CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

"Empty Airport Bathroom" is also the location for the next Axanar panel.

I got to say, all jokes and snark aside, Axanar did get a LOT of attention and its panels were pretty filled while at Denver Comic Con this weekend. For better or worse, it's clear that they've tapped into what a lot of people WANT to see at any rate.

How long did you talk with him?

One-on-one? Just a few bits of a few moments each. It was a very busy schedule between the booths.

It's the level of it, really. I don't pull punches about Axanar and my opinion of what's going on. And I'll mock the trial and tease Alec for his behavior.. (seriously, I'm not exactly a subtle person), but it's pretty clear that some people have gone well and beyond snark and teasing to serious stalkerish territory, and I think that fuels their own indignation.

As for 'what I learned', it wasn't really NDA level of anything, just a clearer understand of what Alec and his side is thinking and feeling (that latter may be being far more important) in this case and why things continue to be so abrasive. Not agreeing with their position (and I've really only seriously looked at the legal perspectives), but it was a pretty humanizing moment. for me.

It is very interesting.

But I think no matter how much they feel they are sincere and how much some fans are on their side, the studios simply cannot allow tentpole invaders from all directions, newly empowered with cheap production and distribution mechanisms.

The IP has to be walled much more stongly now that Axanar has poked its nose in the tent not just presenting high quality production values, but overtly funding a permanent business out of it. If not, there will be 20 permanent 'fan film' studios around the world next year making directly competing 'additional/spinoff episodes' of all the popular shows, selling it into local networks, and justifying their 'fan' status by getting 'donations' from more and more murky sources.

No doubt Axanar Productions does not want to acknowledge what it would mean to the industry to allow the Axanar model to be replicated. No doubt Axanar Productions just wants to say judge us by our sincerity and our own scope. But I think the world will see it as an opportunity to make a land rush on a key money making industry if what Axanar has done turning fan films into an unlicensed IP business model is left standing.

I just don't see any amount of sincerity of belief in the entitlement of fans competing with the impact of a direct large scale assault on the core money making process of a major industry. The IP holders may or may not level Axanar Productions to bare soil, but they will surely try to shut off the means by which anyone can try this in the future.

Yes. That is where I began my own journey from Donor Total Supporter, to 'Wait a minute, what's going on here?', to my current position in this matter that is gravely concerning to me.

The trailer is garbage. Robert Meyer Burnett should be embarrassed by the utter bargain basement quality of that trailer, especially if he's hanging his hat on being a "professional" director and editor. Just atrocious.

My comments and opinions about Alec Peters and how he's conducted himself during this mess, as well as the many years prior to this toward myself or anyone else who dared to question him are well documented on this site and elsewhere. I will simply close with the fact -- FACT -- that he richly deserves everything he's gotten. No, I don't think we should discuss his love life, or visit Ares Studios for shits and giggles but I'm likewise not sorry to see the pathetic wretch squirm now that he's finally having his feet held to the fire and his misdeeds are at last catching up with him. He may have had all the best intentions in the world, but he was a grade-A, classless asshole about it nearly every step of the way. That's he's now a veritable joke in this town is merely icing on the cake that will be the summary judgment shutting him down once and for all, and hopefully it will prevent others from falling for his long con schtick ever again.

I think Alec is the classic internet bully. The moment he's safe behind the transparent aluminum barrier the social restraints go down and he just spews, whereas in person there's a real danger someone might outyell him. It's easy to treat someone badly at a remove, and much harder when face to face. "I'll kick your ass" in safe enough to tweet, and much more dangerous to say so in person, where someone might just beat the crap out of you.

Well, I'm sure it's because of the 'circus' style atmosphere generated when either Alec peters or RMB go off on a blog/twitter rampage on something Axanar related. IE - Everyone knows the 'on-line' personality of Alec Peters and Co. and they want to see if they're the same way in person.

I have zero doubt that Alec Peters in person is probably charming and well spoken. Most people who clamor for public approval can schmooze with the best of them; and I'm sure it's a factor in how Alec is able to start business ventures/get funding. But it's his other side that mostly comes out on line or in private; whenever he feels he's overly/unfairly challenged or questioned. You then go from 'Supporter' to 'Hater' - and the claws come out.

Basically, it's what you call 'two-faced': As in he'll treat you one way to your face; but treat you way differently in private, or when speaking to others or posting online.
^^^
That seems to be a core aspect of Alec Peters personality and from what evidence exists online, he's been that way a LONG time.

More Trek.

I'm not going to get into the merits of it or anything, or discuss specific flavors... just that there's an audience hungry for this material and it's not currently being served. We're back in the 1970s-1980s dry spell, and everyone's looking to quench their thirst on SOMETHING.

How many people went to visit his booth not knowing anything about Axanar at all, or not knowing about the law suit, or only knowing what JJ Abrams told them???

Since Enterprise went off the air, there have been two movies, with another on the way and a TV show in the works, Not to mention the tons and tons of merchandising that has been produced in the past eleven years. I get as bored of the argument there hasn't been anything as I do that JJ Trek isn't Star Trek.

If people don't like what's being produced, there are comics and books and home video and plenty of other sci-fi franchises out there. Star Trek has to adapt. It has been doing just that. I'm sorry that some can't accept that.

I wanted to say something similar, but this feels like a derail, a very familiar derail.
Suffice to say that folks who feel that fan fiction is filling a void, a void created by the current custodians of Trek, are in the minority.

Most fanfic creators I have no problem with. However, perception is everything. Alec has not left a good impression on many. If he has anyone to blame for anyone demonizing him, it's only himself.

Notice that I did not say that I agree with him, or that I have made any attempt to justify his actions. I simply reported on my personal experience with him which made me question the more .. personal takes I've seen. That's it. Whatever you personally think of him, I feel more than a little pressure that I MUST join in the darker corners of hating him, and I wish you guys would stop trying to recruit me for that.

Ask any veteran of this board and they'll tell you that I've been in many flame wars and I've had my share of infamy. And the thing that I've noticed most, the thing that strikes me the most, is that both hating and being hated are miserable things. It destroys who you are and what you accomplish... you'll forgive me if I don't want to dive headlong back into that.

Robert Burnett tells the LA Times he isn't optimistic the copyright lawsuit will turn out well for Axanar.

http://www.latimes.com/entertainmen...xanar-lawsuit-update-20160617-snap-story.html

Robert Meyer Burnett: "It has been going through the court system exactly the same way it had been before [Abrams] made that announcement…. I think, unfortunately, the outcome ultimately is not going to be favorable to us and certainly not for our fans and our donors.”
