Spoilers Dark Matter - Season 2

I doubt they put much thought into the physics of the gun; they wanted a big weapon with a "fun" impact. That they don't bother with a powerful gust of wind may be a function of that as well as limits on the amount of special effects they want to deal with.

However, the gun is a "black box" from our POV, with no knowledge of how it works or what its components do. There may be an advanced system to deal with recoil, but because it is part of the black box we don't know how it would work (for all we know, there is something inside that absorbs the energy). Or alternatively, even if the effects on-screen may not be entirely consistent, the energy is supposed to be released only on impact by some unknown mechanism. The point is, a weapon like this would not necessarily be useless in-universe because it would hurt its operator as bad or worse than the target (so there would be measures to prevent this, otherwise the gun would not be build), even if the laws of physics would be just as true as they are in the actual world.

I note that DM is not the kind of SF that delves into the impact of technology (small touches like Transfer Transit aside, maybe). The futuristic setting is used as a convenient backdrop to tell a story and to explore the characters; it could just as easily have been set inside a fantasy universe a la Game of Thrones, with magical elements to replace the near-magical technology that they use. Indeed, with Zairon it sometimes crosses over into that territory.

I doubt they put much thought into the physics of the gun;

They never do. But we viewers have nothing to do but think about the details of the show, so why not have a conversation about the physics? Why should their lack of thought be a reason for us to follow suit? How boring it would be to limit our imaginations only to what we see on the screen.

This is what sucks about being on ignore. Watching someone continue to post without realizing his arguments have been rebutted.

This is the network that is proudly promoting " Sharknado the 4th Awakens". That sets the standard for my level of. Interest in analyzing DM physics.

Can't wait to see your review of that one.

Dark Matter is a Canadian show produced for the Space channel. Syfy just rebroadcasts it. Like any television network, Syfy gets a range of different types of program from different sources and aimed at different audiences. Expecting every show on a network to be the same is as nonsensical as looking over a magazine rack and expecting to find the same content in Scientific American, Maxim, and Highlights.

I was surprised to see them to escape the prison so quickly, I was expecting them to spend a lot more time plotting and waiting.
I expected Franka Potente to last a lot longer too.
So is the woman from the beginning and end Five's mother? That was the impression I got from the pumpkin comment.
So it looks like One is definitely dead. I wonder if we'll still see Corso or if Marc Bendavid is totally done with the show.
I doubt Six will be unconscious for long.

I'm not sure - could be some sort of set up from his comment before he opened the door plus if he wants to get to the bottom of his wife's murder being dead might be the only way to do it.

But is he on good enough terms with Corso that he'd be willing to help him? I don't remember their previous encounter very well, but I would think him killing him would be a lot more likely.

Marc Bendavid's name has been removed from the credits. He's not included on the DVD box-set art that was released last week. It's safe to say he's no longer a regular.

Besides, it doesn't make sense that One and Corso would've staged the murder the way it was shown. After all, there were no witnesses except us viewers, so there was nobody for them to put on an act for.

We'll see Corso again, he's in one of trailers (footage that was obviously not from the season premiere). Unless it's yet another character played by Bendavid, or One gets revived somehow or it's a timejump or something.

Reynaud is the name of the sinister business woman. She may be family of Five, the way she spoke about her, though there doesn't appear to be any familial love if so.

I just hate the thought that all the build up between One and Three gets tossed aside without a proper confrontation, resolution, or vindication for Three (that he was setup as One suspected in the season opener). Plus One's final words "...I can do this", feels strange, leading to fun conspiracy theories on ways to wiggle out of what we saw happen onscreen.

Maybe not.

Steven Yeun's name was removed from the opening credits of the Walking Dead for a handful of episodes last season when his character was presumed dead but his name was re-inserted into the credits after the character reappeared. The Dark Matter producers may be pulling a similar stunt.

Obviously, but that's not the point. Mr. Adventure asked if an energy weapon would have recoil. Since the weapon was clearly shown as not having recoil, it seemed that he was asking whether it should have recoil after all, and that was the question I addressed.

Honestly, I really meant to ask "Do the energy weapons have recoil?" and more to the point I should've asked "Have the energy weapons on Dark Matter been shown to have recoil?". However, that said, I've enjoyed reading the discussion that my poorly worded question has provoked about energy weapons in general.

The Blacklist pulled this off even better with the character of Elizabeth Keen. Caught the fans totally flat-footed.

Well, I for one enjoy Dark Matter. I'm currently watching it and Killjoys and I have to say DM has gotten off to a much better start this year.

I suspected 5 was an imposter (or controlled) when she said "Kill them all" to our favorite android. I was like "whaaaaat?" our little gifted teenager said what?

Did I mention I just love our android? :luvlove: Very interesting, I wonder if sentiousness (is that a word?) will be brought up.

I don't think they will change actors for "One" although I'm not sure what they are going to call him now. I'm sure he will remain a part of the series. Should prove interesting.

I enjoy the chemistry between all these actors.

Didn't NuBSG also do the same when Starbuck was died?

Yes. Although some shows have fluid main cast credits where they don't appear if they're not in the episode (12 Monkeys, 24, The West Wing toward the end), probably so they don't have to pay them.

The Blacklist kept Megan Boone's name in the credits throughout.
