Newsweek picks the top 10 captain candidates

Richard Ayoade

Peter Serafinowicz

Michael Sheen

Matt King

Sophie Okonedo

Gemma Chan

David Morrissey

Dev Patel

Benedict Wong

David Tennant would be an interesting choice, certainly casting against type for your typical Starfleet captain, but maybe it's time for a quirkier less straight laced captain.

It really depends on what accent the SCOTTISH actor comes up with.

I've seen the same thing. I'd lay odds Nichol's whole story is apocryphal.

No, I've watched the story evolve over the decades from "what would Dr King do?" to "a phone call from Dr. King." to "a face to face with Dr. KIng". Stories often grow in the telling. So I don't think of it as a lie. I would like nothing more than for Dr. King to be a Trek fan, that would be cool beyond belief. But nothing I've read by Dr. King hiumself seems to indicate this was true. And as I pointed out, there are much better examples of African-Americans in non stereotypical roles than Uhura on Star Trek. Roles that predate Star Trek and are co-starring parts. Roles in shows much more successfull than Star Trek.

Talking about skin colour rather than ethnicity might skew the numbers. Isn't Siritis at least partly Greek, and do people of Jewish descent count as white because their skin is light? I recall my Nan being offended watching an episode of TNG that featured Leah Brahms alongside Geordi, Worf, Ensign Rager, and April Grace's transporter chief. Diversity is a bit limitedi n Trek. They probably needed more asian and south asian characters but the lack of women outside the 2:1 main cast is more notable. Trek needs 50/50 this time round. Other shows are managing it.

"White" has always been a mutable concept, changing depending on timeframe and location. In America the Irish, Jews, Eastern European and Southern Europeans were deemed not "white" at times. There may still be areas of the country where this is still "true".

These matters could be handled with careful casting. Of the main characters, guest stars, extra. More ethnic/racial diversity, and equal numbers for the genders.

I would also like to see a few cosmopolitan touches, such as appeared in Firefly. For example, kanji. Also, ethnic costumes.

An implication would be that there is more than one Earth culture represented.

Christine turns up for the first table read.... Her new workmates are the rest of the cast from the Good Wife.

"Good grief, I thought I was free of you bozos."

They could go with an all alien cast of characters, where they are all blue, green, purple, red, and yellow. Personally I would love to see that.

I hear Nathan Fillion might be looking for a job soon....
if it true that he's going to portray the new captain of the series, I wonder if a) he'll be able to get some of his old co-workers from Firefly and Castle (I wouldn't mind seeing him work again with Stana Katic) a guest role. and b) his characters name will have a J in it. (I.E. Jonathan Archer, James T. Kirk, Jean-Luc Picard, John Harriman, Kathryn Janeway).

People were already horrified when I suggested five division colors, so I don't see many people liking that idea. I made Power Rangers, you made flesh muppets. ;)

But I'd actually like that, combine your skin colors with my division colors, it would be the most colorful show on tv.:rommie:

Or multiple colored species (and multiple colors within a species), but just have a single uniform color, including no colored "piping."

What do you mean "if it's true"?

What even is there to be true or false about?

There's that one """""rumour""""" which was actually just a blog piece by some fanboy who wanted Fillion as captain. That amounts to nothing.

Just as a personal preference, I prefer more unknown actors. For one thing, there are really an endless supply of better actors than anybody you see in TV and movies (just go see a play).

But more than that, I think it helps to add to the mood. I associate Leonard Nimoy with pretty much nothing but Star Trek. I like it that way. Jon Hamm is a great actor, I'm sure he could convince me, but he would always be Jon Hamm. I know it sounds like I discredited the whole theory of acting. Maybe it is stupid. But I just would like a fresh set of people because it adds some exotic-ness. Maybe that is nonsense.

If it were a known actor I think they should get Naveen Andrews. Not just for diversity, but because he can play a compelling spectrum.

If Nathan Fillion were on the show, it's likely he would be the only well known actor, with lessor known actors in other roles. He would command a fairly big pay check.

What part of this phrase is hard for you to understand? If I said "if it's true that the sets are going to be painted blue ..." this would be beyond your kin?

I'm saying where do you get this idea of it being true?

It can't be true or false because there's nothing to go on.

It's like saying "if it's true @TwoJakes is captain, I wonder if he'll be called Captain Reynolds".

On the odd chance that it's a full reboot, then there is only one suggestion I would have for a new Khan Noonien Singh, when the reboot crew runs into a rebooted DY-100 Botany Bay in deep space:

This is who should have been cast in Into Darkness - it would be nice to have an Indian actually play an Indian for once, and I thought he might even have a chance, since he had worked with JJ before.

He has also played a Sikh like Khan before in The English Patient:

Resurrecting the Naveen Andrews for Khan Noonien Singh campaign of 2012.

While Khan was supposedly a Indian, I've always questioned whether he was a Sikh. He didn't wear the typical beard, and McGivers didn't impress me as being knowledgeable about ... really anything.
