Does anybody else collect the 4.5"-5" Playmates range of figures?

I started collecting back in 1992 when I was just a little kid. My first set coming at the price of £2.99 each from Home and Bargain (or some other similar cheap shop).

By 1999 when the range ended I had roughly 115 figures (of about 250-60).

When I was younger I opened everything AND PLAYED with them. My collection has had much love. Still have the bigger sets...the Bridge, Shuttlecraft etc

As I entered my teens, I kept my figures carded. The opened ones being on display in a wall cabinet for 15+ years.

The ones I kept carded I looked up recently to see if they were worth anything, the majority were not...so I thought what the hell, these have been stuck in the loft for a decade or so doing no good to anyone...let's open them and put them in the cabinet!

Doing so, I caught the old bug. I'm determined to get the complete set and have been buying loads of figures for bargain prices.

    This is all I need now;

6026 Lt. Cmdr Geordi La Forge in Dress Uniform (TNG)
    6072 Lieutenant Commander Data (TNG)
    6073 Lieutenant (JG) Worf (TNG)

6942 Captain Picard in Duty Uniform (TNG)
    6946 Lt. Thomas Riker (TNG)
6947 Lt. Commander Data in Red Uniform (TNG)
    6428 Dr. Katherine Pulaski (StarTrek)

16045 Lieutenant Commander Montgomery Scott (StarTrek)
16046 Lieutenant Commander Hikaru Sulu (StarTrek)

    6205 Lieutenant Jadzia Dax (DS9)
    6208 Dr. Julian Bashir (DS9)
    6204 Chief Miles O'Brien (DS9)
6247 Q in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine Starfleet Uniform (DS9)
6226 Chief Miles O'Brien in Starfleet Dress Uniform (DS9)
16466 Chakotay as a Maquis (Voyager)
    6456 Khan (Classic StarTrek)
    65106 Chief Miles O'Brien from Tribble-ation (StarTrek)
65117 Cadet Beverly Howard Crusher (StarTrek)
65268 Lt. Jadzia Dax in Dress Uniform (StarTrek)
    65123 Kang (StarTrek)
65804 Data in Movie Uniform (StarTrek)
65174 Kirk in interphase and Mr. Spock Target Exclusive
65172 Kirk and Spock in Amok Time New Force Exclusive
Nintendo/SEGA Video Game: Commander Sisko/Starfleet Duty Uniform
Paramount Video Set: Video Worf (silver version)
    New Force: Janeway (from Flashback)
Toyfare Seven of Nine in Purple Outfit
    Starfleet Officers Collectors Set

So about 40-50 figures to complete my set!

So, does anyone else collect this range? Got any stories about them?

Will have to get a pic up of my collection too.

Wow, somehow I missed this thread.

I bought a lot of them in the nineties, and it has always miffed me that no other Trek action figure lines since then have been in that (admittedly unique) 4.5" scale, as I would like to set up some scenes and dioramas including both older and newer figures.

I got them at the time (mostly the TOS characters, as that's been my main Trek interest for most of the last two decades), but for my money they've been completely overshadowed by the 6" Art Asylum figures. Those are the ones that I still have displayed on my shelves today, while my Playmates figures have been boxed up ever since my last move in 2003.

I've got all of them apart from the Transporter series (no interest in it) and the Captain Calhoun figure which I didn't even know existed until last year. I also make my own custom figures from existing parts since I just couldn't live without all the characters and versions of characters Playmates never got a chance to make. I wish the 4.5 inch line would return.

I ended up acquiring a lot of my playmates swag over the years through yard sales. When I was a kid and got into Trek in the late ninties, it was around the time of insurrection, and for one reason or another, stores in my area had very few trek products. There were some insurrection figures/phasers/ships, but aside from a few random figures at Target, that's all I could find retail wise.

But I did manage to get a lot of great items through yard sales/flea markets. I picked up the TNG Bridge playset, The transporter room, engineering, the space talk Enterprise D, Voyager, Defiant, and a TNG tricorder which I think was my first ever purchase on ebay. I also managed to acquire the TNG shuttlecraft, and a complete TNG Bridge crew, granted most were purchase loose and with some or most accessories missing. But still how many phasers/tricorders/desktop computers/frying pans does your crew need? That was a big deal back in 2000 lol. I also managed to get some other random odds and ends through the years playmates released, but I have nowhere near the amount as the OP.

While I appreciate the detail and amazing quality of the DST line, I do miss the amazing selection and amount of playsets/accessories playmates released back in the day.

Those playmates toys were the bomb. I had Odo, Geordi, Quark, Locutus, generic Romulan and generic Ferengi. I loved the trading cards, the translucent crystals, the scale and articulation. Basically everything. Wait, I think I still have Locutus in the box. I opened the one I had as a kid and then got another about 12 years ago.

