serial and the next serial would be a totally different ship and crew?

I saw the video on Facebook without looking were it was from. First thought, "oh someone decided to make and update that old 1970s concept design." Second thought, "Wouldn't it be interesting if CBS went for that one". Then I noticed it was from the Star Trek facebook page, and then the investigation as to just what was this happened.

So, from Trekmovie.com:

The Discovery’s Design

During the press conference, Fuller responded to a question from Access Hollywood’s Scott Mantz regarding how much influence an early conceptual design for Star Trek: The Motion Picture of the Enterprise had influenced the U.S.S. Discovery by stating “[it was] to a point where we legally can’t comment on it until we figure out some things.” When Trekmovie.com asked Kadin if the teaser for Star Trek: Discovery featured the final design of the ship, music, and logo, she laughed and said “NO! I was surprised Bryan didn’t say that, actually. I mean, we had three weeks to throw that together. We wanted to show fans…we’re super-excited by the score that this amazing composer, Phil Eisner, threw together as an audition and he did an incredible job. The concepts of the ship are totally what we’re going for and they’ll be honed up until, I think, the day we deliver.”

I went to look that car up. I'm not sure what I saw. I mean, the 2nd series actually looks decent, but the first series... who let Homer Simpson design an automobile?

I`m not sure about the design...there is stuff I like and stuff that might have to grow on me. I actually like the color and texturing for some reason. Not sure about the shape of the secondary hull. But this really seems to be a very quick and dirty "lets show them the direction we are going in"-render. And they call it a "test flight"..maybe that`s actually meant even more literal then we think? This might be to see the overall fan reaction...they might decide to heavily redesign or go for something else if the reaction is bad enought. It's CGI after all and easy to change.

I guess I should of said I'm still amused on what people get upset about over the internet..not surprised...Also I was just joking with the nitpicking thing...yes I get it that fans do that too....I'm just one of those fans who really doesn't let myself get so worked up about these things.

Instead you get worked up about what other fans are getting worked up about.
