Star Trek Discovery

Amen to that. I expected something cool or interesting. But not only is it a bad looking, the effects look like it was done by someone who just discovered 3D rendering software a month ago.

I mean... just look at this low-polygon horror:

It was a pre-production render made without final assets.
Look at my post above yours.

Honestly, I must say that after watching the trailer 10 times not only it had already grown on me, I really like the design. I'm much more curious about the main story and settings. Could we really get the Planet of the Titans story? Or it is just the coincidence? As for the ship: I think this is an early CGI test and nothing final. I don't think they will go with such bad quality effects as they have to leave up to what has come before, and the TOS remastered looks 1001 times more better than this.

Eh, I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that this was quickly thrown together, since it's a teaser. I do expect much higher quality CG and modeling later. Honestly, I can get past the wonkiness of the ship (I really don't like the design at all), I just want great stories and characters.

After having a few hours to think on it, that ship design, combined with the raw animation, reminds me of the sorts of things you saw on Trek Geocities websites back in 2000-ish. It looks like a fanwank come to life.

THAT BEING SAID....I'll await the final rendering, and who knows...it might have a REALLY cool interior featuring stuff we've never seen before (like dolphin tanks!). With the capability of green-screens and CGI these days, we can see stuff that it was never feasible to build a set for in the past. I'm actually hoping that it's a really homey ship like the Enterprise-D, for long voyages. That'd be cool.

Wow, I'm surprised by the backlash. I absolutely love the look of the ship.I love the triangular hull design (I wasn't aware of the Planet of the Titans project or Ralph McQuarrie's work prior to this reveal) and I think it really sets it apart from the other series. I'm looking forward to seeing a higher quality version of the CG model in action.

My 2 cents:
The triangular hull reminded me a lot of the Klingon D7 cruiser and judging from comments made by other fans I was not the only in thinking this. Could this ship be of Federation and Klingon design. Is this some new joint venture between Starfleet and the Klingon Empire or a new phase in their diplomatic relations? Have the Klingons in a post Dominion Alpha Quadrant joined the federation? The militaristic and slightly tribal music might indicate that the Klingons play a large role in this new series. Also, near the end of the teaser as the words"Star Trek Discovery" disappear the sound of a cloacking device can be heard. Does that mean that the Discovery can cloak?

I don't have a feeling on the ship yet. First impression is it looks too big and bulky but I will wait until the final product before I judge. I'm really hoping now we get some cast news at STLV.

The name of the show couldn't be anymore fan film esq and hammy if they tried to be honest. Also that is the worst looking SHIP EVER!!! I mean talk about ugly as fuck. Also why not wait to show us off the ship once you have the budget in place for decent CGI and not something you find being used in fan films. I don't want a prime universe show, we have a new universe to explore so lets explore it.

My buzz for this new TV show just went out of the airlock.

So you're basing an entire series, which we know little about, on the ship design? Charming.

It truly amazes me..... You'd think people would understand by now that judging an entire show on a simple first image or teaser says nothing. Plenty of shows with flashy, expensive trailers have been total snoozefests. Give it a rest guys, and wait untill we get something that's actually from the show. This was just quickly put together to serve as a title announcement.

Nope not doing anything of the sort actually.

I don't like the name of the show or the current ship design but I will watch further trailers, previews and the pilot to see how it goes. I just said my current buzz for this show is now pretty low. I didn't say anywhere the show was going to be crap did I?

Funnily enough I didn't care for the original teaser of ST: Beyond and was well within my right to say I had concerns about it at the time but I watched further trailers & previews and then saw the thing I loved it. I am allowed to have valid concerns and still watch the show when it airs and then I will make my final judgement. That ship is bloody ugly in the current concept IMO but they have time to change it n use better CGI to show it off.

Like to take anything else I might say out of context?

^ What you said wasn't actually taken out-of-context. The context was clear; it was and is just dumb.

I also don't understand this notion that the design of the ship is somehow not finalized. This might not be the exact CGI model that gets used in the show, but they didn't just 'toss it together' to have something to show the public. Like it or not, the design ain't changing.

Come on. Star Trek has a record of good special effects in the TV series. The presented model in the teaser doesn't have high quality textures at all. It is a clear test. It will get better. The design might be change too a little bit. I would love to see a better teaser for September for the 50th anniversary

This point I actually agree with. I mean, they've been working on this show for months now. You know that the ship is the first thing aside from a plot outline and character sketches that they thought of. You'd think that they'd actually put together a good, TV-quality CGI rendering for their premiere teaser, and release something that looked more professional than this.

Or, if you know that your animation is early and not ready, just scrap that idea and go for a "under construction" type teaser, showing flashes of concept designs, maybe peeks at prosthetics being used, uniforms (quick peek just to get people speculating), and unveil the logo with the music.

Game of Thrones did that for season 7's teaser. And of course the first ST09 had that teaser where they were "building" the Enterprise.

I never said anything about the ship design meaning the characters or writing would be bad so how exactly am I basing the ENTIRE series on anything? I know what I meant since I wrote the dam thing.

The ship designs in Axanar look a LOT better than this.

BUT since it's just an early teaser I'll give it a chance. Kinda underwhelming for a SDCC exclusive though.

Some mentioned feeling a Kingon influence. However the McQuarrie design (and thus variant too) has always reminded me of the Vulcan IDIC symbol

Ignore the gray and red circles, look at the blue cut out circle. The proportions of the triangle and circle compared with the McQuarrie design is pretty much identical.

Loved the trailer, loved the name and loved the ship design. To me the ship looks very utilitarian - something that is taken out into outer space to do some serious work, not just to show off shiny hull plating and sleek shapes. The updated overall color scheme works great, too. It really gives the show a fresh look.
