Where Do I Start with the Novels??

VulcanMindBlown

Commander
Red Shirt
I've seen all of the Star Trek shows (though I am on Season 2 of Voyager and haven't seen Season 3 of Enterprise) and am a fan of all of them. Some shows I am more of a fan than others.

I mainly like the Enterprise Relaunch-Era, The Original Series, and Deep Space Nine.

I have read parts of The Good That Men Do a long time ago when it came out, the beginning of Kobyashi Maru, both Romulan War novels (loved it, but wish that it showed more conflicts), the beginning of A Choice of Futures, the beginning of Vanguard: Harbinger, and the first Khan novel by Greg Cox (still have to find it.)

I would like to learn the most out of Deep Space Nine universe, and maybe what happened to the TOS main characters after Captain Kirk left the U.S.S. Enterprise.

For the Deep Space Nine side of things, I'd say you want to start with Avatar; it was the first book in the DS9 relaunch, set just months after "What You Leave Behind".

For post-TOS TOS characters, there's no specific running continuity, but there's a ton of options. Some of the first to come to mind: a number of the Lost Era books go into them: "The Sundered" and "One Constant Star" are both pretty Sulu-focused, and "Catalyst of Sorrows" is very Uhura-focused. "Cast No Shadow" is a pretty heavy Spock book, going into his relationships with Saavik and Valeris. Scotty's a major presence running throughout the SCE series (which I'd heavily recommend even if that weren't true). The Vulcan's Soul trilogy is pretty heavy on all the surviving TOS cast members in the 24th century.

And if you want some guidance in terms of "where do I go next" storywise, Thrawn and 8of5's Treklit flowchart is an amazing resource: http://www.thetrekcollective.com/p/trek-lit-reading-order.html

Thanks.

Yes, I was interested in the adventures of Captain Sulu in the U.S.S. Enterprise-B. The rest of the TOS characters would be interesting to follow up on.

Where should I go with Voyager when I finish the series?

What about TNG? I know that William Riker has his own ship, the U.S.S. Destiny.

The Mirror Universe novels seem interesting, too.

Edit Added: What should I do about the ones in between TV episodes?

Riker's ship is the Titan, actually. The Titan series picks up with him and Troi, as well as Tuvok, some minor characters from on and off screen in previous works, and a bunch of new ones. It's a pretty solid series overall; the first entry is near immediately after Nemesis, with a heavy focus on the Romulans working to rebuild after the political vacuum left by the murder of the Senate, and everything after that is based on the Titan heading into the deep Beta Quadrant, an entirely new region of exploration for the Federation. It's very TNG in feel.

For the Enterprise-E relaunch era, you can pretty much just follow the "Next Gen" entry in the flowchart. The "A Time To..." series is meant to bridge the gap between Insurrection and Nemesis, and "Death in Winter" picks up post-Nemesis. You may want to skip "Resistance" and "Before Dishonor"; they're not all that great, though they do contribute to a building Borg arc that culminates in the "Destiny" trilogy.

For Voyager, Christie Golden wrote a brief relaunch, but it's not very well-regarded generally; most would suggest you jump straight to "Full Circle", Beyer's first novel. Her stuff has been amazing so far.

Okay. Longtime lurker, first time poster. I haven't been able to get my hands on a Litverse novel yet due to my current situation (I've been homeless on and off for a year), but thanks to the review threads, recommendation threads, Turtletrekker's Charting the Novel-verse thread, Thrawn & 8of5's chart, author Christopher L. Bennett's posts and Amazon reviews I'm going to attempt to provide a comprehensive guide to the various Trek series. Thanks to their hard work I'll (hopefully) be able to narrow this down for you to the very best and/or most important novels of each series. If I leave anything out feel free to make a note of it. Here we go.

And here's everything worth reading that isn't part of the Novel-verse/Litverse continuity. Again, let me know if I left out anything important and/or great. Or if something's out of order.

