STO Coming to PS4 & Xbox One!

The UI for consoles is totally different to what it for the PC. I remember I link on facebook a week or two ago. I'll try find that link before I go to bed.

Well since it isn't cross-platform, there will probably be changes to accommodate it.

But yeah, being a MMO there would be no slow down.

Well, reaction times will be slower than on pc, I guess? But everyone will have that handicap, since they play on different servers.
And it's not like you need to be lightning fast at PvE or need more than 3 abilities to win.

Once you memorize where your ability is slotted in the menu, you don't need it open for more then a second anyways.

Yeah, and if you do only favour three abilities they'll probably let you hotmap them to buttons, as they do in DAI.

Looks like they are installing a new lighting rig for the change, makes it look verra nice. Being able to optimize for console will help a lot, as well. The main thing I'm worried about if the UI- STO is, like most MMOs, about clicking your powers. Not quite sure how we'll be able to do that with a controller.
They also have that shooter mode too, which would make things easier, at least on the ground.

I'd be really interested to see how ground-combat works in the latest version of the game. When I played (Y1), it didn't really play like a shooter on the ground. It played more like strategy combat- I'd give my character an order (like: shoot that person), then work out what my additional crew could do to buff that Captain while supporting that combat action. I found it you viewed it like Starship combat it was less frustrating (because your instinct is to play it like a shooter, which didn't work in Y1). If they did tweak it to make it more like a shooter, I wouldn't complain.

They added a shooter mode to STO I think in the 2nd year, that is what they'll be using in the console version.

It still plays the same basically, but you have a crosshair instead of a mouse cursor, aiming over something targets it automatically, and untargets when you're not aiming at it.
When in shooter mode you can use powers without targets, you can throw grenades over scenery and that.

The powers still work the same.

Some more console info from a recent interview

Al explains that PC players will receive new content first before the console players because of the way console games have to be certified by their respective owners (Microsoft and Sony). Also, for the PC, they are able to repair bugs and exploits immediately, but with consoles, an exploit or bug can go several weeks to months before fixes are certified for release. So, it’s important that they only send working updates to the consoles and that can only happen after it has been out on PC for some time.

Mike asks about the Graphics pass that is being worked on for the console release. It will eventually be released to the PC after it has been released for the console. With the graphic pass, they have been going through and repairing bugs on as many missions as possible. No date has been announced for the console release. The console will eventually get Agents of Yesterday but not at launch.

It may be more efficient and simpler, but it's not nearly as fun. As hotkeyed, cool-down based MMOs go, STO's ground combat is extremely mediocre. The mechanics are simplistic and there isn't a lot of variety. The pseudo FPS mode at least makes it a bit more lively. Frankly, if it wasn't for that, I probably wouldn't bother with ground at all.

I have to admit, this makes me wonder if we're closing in on the maintenance only phase. Especially given the difficulty of doing updates for three different systems (they couldn't even keep the Mac version going). The graphics overhaul isn't even going to touch the textures and models.

This just tastes of trying to squeeze out the last dollar from the game.

If anything, it's the opposite. With Star Trek: Beyond and a brand new Star Trek tv series just around the corner, they're actually looking to expand Star Trek Online even further. The developers are already in talks with CBS and Brian Fuller's team on what they can do to incorporate the new series lore.
