Wow this thread got unnecessarily personal. I'm pretty open about Nu trek not being my cup of tea but this is all pretty heartfelt.

Sure, we might have been shown some efforts to catch the saboteur but as far as the big picture I can live with assuming such efforts occurred, likely by some underlings rather than the bridge crew who were busy elsewhere saving the day.

On a starship with hundreds of people busily doing their respective jobs it's safe to say someone was dealing with the situation, most likely from a security point of view (ie taking measures to prevent further attempts) rather than an actual investigation as such. In either case it's an omission I can live with without taking any great offence.

As to my preferred guess, obviously none of the "heroes" are in the frame and our usual suspect (ie newcomer of the week - Carol Marcus) seems to be in the clear. I'm guessing somebody on the crew had a setup similar to Tom Harwood's who was willing to die for whatever he/she was offered.

Cupcake would be unlikely to have the skills - his job is to stand there looking intimidating but there is one suspect for me who seems to literally go under the radar.

Watch how Keenser reacted in ST09 when Scotty abandoned him to go to the Enterprise, clearly his jealousy got the better of him and hoped by sabotaging the ship he would find them both back on the asteroid together. As it happened Scotty stormed off in a huff over the torpedoes so he got what he wanted for a while anyway, notice that he didn't return with him when Kirk called - see, jealousy again.

I thought it was just something pre-programmed and no saboteur was actually physically there but I haven't watched it in ages so I'm probably wrong. And even if there was meant to be one and the writers forgot about it, you can have the best of intentions and sometimes stuff like that just happens.

Chekov says there was a failure in the coolant system, the core overheated and he had to manually take them out of warp.

Someone could have maunally constricted a coolant feed, done so that it just got enough high warp time from the core to get them into Klingon space before the overheating was noticed and potentially damaging.

Or just programmed it as you say, to only feed enough coolant to get them there, then delete/ignore the command. So that the only thing stopping them in either case was shoring up the system and cooling the core before going back to warp.

Of course, the Klingons would have found them by that point had they just done what Marcus told them to.

No one needed to be on board to do either, the Enterprise was belting right for Kronos, all the core had to do was get them there and break down, since the ship was never meant to make it back.

Same here - Markus had a team put in a time delay for the malfunction so tgey would be in Klingon space or near it.

The top speed or average time to get from Earth to their destination was probably widely known.

NEVER felt a person on board did it no need to hunt search for them in movie at all when it was pre-programmed

It's really thanks to the sabotage that the ship survived!

I doubt Kirk could have overheard his conscience calling if not for the shaking of assumptions he got from the failure of the engines at a critical moment. He would just have ordered the torps fired, trusting their stealth (either a complete sham to start with, or then something else engineered to fail) would protect him, and the Klingons would have immediately responded with anti-starship forces. And a working warp core would not have protected Kirk for long in that case...

So one has to wonder whether Marcus' saboteur was incompetent or unlucky, or whether the premature failure of the core was another part of the shadow fight between Marcus and Khan...

Kirk changed his mind before the coolant leak.

Shortly after leaving star base he broadcast their mission to the crew and he paused before saying they would fire torpedoes looked at Soock (w Spock looking at him) and said he would personally lead a landing party to the surface of Kronos

Then the warp core malfunctioned much later.

I feel the coolant leak was programmed by Markus operatives before leaving star base