Where do you want to start, VulcanMindBlown? I say start there. Find a ST novel that looks or sounds intriguing to you and dive in. If the author is doing his or her job well, you should have all the information you need to enjoy their story. Reading a Star Trek novel should be fun, not homework.

That's fair, but there are people like me where what's fun is doing research and diving in randomly not as much. :p

This is a really nice attempt, but you missed a lot of stuff, and have stuff in the wrong places.

Yeah, I've been meaning to bulk up my TOS section. I'm forced to do this on my cell this time, so the formatting may be a bit of a nightmare. If that's the case, I sincerely apologize.

The Next Generation (post-film series)
Losing the Peace by William Leisner (2009)
(Note: place between the Destiny & Cold Equations trilogies)

Here's a time travel-based spin-off that I forgot. Placing it in any particular Trek Era seems rather pointless given the premise.

The "Rihannsu-verse" section is probably out of order and missing some novels by Diane Carey and Vonda McIntyre, but I'm tired and work tomorrow. I'll re-tackle that one another day.

"Time's Enemy" was pretty cool, which was part of the Fury crossover event, but they're not all required reading. Ashes of Eden was an interesting post-Trek VI pre-Generations look at Kirk and I liked it's post-Generations sequel The Return, but those shatnerverse novels got a bit convoluted after a while. Some of the Vulcan series of books, like Vulcan's Forge and Vulcan's Heart sound pretty cool but I've never read them. I want to go back and read some of those novels from before the 90s or so, like the Rihannsu ones, Ishmael, The Final Reflection, even Spock Must Die!

The Original Series (during series)
Troublesome Minds by Dave Galanter (2009)
Crisis of Consciousness by Dave Galanter (2015)

(Note: exact placements unknown by both Memories Alpha AND Beta)
It's pretty clear that Troublesome Minds seems to take place right near the very end of the 5YM, owing to Spock suddenly urgently being compelled to investigate the Kolinahr discipline (as a result of the novel's events). Crisis of Consciousness is set very shortly prior to the TOS episode "Who Mourns for Adonais?", since Carolyn Palamas has just recently joined the Enterprise crew as the novel begins.

(Also, don't forget Greg Cox's recent novel Foul Deeds Will Rise and ebook novella Miasma, as well as Margaret Wander Bonanno's Unspoken Truth, both set aboard the Enterprise-A during the "post-Voyage Home" phase of the continuity-chart, there. ;))

And yet, IIRC, Crisis of Consciousness subtly alludes to the events of Troublesome Minds. I think Dave's comment on that was that the placement was ambiguous, that Spock may have had the idea to pursue Kolinahr in mind for some time before he chose to act on it.

If I remember right, he said he did intend for Troublesome Minds to come first, but he left it ambiguous in the way you describe on purpose to keep things flexible (and because he didn't want to have hard cross-book continuity in order to fit the TOS style), so it's a viable reading yeah.

Let me help:

CLB has also written two more books that take place in the era. The first one was part of the TOS Mere Anarchy e-book miniseries, which followed the TOS crew's interactions with a planet throughout their history.

There are several more TNG books from that era that I know tie into the novelverse. The first one is the second book in the Gateways miniseries, which saw each of the then current series deal with the Iconian Gateways.
  • Gateways (The crossover featured DS9 Relaunch and NF novels):

  4. Demons of Air and Darkness (DS9 Relaunch)
  5. No Man's Land (Voy) by Christie Golden

Trek Spin-Off
]Department of Temporal Investigations by Christopher L. Bennett
  • Novel: Forgotten Time (2012)
  • Novella: The Collectors (2014)
You missed the first novel Watching the Clock and the second novel is Forgotten History, not Forgotten Time. The series actually takes place pretty solidly in the post-Destiny 24th century, just with bits of time travel and flashbacks to other eras.

