Crowd-source project: Create a character and help build a crew.

Commodore
This topic will be somewhat of a little writing contest. I will post the crew manifest (rank and duty title) of a small ship, and then you all can take one (or more) of these people and write up a background sheet about that person.

The time frame if ST:TOS/TAS era, shortly after we met the Gorn and not long after we discovered that Romulans and Vulcans are cousins. Star Fleet has begun to build four outpost stations along the north-east border shared with the Gorn (on the Federation & Empire game map, hexes 3601, 3703, 3804, and 3806), and are also upgrading one supply base mid-way to the border (F&E hex 3604) to make it a full-blown Star Base.

Fifty years prior, the United Federation of Planets unilaterally declared its border to be a circle with a radius 4,750 parsecs around Earth. The UFP's inner core (some 1250 parsecs) was well surveyed, and Star Fleet made a mad dash to the rim and started to survey the border zones. This left a "middle ring" that was largely untouched. There are over three billion cubic-parsecs and some twenty-five million stellar bodies in the region our ship will be traversing, and less than twenty percent has been surveyed. There are some settlements and colony start-ups, not all of which are documented, which bring a growing risk of pirates. And who knows how many new civilizations they may encounter.

The ship in this project is a modified / stretched Priority Transport with a crew of 45 personnel. It looks a lot like this: http://i1170.photobucket.com/albums/r528/Getgen/APT/APT_LF-iso_24-June-2015.jpg (Yes, that was borrowed from Star Fleet Battles.) At this time, it doesn't have a name, just a serial number "F34-TP-292". Feel free to suggest a name. Its primary mission for the next six months will be to make seven to ten round trips from a supply base some 1500 parsecs from Earth (hex 3206 on the F&E map) out to the border stations (and settlements/colonies) to deliver personal mail and emergency supplies. (Most of the routine supplies are on slow-moving freighter convoys.) The secondary mission is to chart out new routes to/from the border bases, so part of their orders is to take a different route of their own choosing each trip.

The ship is a cargo carrier, not a warship, but it does have some teeth. It has one top-mounted 360 phaser (Ph-2 in SFB terms) and one point-defense (Ph-3) phaser on each side (LS/RS). It has four cargo bays each ten by twenty meters by five meters high, roughly big enough for four shuttle craft (eight if you stack them). It sports upgraded engines that allow it to cruise at 300-350 parsecs per day (40-45 light-years per hour) and can top 60 ly/hr for short periods of time. The ship does have a shuttle craft, but the ship itself can also land on planets. And now for the crew list:

This list is designed to allow 24/7 coverage for all the mission-essential duty positions: Center seat, helm/nav, sensors (+comms), cartography, engineering officer, two reactor techs, two boatswains.

EDIT: I forgot to define the Crewmen's jobs. As a "guide", let's say there's one quartermaster, one sensor operator, and three boatswains. But feel free to make one something else if you want. Could be E-2 instead of E-3, in which case they'd be right out of basic training (8 weeks) / tech school (6-10 weeks) and are still in on-the-job training for several more weeks before they are fully certified. E-3 could be right out of school, or had an or two assignment already, but still first-term with less than four years in service.

Here's the format of the character sheets I suggest you use. You don't have to, but if everyone uses the same format, it makes it easier.

Name: Your character's name. Please try to make it pronounceable (or give a nickname).
Rank: Military rank, as determined by the list.
Duty Title: Job title / enlisted rating from the list.
Roster number: Line number from the list.
Character created by: Your name or handle.

Height: In both feet/inches and centimeters, please.
Weight: Both pounds and kilograms, please.
Age: In Earth years, please. If not human, you can also include home-world years. Be mindful of rank and time in service.
Species/Race: Remember that this is ST:TOS/TAS era, but feel free to make up a new race/species.
Gender: Male / Female
Appearance: Short description of what the character looks like.
Languages: English = Federation Standard.

Career history:
Time in service: Calculate based on age and rank. See notes below.
Time in grade: Calculate based on rank and time in service.
-- Previous assignments: As specific or generic as you want.
Decorations: Medals come in three flavors: meritorious service (typically one per assignment, but not everyone gets one), valor in combat, and non-combat heroic action such as risking your life to save another life.

