THE LAST SHIP Season 3 - spoilers, reviews, discussions and junk...

Dichen Lachman wanders into yet another show I watch...

Not often you see a story involving the Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese. Some interesting things going on there but they seem to have brought in the ground action at the cost of the usual interior space on the Nathan James. Not sure if that will change as the series goes on but it was very bridge bound for these first two episodes. Is this one of those deals where they didn't really plan on having a third season?

I'd imagine that Nathan James interiors are the cheapest scenes to film, after the presidential office interiors. (And that mansion the summit took place in was totally the same place Coulson and Co. visited a few months back.) Sure, the CG explosions aren't the best, but nothing about these eps struck me as budget-starved.

Good stuff as always! (And yes, delaying the airing of the nightclub premiere was absolutely the right call.) For a while, I half-expected a reveal of Dr. Scott alive and working in secret, but looks like she's truly gone for good, alas. And the irradiated area helo takeoff area made for a uniquely tense sequence.

Big Brother Burk made a strong impression in mere minutes of screen time. I suspect China won't turn out to actually be the Big Bad, but to even have that as a real possibility is a far cry from the state of things on the blockbuster movie side of Hollywood.

A quick search shows that Hong Kong is roughly 700 miles from Vietnam, so I guess Sierra/Jiaying had some refueling spots along the way (which may have been mentioned, I don't recall), or the show (no doubt correctly) figured we Yanks aren't too concerned with the geography of Asia. (TBH, I thought it would be a bigger and less plausible distance.) Even if she did, there was definitely some time-fudging going on, also. But, hey, pass the popcorn and roll with it, eh?

If you look it up the distance between Hanoi and Hong Kong is roughly 540 miles. She said the chopper had about a 600mile range. Which is plausible for Chinese military helicopters. Some have longer range with added fuel tank.

How does everybody feel about Rhona Mitra's replacement, the crazy spy lady from "Agent Carter?"
I'm assuming you mean Sasha, Chandler's new love interest/ex from years ago. She's okay, although there's not much to go on yet I did like the flirting while pretending to translate to/for the Chinese guy. That was an amusing scene. She can still kick ass despite her military career being in the past and she's been doing her current desk job for presumably a few years. Her being involved in shady dealings and that the Chinese President might actually have legitimate grievances against her are certainly an interesting side to her I look forward to learning more about.

Yes, she's been in lots of things recently. Was one of the bad guys in final season of White Collar as well...

Just finished episode 3, and ooh this was so good. Not surprisingly, Chandler has resumed direct command over the Nathan James. Although I stated I was against the idea last week, I'll admit, it has created some interesting drama anyway, particularly with Chandler choosing Granderson to continue being the acting XO despite Burk Sr. having seniority. Burk Sr. continues to impress me, with the professional and stoic detachment he received the news of his technical "demotion" despite the fact he is in fact pissed off over it. The scene him and regular Burk venting his frustration over the matter was a good one. I like we still get him and Granderson working together, now inverted regarding which one is in charge, although he is showing some (understandable) attitude.

Our other stand out new character who continues to impress this week is Sasha, who really is turning into quite the badass. I loved the scene where she up ends the shot glass and everyone present, including the parrot, turns and takes notice. You just can't ask for something more awesome!

The story unfolds with Slattery and others held captive by who we now know is a former Japanese captain turned infamous and elusive pirate intent on keeping them healthy enough to continue to use as a source for blood transfusions. The dinner scene between the pirate captain and Slattery had a really cool vibe to it.

So, as expected, it appears the Chinese helicopter is going to be a permanent fixture with Dichen Lachman staying on as the pilot. It'll be interesting to see this develop over the season, with something so critical to the ship's mission essentially under the control of a civilian outside the military chain of command. I know, chances are all this will really result in is Lachman will get snappy one-liners in situations where it's inappropriate, which the crew will put up with only because she isn't military, but hey, could be fun.

I guess everyone in the mercenary pirate bazaar is immune or has been vacinated. There certainly isn't any six foot rule like on Containment. With everybody armed why did the MSS zero in on a few more? And after an extended fire fight people are still standing around to watch a fist fight and not running for cover.
They may not be the immune death cult crazy but they are not acting like survivors of a global pandemic either

It looks like the US Navy is starting to withdraw its support. The Eurcopter standing in for a Chinese helicopter must be cheaper to keep in the air than a Seahawk

Actually, I do remember it being said during the first two seasons the US Navy could not guarantee them a helicopter on a regular basis. It was because of this they abandoned plans for having a helicopter pilot as a regular character ins season 1, and presumably this resulted in the general inconsistency of the helicopter. I'm guessing that's why it was destroyed in the premiere, replaced by one the production staff can rely on.

Although, I find it kind of ironic that it apparently is easier to rent an Arleigh Burke class destroyer than it is a helicopter.
I thought the shot glass scene was cheesy.
It was the parrot that got me. When it turned and took notice, I just burst out laughing. When I was done, I decided "that's the best scene of anything I've seen all year."

That was my reaction too! I have a parakeet, and I had to check and see if she was looking too. Sadly, no.

Seahawks are made specifically to perform a variety of military functions and are needed pretty much everywhere the navy's deployed. The "Chinese" helicopter is actually a bare-bones civilian French model that some aviation company likely rents out specifically to make movies. An Arleigh Burke is big enough and versatile enough to both film and carry out its responsibilities.

So, yeah...easier.

But...it looks like you can get a good pilot for a cheeseburger and a cherry cola. :)

Well in a world where you are rationing Captain Crunch a happy meal is a big thing. Given the politics of tabacco I was surprised by the pack of smokes