Oh man, I forgot about those playsets. I had an engineering one where the warp core would light up. Kind of wish I still had that just to sit on my desk haha.

I remember my mom getting me a set of all the original Star Trek characters for my birthday (maybe?). It had a cardboard bridge as the box it came in, boy did I love that.

Man, I had that too. It was awesome. I made a helm/nav console out of Legos for Sulu and Chekov even.

I never got any of the other characters besides those TOS guys. I was never interested in the later Star Trek series at the same time I was into the Trek figures.

The TNG bridge playset has got to be one of the coolest toys ever made. It was such an amazing replica of the real bridge. It's a shame the bridge from TOS never got a playset unless you count the carboard bridge from the boxset. I never got my hands on the Engineering playset or the Runabout but I hope to grab them someday.

You can still find these things on ebay, and once in a while at mom and pop antique stores, comic book stores, etc., at pretty much the same price as brand new action figures.

For the most part, they don't seem to have gone up a lot in value. I have several that I kept in the package. But I might have to hold onto them for another twenty years for any real return. :scream:

I have a crapton of the 4.5 inch figures, all bought when they originally were released. My son has them now at his house. I got small ship models, a shuttlecraft for the figures, a DS9 model, Federation, Klingon, and Bajoran phasers, tricorder, the TOS figures sold as bridge set, TNG transporter room. Hard to remember it all as my son took it all with him.

The only things I have at home are five nine inch figures: 7 of 9, Dukat, Garak, Kira, and Dax. Want to get more of these, with the generic Borg figure next on the list, along with the rest of the Voyager crew, starting with Torres and Janeway.

Does any one know if they made a 9 inch figure of the Borg Queen?

Glad to see I'm not the only one with an interest in these.

    Still collecting as I type!

Will definitely move on to customs when I'm done. It's sort of a shame that there's like 500 versions of Data, Picard, Worf etc but they left so many characters out. I guess it was down to cost, and being able to use parts from older figures on 'new' ones.

I pretty much got all the main characters from TOS to VOY, plus a few of the more notable aliens and reoccurring characters from each series. My TNG characters, however, came solely from Generations and wore the never used onscreen uniforms. Got all the key ships too--the TOS Enterprise, the Enterprise-D, the DS9 station, the Voyager, and the mostly inaccurate Enterprise-E that seemed like it was quickly rushed out before Playmates had a good look at the actual ship. One particular ship I got for a sweet deal (only 7 bucks) at my local K-Mart was the TOS Galileo-7 shuttlecraft with the "Where No Man Has Gone Before" version of Kirk.

I also had at one point all the role-playing toys (phasers, tricorders, etc.). Although I did get rid of a few due to a shortage of storage space years ago, I still have most of them.

    Kop,

I actually have many of the figures you've listed, MISP, and no longer want them (I collect Transformers Masterpiece figures now.) If you're interested in buying them, PM me and I can give you a list of what I have and prices.

I have about 125 figures an I think I have most of the ships. I sold the FC 1701E once u got the INS one (more accurate). I don't have Voyager. That would be cool. I have the bridge, engineering and transporter. I bought the 1701B at a comic book/ second hand store. It was loose in box for $15. I think they were going for around $100 at the time. I also have Picard from Tapestry limited edition figure. Just lucky I saw it at toys r us on the shelf.

    Hi Dukhat,

Would love to see what you have. Though my listed has got shorter since my first post. But I don't think I can PM you as I'm a new member? (I can't see the option sorry, perhaps I'm being an idiot and missing it) Can you possibly PM me, would that work?

ps. to everyone else, I'll probably be selling the vast majority of my Star Trek collection at some point, except the figures. Partly to fund trying to complete the figure collection, but also just because I don't have the room for it. Hate it being boxed up where I can't enjoy it. I have nearly all the electronic Playmates ships for example, boxed in very good condition, including Voyager and Defiant. Plus loads and loads of other pieces. I think I might be able to afford Data in his red uniform if I sell some of it.

That's cool dude. I just picked up the green Picard from Tapestry on eBay. I have the normal Tapestry figure, but it is from the 3 set (of Yar, and Barclay), rather than the sought after individually packaged one. Nice find that though, I love it when there's a story or at least a memory behind getting a figure.

My advice is don't even bother. Grab yourself a Data figure from the first wave of the line, spend a couple of dollars on some Humbrol paint and have at it. I'm perfectly happy with my customized "Redemption" Data and all the money I saved from not buying the real deal:lol:

I have a box full of my childhood ones. All played with and missing parts. I found some still in their packaging at a yard sale a few years back. However, my caring, sweet, loving wife graciously allowed me to buy only a few of them instead of the entire box.
