I never liked that Phase 2 design, so I can't say I'm a fan of it in the trailer (though the changes they've made did improve it.)

Everything else I liked. The lighting, the soundtrack, the feeling of "weight" they gave the ship and the fact space felt mysterious and foreboding (probably partly due to the lighting).

For what it's worth, seeing the trailer gave me a new appreciation for McQuarrie's design.

If I had to speculate, if it is indeed set in the Prime Universe, and if this is actually going to be the design they use, it's possibly a retrofit of an older starship (like the TMP Enterprise) due to the bubble phaser turrets. Then again, it might just be something to get fans talking, since many of them will recognize the obvious reference to Planet of the Titans.

I'm delighted the new show is set in the original continuity. Exactly what I wanted. As for the title, it sounds like a strong Star Trek title. I'm not crazy about the ship but that won't put me off. Even though we still don't know much I'm relieved it's going to be part of the established "Prime" universe and not a reboot or set in the "Kelvin" reality. I was dreading that.

I really like it. I think they want to show that they are digging into Trek lore a bit. Wouldn't be surprised if they thought the star destroyer vibe might appeal to some.

While I think it's quite possible Discovery is the Macguffin, not the hero ship, as I posted earlier, I don't think Fuller is messing with us. He started on Voyager. He spent the last two decades trying to do a new Trek show. This isn't a case of Abrams making a Trek movie because he didn't think he'd get to make a Star Wars movie - this is someone who, reportedly, is as obsessed with the franchise as most of the posters here. I don't see him messing with the fans

I I am not so quick to judge this by this clip, if so my view of Star Trek Beyond would have been negative from the start. Pretty ship no but from beneath it the secondary hull reminds me the delta shield a little.
I'm excited anyway.

The registry number of 'NCC-1031' (if it means anything) would seem conform to the theory that the new series it set just after The Undiscovered Country. For example the USS Whorfin (NCC-1024) was a ship in operation during the events of The Undiscovered Country. The Discovery would have been the 7th ship built after the Whorfin.

That being said, registry numbers, like Stardates, do not always go in numerical order.

Also, the USS Constellation in The Doomsday Machine was NCC-1017 despite being a sister ship of the Enterprise.

Which I always explained to myself as an earlier class ship (maybe with a single nacelle) that was upgraded to Constitution Class specs by adding the secondary hull with the twin nacelles.

This was pretty clearly a test render so I'm sure the final model will look excellent. As @Dennis said earlier, CBS can't really afford to let this show look cheap.

The registry number gives me hope that this will be set in the decades between ENT and TOS which, for me, is the most interesting period in the Trek timeline. There's a lot of room in there for some great stories. I really hope the Discovery isn't some old ship pulled out of mothballs. That's less interesting to me.

I'm also encouraged to hear that DSC will be serialized rather than episodic. Makes sense with the lower episode count. Can't wait to see what Fuller and his team have cooked up for us.

The books are the books - if you enjoy them then enjoy them. The TV show contradicting them doesn't make them disappear. You can still enjoy Best Destiny even though Generations contradicted it. You can still enjoy Federation even though FC/E contradicted it.

That kind of thinking always irritates me. I see it alot in reference to what happened with the Star Wars EU. It's missing the point completely. No one actually thinks that, for example, CBS will come confiscate my copy of Voyager: Full Circle. The worry is that they would quit making MORE books in that continuity. That's the whole point.
