STO Coming to PS4 & Xbox One!

Just to point out the game isn't cross platform, nothing you have on PC will carry over, no characters, no C-Store purchases. Though they will probably have a linking bonus like they did with Neverwinter.

^^^^^^^

This a bit crap. How difficult could it be to log into your account, regardless of computer platform, and for the software in the background to load up the right configuration for whatever computer system you use? (Presumably, very difficult!).

I've never actually played, so I don't really need to worry about things carrying over. But does that mean I won't be able to join up with people playing the PC version? That would be unfortunate. What about the two different consoles... will people on a PS4 be able to join up with those playing on an Xbox?

(Sorry for the n00b questions. Never played an MMO before.)

That's a lot crap for me, as I have 3 high level characters with tons of specialty gear and allotments from when I was a premium player.

No Cross-platform at all.

One of the reasons is that patches on the XB1 (not sure about PS4) have to get approval, unlike the PC where they can just push it out. Neverwinter (one of Cryptics other MMOs) on the XB1 is usually a month behind the PC.

So if your PC character had items/missions not in the current version of the console, it wouldn't work.

^^^ I wonder why don't they tyhen roll out all the updates, once XB is no longer on the "critical path" to delivery?

Because we wouldn't be able to test it for them
Also it would kill the economy, imagine a few dozen people with millions of DC and thousands of Dil (if dil works the same way) coming in. It would ruin it.

new interview with STO's EP (Starts around 20 minutes in)

http://priorityonepodcast.com/po271/

Summary from reddit user mhall85

  • Queue rotation was talked about, but this time, just about bonus reward events. Salami likes a "queue day" or week-long bonus reward event.
  • Console version won't have every feature currently in-game, at launch. This is a goal, however, post-launch: the console will have all game features at some point.
  • "There is a cost for the pretty," but the new lighting engine won't affect older PCs negatively. If your machine can't handle the new engine, it will just use the current settings.
  • He reiterates that PC and Console will be separate, at least for now. No cross-gameplay, no account transfers. Goal of the console push is to make a bigger overall community.
  • Beta program for console is "possible."
  • PC version can/will easily benefit from UI/Systems changes for the consoles. (No details, though.)
  • "We've heard the community" about account unlocks for queue event weekends. They're working on a solution.
  • They're also trying to figure out how to get the story blogs into the game. Salami loves the story blogs.
  • STO is in continual talks with CBS, to support them in the new series. No details yet. Also, VERY COY about the Abrams-verse "leak" found on Tribble (the infamous pic of the android from Into Darkness).

Oh, well, that's unfortunate. Thanks for the info.

At the moment, I don't have a next-gen console anyway, so it's all pretty much moot. But if I get one, it'll be a PS4... and all the people I know who are interested in this either already play it on the PC, or they have an Xbox. :(

I was kind of hopeful because I fully switched to Linux the other day, and STO doesn't really like playing with Linux very well. Shoot.

Another reason why it wouldn't work, consoles are always in shooter mode, which means you can miss if you're not aiming right at the target. Console players would be at a disadvantage, at least in PVP.

Downloading to my PC, to see if there's been any changes in the time I've been away.

Hope the graphics are better on the PS4/Xbox One. I've got everything maxed out and it doesn't look as good as a PS3 game.

Looks like they are installing a new lighting rig for the change, makes it look verra nice. Being able to optimize for console will help a lot, as well. The main thing I'm worried about if the UI- STO is, like most MMOs, about clicking your powers. Not quite sure how we'll be able to do that with a controller.

I think DC Universe Online is an apt comparison. It's an MMO that is on PC and PS3, and the interface on the PS3 version was completely redesigned to take advantage of the controller. Basically, to access certain powers, you'd access different submenus by pressing certain button combinations. Most of them would be under specific categories accessed in those submenus. I could see this being similar.
