My buzz for this new TV show just went out of the airlock.

Nope not doing anything of the sort actually.

I don't like the name of the show or the current ship design but I will watch further trailers, previews and the pilot to see how it goes. I just said my current buzz for this show is now pretty low. I didn't say anywhere the show was going to be crap did I?

Funnily enough I didn't care for the original teaser of ST: Beyond and was well within my right to say I had concerns about it at the time but I watched further trailers & previews and then saw the thing I loved it. I am allowed to have valid concerns and still watch the show when it airs and then I will make my final judgement. That ship is bloody ugly in the current concept IMO but they have time to change it n use better CGI to show it off.

Like to take anything else I might say out of context?

I never said anything about the ship design meaning the characters or writing would be bad so how exactly am I basing the ENTIRE series on anything? I know what I meant since I wrote the dam thing.

When you said "my buzz for this new TV show just went out of the airlock" that's mainly what my reaction was. You basically said you lost all interest in the show, so no my comment to you was not taken out of context at all. I appreciate you clarifying, but I don't appreciate the accusation.

My God that looks awful, I can forgive the early test reel CG but that ship design is horrific. Out of an immense wealth of ship designs and ideas all they managed was coughing up an early and rightfully binned concept drawing?

It's no wonder they tried to get Axanar shut down, looks like it's from the same era and does it better.

Great teaser, and a great design. Clearly a Starfleet vessel, but with a look all its own, and it's giving off a very utilitarian vibe, which I'm a real fan of. Not concerned by the rendering - the design isn't finalised yet, so they're not going to spend too much time getting it nice and perfect if there's a chance it'll just be throwaway work anyway.

Except Axanar sucks. A project run by a self-righteous, IP-stealing, sociopathic windbag who has taken over a million dollars from people over the course of 2 years and has produced a grand total of 3 minutes of footage, while blatantly treading on someone else's trademark and using it for personal gain without any licensing. Instead of actually making the awesome movie they so often crow about, they'd rather use the crowdfunding money to pay themselves a salary.... for not actually fulfilling donor orders, and carpeting, and a studio.

Instead of actually making the movie, they'd rather go around threatening violence against people who speak out against them.

So yeah....screw Axanar.

To be fair he said the 'The ship designs in Axanar *LOOK* better'. Which to be fair they absolutely do, from the aesthetic I'm presuming they are from the same era and the STD design is absolutely awful while Axanar while ran by a potentially dodgy crazy person has absolutely nailed the look.

Wow, what an ugly ship design! I like the name Discovery, but if they seriously end up with this clunky monstrosity as the design for their hero ship, I will be disappointed. The teaser is odd, too. It's one thing to base the ship design on a concept that was done decades ago, but why also copy the asteroid aspect, too? Add to that some of the shittiest CGI work I have ever seen. This looks like something straight out of a bad fan production! And while I understand that this is just a promotional teaser and not the finished product, I think it's unwise to release it as the first glimpse into the new show. They really should have waited if this is all they could come up with until now.

I still remain optimistic that the series itself will be amazing, but this certainly puts a damper on my initial enthusiasm for the show.

Well, finally some solid news, and it's mostly good. I love the name Star Trek: Discovery-- I've proposed it many times-- and it's quite a relief to have confirmation that it's set in the prime universe. And the title does imply that we're going back to exploring strange new worlds, et cetera.

The ship could certainly look better. I'm not crazy about the harsh angles or the sepia tone. Like a lot of people, I got a bit of a Klingon vibe, so that may imply a future where the Feds and the Klingons are more closely allied. That would be a good thing. I'm also fine with another prequel series.

The idea of a post-TNG era where the Federation has split or collapsed does not appeal to me. However, given the current political climate in real life, a Star Trek series about overcoming internal conflicts and retaking Utopia would certainly be appropriate and in the ST tradition.

I am definitely excited about the new show. Originally, I was taken aback when I saw the ship design but it's grown on me. Plus, there's still a great deal we don't know about the show.

In short, it's an exciting time to be a Trek fan!

I'm really not sure how some people are getting a 'future' vibe from this, everything about the design screams Romulan war era and I just can't see how that would suggest Klingon influences? The design is horrific and even if the Federation was in ruins it wouldn't make sense to go back to a ~200 year old design concept that was binned. That would be like saying 'Oh no France has gone into recession so they have returned to building steam paddle boats!'.

The only entertaining thing so far is that the Acronym is 'STD'.

That's not why I responded to the post, though. It's the whole idea of "Look how ugly that ship is, Axanar is much better! No wonder CBS sued them....they knew their show sucked in comparison!"

I'm seeing that sentiment in several places online, and it's important to point out that while Axanar had good designs, they have pittance to show for 2 years of "work," they are blatantly treading on an IP they don't own, and let's be real....nothing Axanar came up with would touch a fully-funded, major studio-backed production. People who have read the script said that it was pretty bad and amateurish anyway. So this whole sentiment of "CBS crushed a potential rival!" just needs to die.

Besides...their designs looked good because we're used to them. This is new. And there's so much we haven't seen yet. And it's NEW Trek, which will ACTUALLY be on air in 6 months, You can count on CBS to deliver a product. Axanar is a pipe dream.

Yes, I know it's old. But it's an unused design from 1975...which means that to use it onscreen is new.

The ship is not what I was expecting. Like others I've got a Klingon vibe. It looks clunky but let's be honest starships don't really need to be aerodynamic.

The name is a bit meh. I dislike it when shows give us a ship name clearly designed to reflect the show. So Voyager will have to go on a long voyage and presumably Discovery will have to discover something(or be discovered). I think Enterprise and Defiant reflected the ships/show just as well whilst feeling more organic.

But for me it'll be the cast/writing that make or break it.

So we don't know what time period of the Prime Verse its set it but TOS seems the most likely. I would like to see the show set in the very early Federation days so the 1st class of deep space Federation vessels. I would love to see a show showing the early expansion of the Federation.

Terrible aesthetics on the ship though.

Motion picture era in some ways likely...prequels are a hornets nest. Though it's a teeny bit reminiscent of the sovereign so...who knows.

We will see.

All the 90s era hate here? Not cool. That's two thirds of all Trek, so why bother at all with the franchise if you don't like the vast majority of it to such an extent? No need to be so polarised...you might feel that TOS or Movie Era is the absolute best. It does not automatically make TNG or VOY era a pile of targ dung. Especially when that era is far and away when Trek was at its most popular and relevant as part of culture as a whole. It must have had something going for it right?

Anyway, here's hoping. I want to see the inside of the ship. Then I will know.

Whatever happens, roll on January. I want to sit down and watch new Trek on TV with my boy, as I did with my father.

Which is probably why people are saying that Axanar ****LOOKS**** better rather then *is* better. The LOOK part suggesting that they are solely referring to the cosmetics.

It truly amazes me..... You'd think people would understand by now that judging an entire show on a simple first image or teaser says nothing.

I agree completely, you can't judge a TV show based on a video snippet of what the new ship will look like.....BUT.....if I were producing the first new Star Trek TV series in 10 years, I would hope that the first hint of what's to come would be well received by the fans, something that would get them excited and wanting more! NOT the backlash, disgust and even anger that so many "fans" are showing over the new ship. It's almost like a new restaurant about to open and you give people of spoonful of your latest dish and they spit it out saying "that tastes like crap!" Not the reaction you want to see!!!