Outside of Any Novel Continuity (all completely separate works)

The "Rihannsu-verse" section is probably out of order and missing some novels by Diane Carey and Vonda McIntyre, but I'm tired and work tomorrow. I'll re-tackle that one another day.
Damn, this just took me about 2.5 - 3 hours to put together, I think this is officially the longest I have every worked on a single post.

I'm pretty sure there have been some other TOS books that tie into the Novelverse, but I'm not sure which they are

Damn, this just took me about 2.5 - 3 hours to put together, I think this is officially the longest I have every worked on a single post.

You got alot closer in this list than OCDTrek did, but theres even more, depending on how far you want to let the web of references branch out. I've spent hundreds of hours building what I hope is the master list.

I would recommend starting your Enterprise reading with the Mangles and Martin books as they're excellent.
The DS9 relaunch is also excellent.
It's not connected to it, but I'm currently re-reading the DS9 Millennium trilogy. It's set near the end of season 6 and has a really epic scope yet still grounded in interesting characterization, involving a secret section of DS9, lost mythical orbs and the cast time traveling to a dystopian Federation losing a war and facing the end of the universe, includes fun cameos from TNG and Voyager characters. The Pale Moonlight, set in the middle of season 6, is also a great read, the definitive Dominion War novel.

Let me help:

The Rise of the Federation is actually the second era in the Enterprise relaunch, before that was a series that covered the Romular War and the events leading up to it.
Books:
  • Last Full Measure by Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels (Relaunch prequel set during Season 3)
  • The Good That Men Do by MAM & AM
  • Kobayashi Maru by MAM & AM
  • The Romulan War: Beneath The Raptor's Wing by MAM
  • TRW: To Brave the Storm

I'm pretty sure there have been some other TOS books that tie into the Novelverse, but I'm not sure which they are

CLB has also written two more books that take place in the era. The first one was part of the TOS Mere Anarchy e-book miniseries, which followed the TOS crew's interactions with a planet throughout their history.
Mere Anarchy:
  1. Things Fall Apart by Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore (pre-TOS)
  2. The Center Cannot Hold by Mike W. Barr (during TOS)
  3. Shadows of the Indignant by Dave Galanter (between TOS and The Motion Picture)
  4. The Darkness Drops Again By CLB (between TMP and The Wrath of Khan)
  5. The Blood Dimmed Tide by Howard Weinstein (between The Final Frontier and The Undiscovered Country)
  6. It's Hour Come Round by Margaret Wander Bonanno (after the Generations prolouge)
Bennet's second TMP era story as also part of the 24the century Department of Temporal Investigations series I'll cover later.

Vulcan's Heart is actually part of a series informally known as the Vulcan's Noun series all of which are written by Sherman and Shwatz.
Books:
  • Vulcan's Forge
  • Vulcan's Heart
After the first two books the series becomes the Vulcan's Soul trilogy, which takes place after the Dominion War
Vulcan's Soul:
  1. Exodus
  2. Exiles
  3. Epiphany

Along with the main novels there were also a crossover with the 23rd century SCE crew that acted as a prequel for the series.
  • Distant Early Warning
The series also had an e-book novella follow up focused on the TOS characters
  • In Tempest's Wake
After that, Ward & Dilmore and Mack launched a spinoff series focused on two starship crews after the end of Vanguard. The series flips back and forth with each book, with Mack writing one and Wardimore covering the other.
Seekers:
  1. Second Nature by Mack
  2. Point of Divergence by Wardimore
  3. Long Shot by Mack
  4. All That's Left by Waridmore