Skills: Obviously, a crew member should be skilled at his/her job. But if he/she is exceptionally skilled, you might note it here. And many people have training outside their day-to-day job, or were cross-trained out of an old job into a new one. Skills don't have to be job-related and could still be listed here (or in Hobbies below).

Family status: Just a line or two about this person's family life.

Personality / Mannerisms: What's this person like? What makes them tick? Are they a loner, a follower, or a leader? Are there little quirks that may seem strange to others? Do they have a "button" no wise person should ever push?

Hobbies / Interests: All work and no play makes Johnny a dull boy. What does this person do in his/her down time?

Background: No need to write a book, but please do tell us about this person. Everyone has a story to tell, and some have secrets they'd rather not tell. This is where all the interesting story-plot hooks are hidden. Don't need a book written here, just a paragraph will do fine. If nothing else, tell us what prompted them to join Star Fleet (even if "just looking for a job to pay the bills").

Note: the min/max time-in-service for each rank is:
Ensign = 0-2 years, LT-jg = 2-4 years, LT = 4-16 years, LtCmdr = 10-20 years, Cmdr = 13-24 years, Capt = 16-30 years, One-star and above = 20+ years. This does not include previous time served for prior-enlisted officers. Medical doctors come in as LT, not Ensign.
E-1 / E-2 = 0-4 years, E-3 = 0-6 years, PO3 = 1-12 years, PO2 = 3-16 year, PO1 = 5-20 years, CPO = 8-24 years, SCPO = 11-27 years, MCPO = 14+ years. Typical pin-on: E-3 = 1 year, PO3 = 3 years, PO2 = 5 years, PO1 = 12 years, CPO = 18 years, SCPO = 20 years, MCPO = 22 years. PO1 is the hardest rank to make; those who make it in 8-10 years usually make CPO early and retire as SCPO; those making PO1 at 5-8 years are on the path to MCPO.
Due to their long live span, Vulcans and other such species double the max time-in-service limits.

I set the time-in-service for the commander and exec. The commander is six months away from first-look promotion eligibility and was talked into taking this assignment as it will look good to the selection review board.

All of the enlisted (save for #41 - 45 Crewmen) have at least four years in and have re-enlisted at least once. Some may have over ten years in. Everyone knows their job. The question is: did they volunteer for the assignment, or were they volun-told to go by their commander??

Family status: Born in up-state New York to an upper-middle class family, Jazmin was orphaned at age seven. She has an older brother, Isaac, and a younger sister, Kasha. Jazmin was engaged to be married, but her fiancé inexplicably called the wedding off; she later learned he had an incurable disease (and eventually died) and didn't want to burden her.

Personality / mannerisms: Friendly and likable; very by-the-book; sociable but doesn't open up easily. She is a non-practicing Catholic since her teenage years but still holds to the church's moral code.

Hobbies / interests: Plays most any sport, enjoys watching American football, loves to read and is addicted to mystery novels. Prefers to listen to classical music.

Background: After their parents died in an accident, Jazmin and her sister were sent to a Catholic all-girl boarding school, while her brother went to an all-male military school. Isaac joined the New York police department; and Kasha eventually became a Catholic nun and teacher at that same school. Jazmin transferred to a military school to complete grades nine to twelve, and then enrolled in a business college and earned a degree in human resources. With the loss of her fiancé, she joined Star Fleet in a two-year program to earn her master's degree in personnel management, and committed to a six-year active-duty contract. Upon graduation, she received orders to Star Fleet Headquarters to do manpower studies; when she pushed for ship duty, they "punished" her by sending her to a police cutter where she thrived on the high ops-tempo. She volunteered for the current assignment, thus delaying transfer to SFHQ by another six months. At first, her request was denied due to her short time in service, but her record speaks for her experience.

