Joe Menosky and Aron Coleite joins writing staff

That's fantastic news. Although I can't wait for the day where we get some trek 17 news that isn't staff oriented:lol:
 
I'm surprised to see another writer with Trek history, I figured they'd be going for mostly people with no Trek history outside of Fuller, Meyer, and Beyer.

Of all the good Trek writers out there they hired Joe Menosky, who not only wrote a number of bland and forgettable Voyager episodes, but one of the worst TNG episodes ever: "The Chase"* (as well as the fan-lambasted "Masks"*)

He also wrote Darmok, Time's Arrow, Future's End, Distant Origin, Year of Hell, and Living Witness. Even the best writers turn out a dud from time to time.
 
I'm actually quite fond of a lot of Menosky episodes that aren't well-regarded, like "Masks" and "The Thaw." I thought it was quite interesting the way he used technology to turn abstract concepts or archetypes into threats.
 
Happy to hear this. Menosky has written some of the best episodes in the franchise.

Coleite worked with Fuller on the first season of Heroes, so I'm guessing that's how he got picked up.
 
It would be nice if there was a bit more diversity in the writers' room. Unless I missed someone, so far they've made five staff hires, all of them white, and four of them male.

Well, the showrunner is openly gay, so there's that. And Meyer's just a consulting producer, which is more a senior advisor than a full-time staffer (more like Merlin than a Knight of the Round Table, so to speak), so that means he doesn't take up a slot in the writers' room per se. Menosky's latest gig was as a consulting producer on Salem, so it's unclear whether he'll be consulting here as well.

But yes, I would like to see a greater diversity of voices represented -- not only in terms of gender and ethnicity, but also professional background. I'd like to see more producers who don't have a history with Trek, who can bring new perspectives and sensibilities.

Let's see... Coleite's got the seniority to be at least a co-executive producer or an executive producer. Menosky would be at a comparable level if he isn't just a consulting producer. It's not unheard of for a one-time executive producer to take a lower-ranking position on someone else's staff, but I doubt it would be anything below supervising producer. Below that are producer, co-producer, story editor, and staff writer. Kirsten would presumably start out in one of the lower tiers, since her experience is mostly with prose rather than TV. So I imagine there are still at least three more posts to fill, possibly more (since there could be more than one person at a given rank).

There are at least two female writers (Kirsten Beyer & Gretchen Berg) and an African American writer (playwright Kemp Powers).

No, you didn't. :) The Trek FM podcast from yesterday is the first I heard some of these names. It sounds like there was a press release that went out with many of these names around the time the CBS trailer was released but as far as I can find, no one else reported it until yesterday (and TrekCore and TrekMovie have not reported it at all).

I believe they were just guessing when they named Gretchen Berg, Aaron Harberts and Kemp Powers as they have a history working with the producers. Although, I may be wrong.
 
Hmm. So a lot of people Fuller has worked with before, but drawn from multiple different parts of his career -- Menosky (and maybe Kirsten) from Voyager, Alexander from Heroes and Hannibal, Coleite from Heroes, Berg & Harberts from Wonderfalls and Pushing Daisies. And a couple of authors whose main work has been in other media, Kirsten (novelist) and Kemp Powers (playwright/journalist). That's interesting.

And between Fuller, Berg, Powers, and Kirsten, there's a fair number of people offering something other than a hetero white male perspective.
