CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

Don't get me wrong, I think there's a lot to love about TMP. The visuals, the music, and the fact that the characters have changed over the years, for a start.

But the people who talk lovingly about Roddenberry's vision in the movies never seem to realize that Roddenberry intensely hated The Wrath of Khan, which has a lot of the stuff they seem to want in Star Trek.

Oh, sure. Can't disagree with that. The "Roddenberry Vision" is much more a collective construct than one man's dream. There's plenty of Trek products for which he didn't care.

But I know it when I see it, and the motion picture involved in this case is not that."

Wow. I just re-read the Audioholics article. If you haven't read it since the first draft was linked to up-topic, you should. The author seems to have grown a brain, for the article is no longer a hatchet job against CBS/Paramount. There are some negative opinions, but they've been toned down. Some of the super-pro-Axanar statement are gone, and many of the "facts" have been corrected. The title is still slanted, but it's not reflected in the body of the text. One thing I found mildly amusing is how he (perhaps rightfully so) decries Into Darkness as a no-plot action flick that doesn't live up to what Trek should be, and I'm left thinking to myself, "But what would Axanar be, based on all the plans that I've read, if not an action-adventure film?"
 
Well the guy made it clear that he wasn't thrilled with the way Alec reacted to being questioned. Welcome to our world Gene....unless you decided to leave after calling everyone here who didn't agree with your original article a bunch of C/P fanboys and realizing that a lot of us started right where you were.
 
I also object to the weighted statement at the end:


Reword that second option to something like...

...and suddenly it becomes less like the plot of some strange movie and more like a traditional con. You still present the two versions of Alec (one honest but naive, one greedy and dishonest) and both have an equal weight depending on how the reader views the evidence.

Neutral journalism this is not.
Or was his master plan to set up a film studio business by bankrolling it's construction costs with the lure of Star Trek IP

I like this better than saying "fortune" so I updated. Alec just read the latest version and sent me some non complimentary emails. I honestly feel torn by this whole situation. I wanted Axanar/Alec to succeed and truly make a fanfiction everyone can enjoy while at the same time not violating Paramount/CBS. Too bad they can't work together on this but I guess we will wait and see how the dust settles.​

I'm not happy that I potentially made an enemy of Alec or people on this forum while we all have a common interest in Star Trek and seeing it succeed.
 
Nah, no enemies here. There's a couple guys that like to be snarky for no good reason. But most of us just wanted you to get the facts right. You're entitled to your own opinion but not your own facts. We felt once you have the correct facts, you'll be able to formulate a valid opinion. If that means you still want to support Axanar, so be it. You'll be walking in with eyes wide open. If not, you'll be like a bunch of us here who saw good reason to jump ship early on.

I'm not happy that I potentially made an enemy of Alec or people on this forum while we all have a common interest in Star Trek and seeing it succeed.
The thing is, initially I was interested in seeing a finished Axanar fan movie. Then the lawsuits were served on AP and a whole lot of things came to light. AP selling merchandise with IP he doesn't own. Paying himself a salary. Axanar isn't a fan film, it's a "professional" full feature length movie thumbing his nose at CBS/P. Traveling around the country attending conventions instead of making Axanar. The insults and threats AP posts online toward his own donors and anyone else who questions his motives and decisions. AP's contradictory claims and reversals, I've lost track of those.

AP is condescendingly sneering at you? Welcome to the club.

After reading the last few pages, This thought occured to me;

If a Jeweler broke into my house and stole the loose precious gems she or he knew were in my safe, and then said to me, "I took them because I can make beautiful settings for them and make them even more beautiful!", I would not be inclined to work together with him...

That's a nice dream but from a legal standpoint it's been mentioned several times up-thread that's not a very good idea because it encourages people like AP to not only infringe on copyrights, they get rewarded for it. Pandora's box.

But what if the jeweler argued that you weren't using the gems? ;)
