Spoilers STAR TREK BEYOND

TrekCore have a lengthy breakdown and analysis of the second trailer, essentially laying out the whole plot of the film.

SPOILER warning for those who don't want to know much before going in to the theater. You may regret reading this.

I regret it exists and that you shared it. Every pre-release discussion will soon be spoiled by people who read that dropping spoilers into every topic, some perhaps with malicious intent, will forego spoiler tags.

Well, someone has to say it-I wasn't thrilled by it, especially the last part of the trailer. The first half had a great TOS vibe of Kirk and Bones going back and forth, and the earthy wisdom that Bones is giving is very much in character. It even reminded me of Dr. Boyce telling Pike that there are some things a man will tell his bartender that he wouldn't tell his doctor.

However, the second half really annoyed me, for some reason. I'm hate the Swarm thus far, and Krall's character is not well represented in this trailer. I'm also annoyed that they took Elba and basically put him under make-up and modulated his voice. Hopefully he can act passed it.

I like all the set pieces, don't like the Enterprise blowing up, liked Yorktown and the Franklin, didn't like the Swarm. This trailer was a mixed bag. Felt like they took too many notes from the Rouge One trailer.

If I wasn't already sold on this film, I don't know if this would have pushed me over. However, I am incredibly glad that it is swing more people over to go watch it.

Just dropping the Beastie Boys was bound to make the second trailer seem better, despite the fact it still has the motorcycle jump in it.

I think the film industry should just let directors make their own trailers already. Then at least we might have less trojan horse problems where a film is sold as one thing but it's actually another.

I think the big problem with Krall's character is we're still not sure what he's all about. There's the frontier pushing back line in the first teaser, but beyond that, little else. Does he reflect the general motivations of an entire people, or are they just personal ones? It does seem odd to put an actor like Elba behind all that makeup, too. I hope they didn't waste him.

I actually like the idea of the swarm after I heard Lin's reasoning behind it. In a December interview, he said:
"Star Trek" has a very 1960s sensibility - who has the bigger ships wins. But if you look at the attack, these ships are 40 feet long but there are 40,000 of them. I think even in the way they’re being encountered… What makes Star Trek scifi great is that you can acknowledge what’s happening today. The way we are as a country and the way we engage in conflict, in this "Star Trek" you see that it’s different [from the 60s].
It's a real post-9/11 view of conflict (although it's also post-Vietnam, it's just that the Cold War overshadowed the lessons there) in that it's about asymmetrical warfare. The little guy can take down the more advanced big guy by attacking in ways that are both surprising and overwhelming. Yes, the Enterprise could blow up any one of those ships, but there are 40,000 ramming into the hull. Yes, we can take out terrorists with drone strikes, but there are always hundreds more.

I don't see that as a problem. I'd rather learn all these things when I see the movie, not from the trailers.

Trailers usually never give us a good look at villains.

Look at Kylo Ren and Ultron in their respective films' trailers vs. the movies.

U.S.S. GUESSPRISE.
Do you think the new modifications improve the look of the JJPrise?

It's a challenge, but I would've loved to see if Lin could conjure up a way for the Enterprise to defeat it in the latter end of the film. I guess that's not happening.

Is that a legit modification in BEYOND? I actually like that. The nacelle pylons always looked awkwardly placed in the first two films.

Its hard to say. The shot where the Enterprise is in the tunnel looks like the pylons angle back and the shot with the ship in the warp bubble has the pylons angled back also. We don't yet know if its the same ship or the "A". Pretty sure there will be an "A" in this film as there was the NCC 1701 A dedication plaque on display at the fan event..
