Personally, I think it's a bit of an insult to Takei. Gay men can (and he did) play straight men, so I don't see why they felt the need to do this. And Takei's Sulu was established as straight.

Wow, while Sulu would not have been my choice to make gay, you're definitely overreacting. Not once do we ever get a clear indication of Sulu's sexuality in TOS. Takei claims the character is straight, but those claims are not canon. And making the character gay is not an insult to Takei. Even though Takei has voiced his displeasure with the idea, I don't think he feels insulted.Personally, I think it's a bit of an insult to Takei.
