New Voyages Site Update?

It seems a shame, if this is the end, and even more so the final episodes dont get released. Bread and Savagery being a prime example.

I'm constantly seeing set updates from James's Facebook page with a high level of detail put into the work. So if NV is closing up shop then why all the detailed work to sets? Is this just a recently decided development? James often vists this forum, so hopefully we can hear it directly from him. I would hope at least the 3 episodes in development can get finished.

I think maybe it's a good thing to see an end in sight and quit while the iron is hot? I've followed NV/PII since DAY ONE and while I'd be sad to see it go I love it. It's a true labour of love and the quality is breathtaking.

This is the show that not only brought back Gerrold, Fontana, Koenig and Takei to Star Trek but actually brought to life the lost series Phase II to a degree, through lost episodes being adapted, the use of unused uniforms and the updating of the ship. I loved the idea ofd properly moving Star Trek forward. I think to me that added much more to 'making new episodes', adding to the canon if you will. Also we got throw-forwards to the Excelsior and TNG eras.

How many episodes are to be released? Torment of Destiny, The Protracted Man & Bread and Savagery? I know they originally planned 22 episodes but things have changed and the release gaps have gotten wider - NV deserves that epic finale James told us about - Enterprise parking at spacedock and the crew seeing their new uniforms. It would be a testement to the fans rather than not finishing - there are even small character arcs that need wrapping up.

Search this very forum for anything you can find about Kitumba. There lie the answers you seek. Spoiler Alert: Everyone's favorite asshole, Alec Peters, played a huge part of that process too.

I sincerely hope however that James will not be shutting down New Voyages. While I have had my issues with the production but I do not want to see it go away.

If I recall, isn't Peter's the one that got P2 to "upgrade" and spend a whole shit ton of money, and move to a bigger more expensive place, and start crowdfunding, when P2 had been fine for years before his involvement, as well? I could be wrong. Apologies if I am.

They started upgrading the sets soon after STC launched as they retooled with Brian Gross. James always denied any sort of rivalry between the two, but it sure seemed as an outsider that STC stole the limelight away and a lot of what PII/NV did seemed to be an attempt to raise the bar. Add in perfectionist tendencies and you have a recipe for things getting delayed or abandoned.

I would have no problem with a decision to wrap things up in an orderly fashion. James owes us viewers nothing and we owe him an enormous debt of gratitude for so much enjoyment. (I think the point that he may owe it to the many dedicated volunteers who worked NV to put out as much of the product they helped make is well taken, but that's a separate issue) After spending many years in radio and television, I have learned that one of the things that really is difficult to achieve is to be able to walk away from a long-term gig on one's own terms. With the curtain getting ready to close on the current era of fan films (I am quite sure that any new rules will radically alter the playing field) this may be a perfect time to say goodbye and look for new horizons. I wish James nothing but the best, whatever course he decides to take.

This is sad to hear NV/PII episodes got me into watching Trek fanfilms. His episodes and quality of effects were groundbreaking. Thanks James and I wish you the best in you future projects.

My understanding was the move was necessary. Their first location was next to a busy, noisy hi-way, which is not ideal for making movies. It was also very hot to film in during mid-Spring and Summer.

Yup, 100 degree days while filming Star Trek Of Gods and Men a decade ago. Rain on the metal roof making ADR a must. ah the good old days.. :)

Well the new series will start in January 2017 and Enterprise went off the air in May of 2005 so that's almost a dozen years with no trek on TV. Hard to believe.

Yeah. You know if you count TAS there was a 13 year gap between having a version of 'Star Trek' on TV; as TNG premiered in 1987* - so there's a possible tend emerging here. ;)

[*- Well - Star Trek on TV everywhere else in the world as here in the U.S. Star Trek 2017 will only be on CBS 'All Access' after they air the pilot episode of CBS.]

If true, it would be a real shame. James and his crew really set the bar on what a production should be. I've enjoyed them tremendously. And I think James did a bang up job as Kirk.
Let's hope he'll change his mind.

OK, corrected, then - but Peter's ego still made him try to spearhead all of that, and I know for a fact that I've read that he is the one that talked them into using kickstarter.... if I'm remembering properly.

Just definitely seems to be a pattern with the man...

Here's hoping this is just a passing fit of pique or ennui. NV/P2 still has stories to tell, but if this really is the end, so long and thanks for all the fish.

Their first episode, "In Harm's Way", is still my favorite fan-film ever (Of Gods And Men comes in a close second), but I was kind of ticked when it first came out. I wrote a short story (posted here: http://www.trekbbs.com/threads/short-story-set-in-st-tos-era-timelines.221197/), and several people asked if I based my story on "In Harm's Way". I did not. I hadn't seen it. I hadn't heard of it before people asked about its connection to me story -- THERE IS NO CONNECTION -- and all the grief I got over it all. I hated the show and the entire New Voyages concept. But after watching it for the second time, to show my wife what had me upset and her saying "That was great", I watched it again. And again. And again. After about the eighth or tenth viewing, I had to wonder why I was trying so hard to hate it so much. I have since watched several other fan-films, and while some are good, only Of Gods And Men comes close for me. The next two in line are Needs Of The Many and Come Not Between Dragons.

"In Harm's Way" was their second episode. They retroactively renumbered "Come What May" to be episode zero... whatever that means.

I can understand why they did that, as "Come What May" is pretty rough in comparison to their later work. While "In Harm's Way" has jagged edges, the improvement from Episode 'Zero' to Episode One is pretty extraordinary.