Name: Lenelle
Rank: Lieutenant JG
Duty Title: Science Officer
Roster number: 13
Character created by: Bry_Sinclair

Height: 5’9” / 175 cm
Weight: 140 lbs / 66 kg
Age: 29
Species/Race: Deltan
Gender: Female
Appearance: A strikingly beautiful woman with dusky skin, a narrow chin and sharp cheekbones, she carries herself with poise and elegance. Like all Deltans she is bald, though perhaps her most noteable feature are her dark brown eyes that are described by many as “deep and alluring”.
Languages: Deltan, Federation Standard, Orion

Career history:
Time in service: 3 years
Time in grade: 2 years
-- Age 18: Graduated from Secondary Education
-- Age 22: Graduated from Tai’nee University, Delta IV
---- Honours in Stellar Cartography and Astrophysics
-- Age 26: Graduated from Starfleet Academy
---- Doctorate in Stellar Cartography and Astrophysics, Honours in Astrogeology
-- Age 26: Assigned to Survey Vessel Rigel as Stellar Cartography Officer
---- Promoted to Lieutenant J.G. after twelve months due to her substantial contribution to the Rigel’s mission
-- Age 27: Assigned to Spacelab Helios as a Researcher
---- A six-month assignment
-- Age 27: Assigned to Survey Vessel Dshubba as Head of Stellar Sciences
-- Age 28: Assigned to Starfleet Academy as a Professor of Stellar Sciences
-- Age 29: Assigned to Priority Transport “F34-TP-292” as Science Officer
Decorations: One for meticulous service, one for scientific contribution.

Skills: Astrophysics, Stellar Cartography -- Doctorate; Astrogeology -- Honours; certified qualification: navigation, computer and sensor systems; basic qualification: shuttle pilot, hand phasers.

Family status: Born in the city of Tai’nee on Deltan IV, Lenelle had a typical Deltan childhood; raised by her mother with two older half-sisters and never met her father. From a young age she showed a keen interest in science as well as a deep passion for star gazing, which her mother nurtured. Her high intellect saw her excel through her schooling.

Personality / Mannerisms: She is a woman of two distinct halves; one being her analytical and studious manner when on duty, when set to task there isn’t much can distract her from her work; whilst the other is more of her baser impulses as a Deltan, making her passionate and sensual, as well as being a major flirt with pretty much anyone (her Oath of Celibacy is on file and remains intact). When off-duty she is never in uniform, preferring more relaxed civvies.

Hobbies / Interests: Though she spends a lot of time working and carrying out research, she does know how to have a good time. On the physical side of things she runs daily (typically five kilometres), swims whenever she has access to a pool, and enjoys both tai chi and yoga (which she picked up when on Earth). She is also a great one for meditation, following disciplines from her native Delta IV and Vulcan (she usually does this in her quarters, nude), as well as offering a “counselling” service as an expert in physical intimacy to shipmates who may be having problems in this area (though never practical demonstrations to non-Deltans, they are after all sexually immature).

Background: Though her life on Delta IV was a happy one, she was left feeling unfulfilled. After graduating with her classes highest honours from university, she used this as way to really push herself which was why she applied to Starfleet—a decision her mother and siblings protested. However, throughout her career she has been pegged as a “demure and dainty Deltan”, often overlooked or underestimated as her people aren’t typically seen as the most practical or pragmatic. This was the reason she purposefully requested reassignment to the Priority Transport over another surveyor, a move that surprised all of her peers and superiors. She hopes that this six-month tour will allow her to cast off the assumptions others make of her, so that she could even be considered for a deep-space explorer.

At 60 his brother joined the Vulcan military while he joined a cult-unorthodox society of Vulcanians who studied PURE-logic – philosophy of blending logic with raw emotions. For 20 years he lost contact with his brother and his immediate family, and became a shaman: learning alien medical techniques for Vulcanians.

On his 80th birthday he learned everything he could from his cult-Vulcanian family and decided to join Star Fleet with an emphasis in medical sciences. He served as a non-commissioned officer on an outpost orbiting Pluto for five years earning the rank of petty officer. He later served on several Starships as a medical technician to the ship’s nurse and earned a medal of honor and promoted to the rank of Chief Petty Officer.

On his 90th birthday he was promoted to the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer and served at the San Francisco Fleet Yards. There he rekindled with his Aunt and discovered a relationship with his young cousin Kwartaal. He became a mentor to her and helped her in her studies to becoming a Nurse for Star Fleet Medical.

At 100 years of age he’s now a Master Chief Petty Officer and a physician assistant to Star Fleet. He’s earned two more medals of honor and multiple Chief Medical Officers are dying to have him as part of their medical party on Starships and other outposts. His goal now is to see his cousin fulfill her ambitions of being a medical professional in a commission basis and rekindle a relationship with his twin brother. Who now resides with Andorian Sciences.