The Sorrows of Empire was actually part of a bigger MU saga, the first two books featured three short novellas.
Mirror Universe:
  • Glass Empires
  1. Age of the Empress (Enterprise) by Wardimore, story by Mike Sussman (the writer of the Ent. Mirror Universe episodes)
  2. The Sorrow of Empire novella version (TOS) by Mack
  3. The Worst of Both Worlds (TNG) by Greg Cox
  • Obsidian Alliances
  1. The Mirror Scaled Serpent (Voy) by KRAD
  2. Cutting Ties (New Frontier) by Peter David
  3. Saturn's Children (DS9) by Sarah Shaw (actually an pseudonym for David Mack)
These were followed up by a short story collection that covered the other series not covered by the first two, and featured sequels to the some of the novellas.
  • Shards and Shadows
  1. Ill Winds (April-era TOS) by Wardimore
  2. The Greater Good (Piker-era TOS) by MWB
  3. The Black Flag (Van) by James Swallow
  4. The Traitor (STG) by Michael Jan Friedman
  5. The Sacred Chalice (The Worst of Both Worlds sequel) by Rudy Josephs
  6. Bitter Fruit (The Mirror Scaled Serpent sequel) by Susan Wright
  7. Family Matters (Klingon Empire) by KRAD
  8. Homecoming (NF) by PD
  9. A Terrible Beauty (Keiko Ishikawa/O'Brien) by Jim Johnson
  10. Empathy (Titan) by CLB
  11. For Want of a Nail (K'Ehleyr & Barclay) by DM
  • Following Shards and Shadow the expanded version The Sorrows of Empire was released.
  • Rise Like Lions by DM tied up most of the storylines introduced by the MU novellas and short stories and also set up future stories.
There were several more TLE novels you missed, and Day of the Vipers is the first book in a trilogy. While it was mainly marked as TNG, TBA is also a TLE novel.
  • The Sundered by MAM & AM
  • Well of Souls by Ilsa J. Bick
  • Deny Thy Father by Jeff Mariotte
  • Catalyst of Sorrows by MWB
  • Terok Nor trilogy
  1. Day of the Vipers by James Swallow
  2. Night of the Wolves by SD Perry & Britta Dennison
  3. Dawn of the Eagles by SDP & BD
  • One Constant Star by DRGIII
You missed the Stargazer series, which covers the beginnings of Picard's captaincy of the USS Stargazer. All of the SGZ stories are written by Michael Jan Friedman.
  • TNG: Reunion (TNG series era book that introduced the characters who would go on to star in SGZ.
  • TNG: Requiem (another series era novel that features the SGZ crew in the prologue)
  • The Valiant (marked as a TNG book, but actually the first Stargazer novel)
  • Double Helix/TNG: The First Virture (Stargazer story that served as a prolouge for the Double Helix miniseries)
  • Gauntlet (Fist book actually marked as SGZ)
  • Progenitor
  • Three
  • Oblivion
  • Enigma
  • Maker
The Tales of The Domion War, Tales from the Captain's Table anthologies also feature SGZ short stories.

There are several more TNG books from that era that I know tie into the novelverse. The first one is the second book in the Gateways miniseries, which saw each of the then current series deal with the Iconian Gateways.
  • Gateways (The crossover featured DS9 Relaunch and NF novels):
  1. One Small Step (TOS) by Susan Wright
  2. Chainmail (Challenger) by Diane Carey (This is the second book of the Challenger series, which was itself a spin-off from the TOS miniseries New Earth. I believe it was intended to be an ongoing series, but never made it past this book)

  5. No Man's Land (Voy) by Christie Golden
  6. Cold Wars (NF) by PD
  7. What Lay Beyond by all of the above (Each book ended with a cliffhanger that was resolved in a novella featured here)

  • Q Continuum trilogy by GC (I believe we have gotten references to these)
  1. Q-Space
  2. Q-Zone
  3. Q-Strike
These were the last three books in a nine book series leading into the events of Nemesis.
  • A Time To...

  2. Die by JV
  3. Sow by Wardimore
  4. Harvest by Wardimore
  5. Love by RG
  6. Hate by RG

You also missed a bunch of TNG novels set between Nemesis & Destiny

Destiny is not just a TNG trilogy, it is a massive crossover featuring characters from TNG, DS9, Titan, and Enterprise. It was a huge game changer for the entire novelverse from that point on.

