I just saw a picture of Malcolm McDowell as Alex in Clockwork Orange. I remembered how much I liked that movie and how high were my expectations of Generations were when I heard he was cast -- and how much I was let down by the actual movie. But I don't want my very bad opinion of that movie to influence anything. I just LOVE the Star Trek movie Villains so I thought of making this useless poll. Votes would be nice, but comments would be nicer.

Worst? How do you mean? Badly written? Or the villain with the most serious repercussions for our heroes within the particular universe?

Just a note: V'Ger isn't actually a 'villain' as we know. It came to Earth 'assimilating' everything on its path. It's purpose wasn't to destroy everything to rule the entire galaxy, so I guess it should not be included in this list.

I'll read anything you feel like commenting. Good Bad Villains and Bad Good Villains included.

When I started to list the villains though it would only have 10 options, or less than that because ST1 and ST4, but when I thought about ST5 I noticed that movie don't have a clear antagonist. So I threw some other characters (is VGer a character?) for fun.

Anyway, I just like to talk about the villains.

How could you miss Ru'afo from Insurrection?!? That's my pick.

Was he a good baddie?

I confess I don't remember anything about that movie. It's the only ST movie I missed watching in the theater and for extremely offtopic personal painful reasons.

Once I solved that personal issue (stupid ex) I rented a VHS. But that was 15+ years ago

I read once that the opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference, V'ger had that in buckets.

Of the movies villians arguably V'ger was the most self-absorbed, indifferent to the vast numbers of intelligant individuals it was casually killing.

The whale probe might have been the worst, in that we never really got a grip on exactly who or what it was. Another machine like V'ger, were there sentient beings inside running it? Even V'ger communicated at some point

We've never led to hate the Probe (Nimoy making a pacifist ecological movie and all) but you have a strong point there.

I also googled the quote. From Wikiquote, https://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Elie_Wiesel

The opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. The opposite of beauty is not ugliness, it's indifference. The opposite of faith is not heresy, it's indifference. And the opposite of life is not death, but indifference between life and death.
  • US News & World Report (27 October 1986)

Note it was published in '86, the same year ST4 came out. Coincidence? I think so, but I also seem to remember from some novel "there is no word for coincidence in the Vulcan language"

About V'Ger, the Ilia probe seemed to be very dangerous punching holes in steel doors. Villain? Or not, just because she was not ugly? (and far from it. Roddenberry could be considered a villain for shaving her head. But I digress)

Or not, just because she was not ugly?
The Ba'ku in Insurrection were the beautiful people in that movie, but some of us do consider them to be the true villains. Back to self-absorbed and indifferent.

Personally, I think the whale probe had a large crew composed of cetaceans, their actions in attempting to destroy Earth's ecosystem might indicate that they didn't consider non-cetaceans to be "true life forms."

I know the novelization advanced the theory that the probe was automated (iirc).

Ruafo was a terrible waste of a great actor. The character had a lot more potential than as some angry guy with a bad facelift.

V'Ger probably murdered billions on its ride across the galaxy, that's villain territory to me even if it didn't know any better.

Ruafo is a bad one, Syboy is a laughable one.

Punk on the bus is surely the most menacing of them all. Kirk can fight a Gorn, play poker with Balok, match fisticuffs with Klingons and outthink computers and all powerful aliens but he is apparently completely helpless with punk on a bus until Spock saves him.

My second choice would be that computer who won't respond to Scotty even though he is being so nice.

But if you me worst as in lamest, Shinzon. He is ridiculous. They forgot to clone the other half of Picard's brain.

I never had any problems with Ru'afo. Sure, he wasn't particularly compelling, but it was clear they were trying to go for old-school skiffy camp. It was a nice departure from they Trek film norm. Of all Insurrection's problems, the villain was the least of the lot.

People say it was a wast of a great actor, but that's exactly why I said Chang, who whole point of existence seem to be to quote The Bard's most famous stuff. Just shut the fuck up already!

I hated Shinzon. Hated the idea of him, the actor, the costume, the storyline. I didn't mind his Bat Doctor though.

I don't really have any issues with the other villains. Some were better than others but none were as great as Khan.
