Licensing? AP don't need no stinking licensing! You suggest that new media distribution is becoming cheaper. Fair. But you still have to pay for content. Which means that Alec will have to get the rights to stream the content. And he'll also have to pay a licensing fee. Before the suit, maybe there was a possibility that he could get some content, but not enough to draw a ton of subscribers in. Not to make it profitable. Now, there's no way in hell a major studio will license anything to Alec Peters.

All he needs is a few bucks worth of yard sale DVDs!![]()
One of the main things that AP wanted to do with his streaming service was to be like Sci-Fi Channel in the early 90s and stream old school sci-fi shows. I'm not denying the fact that something might supplant Netflix and the rest.

That Alec had as a main strategy streaming old content on demand is not what I got from his prospectus, but I could have been projecting my own impressions of common sense into it.
I thought they were arguing that fans would want content the studios were unwilling to make or allow into their continuities, and that industrial strength monetizers like CBS on Demand or Netflix would not have customer mindspace to add to the rotation.
This lockout would be the fate of many new productions, so there might be a market to pick up this tier, since the current video distribution systems aren't really great for monetizing or controlling rights (oops ). It could also be a place to host content that fans want carried on past the end of a series.
Of course in some cases there could still be clearances to negotiate, but if the basic market proposition is strong, it wouldn't have to be limited to SF. Word of mouth could sell content and keep it alive.
For the most part I would not imagine this mechanism would be using existing content, except as filler.
ROB: “I can see that we might have our own [...] internet satellite streaming channel that will come all over the world and it’ll all come back here to Ares Studios and we can custom design entertainment in ten years. People will come up with ideas the same way that Amazon is having a bake-off with their pilots--they’ll make pilots and depending on feedback, they’ll go and make a series out of something. Well they’re going to have their own...they have their own distribution network already in place. If you want to watch an Amazon Original, you go to Amazon and watch it via streaming. I could see us having ten channels in the future of not just Star Trek programming but all kinds of programming that we’re going to create. You and I are working on a project with David Gerrold that would be perfect for this.
ALEC: “Absolutely”
ROB: “And it would be going directly to Ares Studios subscribers or Axanar subscribers. We might have a fan base worldwide of 50 million people that are all donating, you know, five bucks or 9.95 a month to get what we’re producing which is sort of what we want to do. I mean, if you’re thinking about in the long run, we want to produce programming and entertainment whether it’s movies or shows or podcasts like this one that are specifically targeted to the fan. The discerning fan, who has a wide breadth of knowledge on many different subjects that we’re trying to touch on.
ALEC: “Yeah, I mean why do we not have SyFy Channel turned on constantly all day long. Shouldn’t we? I mean I...listen...I did ten years ago or whenever it was the Irwin Allen channel...I mean, it was on all the time because I love that stuff. But nowadays there’s such dreck on SyFy Channel. They’ve really gotten rid of all the shows that we really want to watch. The ‘Battlestar Galacticas’. And now they’re like ‘maybe we were wrong about that. Maybe we need to come back...’ Yeah, you do! And because there’s no one place for...what a phenomenal genre. How big is science fiction? There’s great science fiction movies that come out and get enormous audiences. But there’s no one place where you can go in and go, ‘I’ll just turn this on and leave it on all day long’ because after Star Trek, they’ve got Battlestar Galactica and then Lost in Space and then they’ve got you name it. Yeah, so, I think we’re all in the same place and talking to fans who have become really good friends of mine through Axanar, they all want the same thing.

The way I read it, if they cannot confirm or deny whether Lin/Abrams knew what they were talking about, it could be a first salvo at claiming that whoever spoke to Lin/Abrams was not in effective contact with the legal team and their direct clients, and therefore did not know the real bottom line. This might lead to plausible deniability if they want to walk back the Lin/Abrams statement in any particular regard.
I honestly hope IT's NOT the latter - and we see this case fully adjudicated in the court system and Alec Peters and Axanar truly get what they deserves
RMB was complaining on Twitter today that the lawsuit hasn't gone away. Dude's got his head so far up AP's ass that his dentist is Peters' proctologist.
The "real" Starfleet could have probably built an entire ship in the time it's taken them to get that far on their bridge. They've been working on that for how *fraking* long, and THAT's all they have to show for it???? Where is the sets & props money being spent????
I had the exact same thought.Licensing? AP don't need no stinking licensing!

Also, more proof of what an ass RMB is:

This has turned into an even worse train-wreck than I thought imaginable. It's bad enough that they got into this mess but to blow a golden opportunity to get out with some shred of dignity intact is stupidity heaped on stupidity.
The date to name the John Doe defendants has passed. I asked the question already: to add him now would take a special request to the judge with STRONG reasoning why he needs to be added and a very good explanation why he wasn't before that deadline. Ergo, he feels safe because he pretty much is. He's not 100% safe, however, so he really shouldn't poke that bear too much.RMB should feel lucky that he hasn't yet been named a DOE, why would he continue to tempt fate?
