I understand the consensus is supposed to be that the theory has been debunked, but I still believe that the dwindling populations of neanderthals probably interbred with more modern hominids and were eventually subsumed into the human gene pool. They certainly would have been out-competed for all other resources, but if they were as intelligent as we think they were, throwing themselves on the mercy of a stronger and better adapted neighbor would be a worthy survival strategy.I believe that the Neanderthals were as intelligent as their modern companions. They just died out and were beaten to the punch by modern humans. Imagine had they survived.
