Star Trek Discovery

Yeah, this CGI-Model needs HEAVY reworking!

I like the basic shape. But all the details are way too "bulky". The need tho smoothen up a lot of things. I really like that it has a "neck" though - starting with the Defiant/Enterprise-E/Voyager/ENT all Star Trek designs were awfully flat. I like that the ship has a three-dimensional conficuration again.

It's just the details of the model that are crap.

It's safe to say that since this cgi model is a test scene designed to be shown at SDCC that not a single second of it will be seen in the series itself. No live or SFX footage has been shot yet. The design will probably be tweaked somewhat, and the fact the trailer is not in 1080p anywhere might give you a clue that they didn't intend for it to be super high resolution.

You suggested that people grew to love the NX-01 as the series went on, which goes to show the design was fine and it took a while for them to get over the similarity to another ship. It was a superficial issue with the design.

The hate here is completely different. People hate the Discovery because it's hideous.

So it is, then, a superficial issue with the design.

That's a weird statement. All aspects of the design of a fictional spacecraft are by definition superficial. People are just reacting to the look of the thing. Some like it, others don't. Barely anyone is saying they won't watch the show because of that first rendering.

I think they'll struggle to find a camera angle that makes that ship look nice.

It's very First Contact/Voyager like in its design, dark grey, lots of paneling and pointless detail. I wish Federation ships would go back to the earlier days of cleaner lines. Even the Kelvin in my signature to the left is simple and elegant. The Discovery makes the Vengeance look like a Porsche

So we have a name and a ship...

USS Discovery NCC-1031

See Ship here [edit: see post below, cannot seem to embed].

It's...it's the Triangle Phase 2 USS Enterprise design!

I like the name. And interesting design choice. And the CGI model is clearly just a early test version.

Outside the fact that this is test footage, i have no problems with the design at all. It fits for the time period and keeps the timelines intact. Something will have to be retcond for the Franklin though, which i'm surprised had an error due to how much Pegg said he relied on Memory Alpha.

Seems to me people getting upset about nothing, must be a trek board on a day that ends in Y.

I'm still a fan of Star Trek, and other show/movies. But fandoms in general have been getting on my nerves more and more lately. Everybody's always whining and complaining and fighting amongst eachother. I'm part of a Alien/Predator forum, and I love Prometheus. You wouldn't believe how some people there treat fans of Prometheus. It's insane.

I like they're using this design and presume this is a test shot. I confess I'm not as much of a ship geek as some, breaking down hull sized, nacelle shapes etc.but it looks nice. My critical eye with Trek mainly falls on interiors (particularly bridges) and uniforms!

Plus the whole time placement - Fuller SEEMS to be hinting it's not what we presume, we know Excelsior-class vessels (wessels?) lasted over a hundred years.

DISCOVERY also tells of the premise as well as the ship name

Maybe Discovery is a generational ship. It could have spent decades travelling the galaxy picking up various members of alien races. This would allow a community to grow and make the show serialised. A sort of Deep Space Nine on a starship.

It's design doesn't fit the name somehow. "Discovery" sound like something daring, elegant, beautiful. This ship however is plain, simple, utilitarian. A workhorse. It looks like it's going to pant through space, not to slide elegantly through it. :/

I'm surprised about the amount of hate for the ship design. I think it looks pretty decent. What I don't like about it is the implication of the show being early in the timeline. I'm dumbfounded that a decent amount of posts seem to be wanting another show set early in the timeline. I want to see something new in the Trek future! I think that as some have said it won't really be set early. Something with time travel or re-using and old ship. It will be hard to get excited if there's nothing new to DISCOVER!!! It really irritates me that they won't release when it is set. If they announce it will be post-Nemesis is can breath a sigh of relief and relax and wait for the show.

When did we become so entitled?
Not entitled. The trailer promised us new crew, new villains new ship. And they want us to subscribe to and look at a 40 year rejected ship that barely resembles Federstion aesthetics.
If the powers that be can approve this design for the hero ship which is also a character in its own right, then I dread to think what else they will do. There are dozens of fan designs out there that walk all over this design. I cannot fathom why they couldn't come up with an original design for a ship. It hasn't jaded my enthusiasm for a new series especially with the team behind it. However it does make me question their choice of such a weird ugly and out of place ship.

I don't particularly want another prequel either. Enterprise was appalling. I'm optimistic they won't make the same mistake twice. Onwards and upwards. Not backwards.

I must say my feelings haven't shifted from ones of concern.

1. The ship is, largely, hideous. I actually didn't mind it from certain angles but that ventral shot made it look like a triangular mess. It seems clear to me that this show is set between ENT & TOS as I can see snippets of NX in the design [and also a drip of Galaxy]. Those rear impulse engines look ripped off the NX.

2. There seems to be quite a backlash to this. If social media is any gauge, most people seem to hate this ship. Say what you want about social media and opinions but that can't be what they wanted.

3. I like 'Star Trek Discovery'. 'Star Trek' in the title is the right thing to do [looking at you ENT] and 'Discovery' is a nice, exploration-type title that suits. It at least doesn't suggest violence/pew pew.

4. Apparently the show won't be episodic but will "be like a novel" which...I have mixed feelings about.

I do get your point, I don't agree 100%. Yes, people say it's ugly but that's based on a low quality render of a pre-production cgi model. Give this baby loads more detailing, better textures, better lighting, and it will look loads different. So, people are still hating because of a early glimps of the ship. As we move on, and see more, it might be different.
This is not about the details, it is about the basic shape. No amount of polishing will save this.

And as for it being hideous, that is all a point of view. It's based on a concept for the Enterprise for Phase2, and this design has been discused for decades now.
And that design was abandoned for a good reason.

After watching the video again this morning, I LOVE the ship design. I mean, it looks awesome. So surprised about the hate. Most Federation ships look stupid and make no sense. This one at least looks cool. It is based on that old design I'd never heard of, but the finished product is gorgeous.
