Once Upon A Time Season 5 Discussion Thread -Spoilers

Poor Robin... I knew as soon as he professed his undying love, that he was not long for this world.

I'm glad to see Zelena isn't as clueless as she appeared last week.

I do question why that pile of Hades ashes was left on the floor for so long. Regina shouldn't be THAT clueless.

Next week we get a 2 hour finale... so set your DVR for 7 pm, not 8.

For a moment there, I thought the show was saying goodbye to two cast members: Donoghue and Maguire.

I'm happy for Emma that Killian is given another chance, and it may be the same for Robin:

That is a little surprising since they made it sound like there was absolutely no way to come back from being killed by the Olympian Crystal.
I really like Robin, so I do hope this isn't the last we see of him.
It was nice to see Arthur and Merida again. It looks like Arthur is actually going to get a happy ending. It would be interesting to see the conflict between him and Cruella and what an Arthur controlled Underworld would be like.
I wonder if we'll still be getting the farewell scene that they shot for Merida and the Camelot characters, or if they'll keep them around for next season too?
I was glad that Zelena did seem to come to her senses at the end. I think she's actually starting to grow on me.
Not to surprising that they managed to bring back Hook, I figured they would get him of the Underworld before the end of the season. I found it pretty unlikely that they would actually leave him in the Underworld after everything they went through to save him.
That was definitely not what I was expecting Zeus to look like.

I would why Hades didn't do that quick little 'snap the neck' thing with Emma that he did with King Arthur? It seemed to take no preparation at all and Robin would have had no chance to prevent it.

Well, I really enjoyed this season on the whole, but I was not into this season finale. I thought Hyde was a cool villain but that's about it. The mystery of guessing who he was was fun, but the answer was a real head-scratcher; like Frankenstein, I don't feel this characters belongs on this show.
The biggest disappointment is the cliffhanger. Evil Queen? AGAIN? Ugh. It's so played out. Not to mention it's a variation of last season's cliffhanger, a main character becoming evil. This does not leave me terribly excited about the next season...

Based on the preview, I suspected Regina would turn evil again. It would be more interesting if they introduced a new villain, say, Jafar from Aladdin, or a new hero like Tarzan or Mowgli.

That's what this mess of a show needs, more characters.

I haven't really watched the last 24 episodes because parts of 3-4 or four but the finale was BAD! The wishing fountain scene was cringe worthy.

Jafar was already done in the Wonderland spinoff.

Well in that case, it shouldn't count. :p

I must say this was a lukewarm two-hour finale compared to previous seasons. So they resolved the Hades arc last week to introduce Mr. Hyde and the LOUS (and the Evil Queen's manifestation). It felt so anticlimactic that it doesn't build much anticipation for the next season. Sam Witwer is a fine actor, but Hyde doesn't make a very compelling villain in my story book. ;)

I wonder who else Mr Hyde brought with him. Also I wonder if Regina will start dying and the only way to save her is to merge her and the Evil Queen into one person again. Y'know just like with Captain Kirk in the TOS episode where he was split into evil and good versions of himself.

Last night's finale wasn't as epic as Season 4's Operation Mongoose Parts 1 and 2, but it was still very solid, and reminded me very much of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 4 finale, "Restless".

I love the story of Jekyll & Hyde, but wasn't expecting them to go that route with the show, so kudos to them for that. It did surprise me that they cast two actors to bring the role to life (since that's not traditionally how the character(s) have been handled), but it makes practical sense given that they ended up successfully separating the two entities from one another (nice twist on the story, BTW, writers).

Separating Regina's darkness from her goodness was also an interesting narrative decision, although I'm not really sure where they're heading with that given that they've already got a really interesting villain set up in Hyde. I will say, though, that they really need to tone down the severity of Queenie's* makeup, because it was too 'loud'.

I don't know about anyone else, but I really like Violet, and thus enjoyed her and Henry's questing. It was nice to see the return of The Dragon (of course Rumple would know what Tamara had done to him), and seeing magic in New York was fun. The Wishing Fountain thing was admittedly a little weird, especially since I wasn't expecting it to actually work, but the visual of the coins falling into the Land of Untold Stories was neat, as was the water from the fountain turning into a giant funnel cloud.

I also have to give a shout-out to the writers for the offhanded revelation of Violet's dad being the titular character of Mark Twain's A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court, as it pretty much made my day (as did Regina and Emma's reactions to her and Henry kissing).

My excitement and anticipation level isn't quite where it was at the end of Season 4 last year, but I'm intrigued to see where they go next, so bring on Season 6.

* My name for Dark!Regina

This wasn't as big or epic as some of their other finales, but I still enjoyed it.
I was curious to see what other characters they were going to be bring into the show, but I did not expect Jekyll & Hyde. I'm a big Sam Witwer fan, so I got a big kick out of him playing Hyde. He's not a villain quite on the level of Peter Pan, or Cora, but I still thought he was pretty good.
I noticed a couple character cameos in the marketplace in the World of Untold Stories, Esmeralda and The Three Musketeers being the most obvious. I'm curious if these are just fun cameos or if we might actually see more of them next season. Did anybody spot any others? The design for the Land of Untold Stories was cool, I really hope we see more of it.
I liked Henry and Vilolet's quest. After everything magic has done, I can understand why Henry wanted to get rid of it. I actually liked the scene at the fountain in New York. The reveal that her father was the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court was a fun little twist.
Them splitting up Regina and the Evil Queen is a nice little twist, and is a cool way to bring back The Evil Queen without undoing all the good Regina has done. I'm looking forward to their big showdown next season.
I'm a big fan of Tzi Ma, so I liked seeing The Dragon again. The end makes me hopeful we'll see more of him.
I noticed the last three episodes had no flashbacks, so I wonder if this means we're done with them, or if they just felt there was to much going on in the present to take time away form it for flashbacks.
The only thing that bugged me was how Hyde knew what was going on in our world. I'm really hopping that we get an explanation for it next season, because it's kind of a big issue. His plan was a big part of the storyline, so it would be nice to know if there was an explanation for how exactly he came up with that plan.

One of the things I liked about the finale was that it gave credence as to why the Dr. Whale character was included back in season 1, even though he was from the Frankenstein mythos and wasn't a "fairy tale" character.

All these iconic stories (like Snow White, Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein) have their basis elsewhere. The interesting thing TPTB will be able to investigate next year is whether our world's "authors" merely steal the "reality" of these other world characters and twist it to their wishes (like The Brothers Grimm, L. Frank Baum and J.M. Barrie) or whether these authors themselves interacted with these other world characters (Like young Henry Mills or "old" Samuel Clemons aka Mark Twain.) and transcribed said adventures for our benefit.

Hmmm. :vulcan:

If Jekyll has brought back a lot of iconic villains, is it possible he found the "original" Xena: Warrior Princess in his world and brought her to ours???? :bolian:

I know, I know... wrong network. :brickwall:

Still, it could be fun to see Emma and Regina square off against X:WP and Gabrielle.

Heck, Cruella DeVil isn't a fairy tale character but fits the bill of a classic Disney villain, so it seems anything literary, Disney, or fantasy- based can make an appearance on the show. I wouldn't be surprised anymore if Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, or Mary Poppins showed up next.