Already covered this one earlier.

Assignment: Eternity, Rings of Time, and To Reign in Hell all tie into Cox's Khan duology The Eugenics Wars: The Rise and Fall of Khan Noonien Singh. TEW follows Khan's rise to power and eventual exile from Earth. Assignment: Eternity features Gary Seven and Roberta Lincoln, who went on to be major characters in TEW, one of the characters who appeared in TEW went on to also appear in TRoT. TRiH is a follow up on TEW which follows Khan between Space Seed & TWoK

You missed the first novel Watching the Clock and the second novel is Forgotten History, not Forgotten Time. The series actually takes place pretty solidly in the post-Destiny 24th century, just with bits of time travel and flashbacks to other eras.

Damn, this just took me about 2.5 - 3 hours to put together, I think this is officially the longest I have every worked on a single post.[/QUOTE]

My goal wasn't to give a complete listing of all the core works of the Lit-verse. It was to give a listing of all the novels that are considered the absolute best of the best. I figured that trying to get into some long-running franchises (particularly Star Trek, Doctor Who and James Bond) can be somewhat daunting do to the sheer amount projects that have been made over the years. Let alone trying to get into a massive Expanded Universe like those of Star Trek, Star Wars and Doctor Who.

If someone were to ask me, "Where do I start with the Star Trek shows and movies?" I wouldn't tell them that it's all part of the same continuity and they should pick at random. What if their random choice was Threshold, Star Trek V or Nemesis? They'd probably never give Star Trek a try again!

I'd guide them to the following:
The Original Series (Seasons 1-2, The Enterprise Incident, TAS: Yesteryear)

The Movie Series (Treks II-IV and VI)

The Next Generation (Q Who?, The Measure of a Man, Seasons 3-6, All Good Things..., Star Trek: First Contact)

Deep Space Nine (Emissary, Duet, Necessary Evil, Seasons 2-7 starting with Blood Oath)

Voyager (Year of Hell, Timeless, Scorpion, Blink of an Eye, Message in a Bottle, maybe a couple others)

Enterprise (Broken Bow, The Andorian Incident, The Expanse, Seasons 3-4 minus These Are the Voyages)

As for Watching the Clock and The Eugenics Wars Duology, I left them out do to their Amazon numbers not being anywhere near most of Greg and Christopher's other related works. Some reviewers loved them as much as the rest of their work; some felt that they suffered from too much continuity porn.

With Destiny, I know that it's a crossover event between all the series, but it's mostly about TNG and Titan. There's a subplot involving Enterprise character, but it's in another time period and only involves a couple ENT characters. And DS9 was still on a post-Palmieri hiatus so all the charactera were still kind of off limits. Expect for Ezri, but no one cared about Ezri until David Mack got his hands on her with Destiny.

As for The Typhon Pact/Fall books, I grouped them where I felt they most made sense. Some are standalone adventures (like the Garak novel The Crimson Shadow), while others are left incomplete stories without some others. Like how the Titan novel The Poisoned Chalice ends on a cliffhanger that sets up (and is continued/resolved in) Peaceable Kingdoms. Thus it's a duology that's part of both series. It's an old school "tune into the other show to find out how our heroes get out of this one" kind of crossover event.

And some are the same exact ongoing storyline. David R. George III's DS9 Typhon Pact "Trilogy" may not have originally been designed to be one, but it sure as hack reads that way.

As for the rest, it seems to be the general consensus that Wildfire was the best of SCoE, New Frontier fell apart after Stone and Anvil (which works nicely as a finale), the Martin/Mangels ENT novels and Golden VOY novels aren't that great (and aren't necessary to understand Bennett and Beyer's superior novels), DS9: "Season 8" got muddled and inconsistent after Unity, Titan is VERY hit-and-miss (I tried to provide just the hits), the TNG "A Time to..." series is rough going outside of the final three, and the post-series Time to.../pre-Destiny TNG novels aren't all that good.