Ah, wow. With that resume, I'd rather make such a character a limited-duty officer and pin LT bars on him, which would move him to slot #10 on the crew list, Ship's Doctor.

I was going to ask why he's on this tiny boat, but I guess it's to add "Gorn" to his 200 languages he speaks.

I just noticed I have a minor screwed up on the list. I must have copied the next-to-last version somehow. There were supposed to be three cartographers, not two. I'm changing #31 PO3 Boatswain to PO3 Cartographer. The shuttle crew chief #32 is can fill boatswain's duties, as can the machinist and electrician, as required.

His goal is to rekindle with his family and he's not interested in being a Doctor. A resume like that would guarantee a position on any ship but it's something CO's have to deal with a lot with a crewmember, but also feel very lucky to have. I believe a Starship Captain has the power to upgrade a high ranking non-commission officer into a Full Lieutenant or higher, but at this point he could be promoted to Command Master Chief or a decorated Ensign. Do you like the character?

Do you like the character?
To be honest, no. There are some good things in there, tho, that could be used as a basic of a pretty decent character. As written now, he's just way too far over the top. I expected some larger-than-life characters, but not seven freaken foot tall larger-than-life. Upon re-reading, I noticed he has three Medals of Honor!!! No offense, but I was hoping to see characters like you'd see in a TV show or fiction story, not a super-hero comic book.

The script called for a Petty Officer First Class, so I am dumbfounded as to why you made him a Master Chief.

Also, please add centimeter / kilograms to the feet/inches and pounds. Thanks.

By the way: "Vulcanian/ Nubian" ... What is a "Vulcanian"? Is that a sub-set of Vulcan? And is it "Nubian" as in Earth-African or is it from a planet called "Nubia" or "Nubi"?

In the first season of Star Trek, Spock called his race Vulcanians. Nubian is another word for person of color. I didn't want to call him a black vulcan.

I made him a Master Chief is because he's a Vulcan, and learns faster than a human, and a non-commissioned officer and doesn't outrank an Ensign. On any ship, a CO would want an experience medical person on their crew.
As for the height, there are 7 foot tall people, and in Star Trek there were tall characters. This Vulcan is one of the tall ones.

Nubia is a specific geographical place on Earth. I don't think it fits to use the term for aliens.

Which was why I corrected it. I didn't want to call the character a BLACK Vulcanian (a Vulcan for some who doesn't know their original names.) so I tried to be politically correct. So I put Person of Color beside his Race.

I hope this little writing contest doesn't discriminate on characters? Especially a STAR TREK project. None of the creators of Star Trek or the SF genre creators has ever discriminated on characters.

No, of course not. What ever gave you THAT idea? It's just that I would have just put "Vulcan" for the race/species, and then put "dark skinned" or "very dark complexion" in the appearance line. And what would have been "wrong" about saying "Black Vulcan"? I don't see that as being racist in the least bit, if that's what you were afraid of. You couldn't very well call him an "African-American Vulcan", could you? I mean, neither Africa nor America is on Vulcan. Ergo, the only way to describe him is "black" or "brown" or "dark".

I didn't see the need to specify "hetero". I probably won't create any LGBT characters, but I'm not saying nobody else can. (I stay away from overt sexual content in my writing, so it doesn't matter what someone orientation is because I'd probably never bring it up.)

By the way, if no one else takes him first, I have an idea cooking for the Electrician character #34.

I have an idea for a deep-cover Klingon operative posing as a human, who graduated from Starfleet Academy so he could be posted on a tactically important starbase or starship, but ending up stuck on this supply ship instead.

Kor, it's possible. However, comma, after the Tribble incident on K-7, Star Fleet Medical would have ordered a 100% DNA scan verification to weed out any more such Klingons. And after we learned Vulcans and Romulans are cousins, all Vulcans would also have been subjected to a second medical/physical screening. If you can explain who your guy got around all that, write it up and post.

Mysterion: Good character. Thanks.

Hi STEPhon IT,

I received the convo you started with me, however, I am unable to reply to it, for some reason. Nor can I initiate a convo with you. Perhaps if you choose to Follow me the problem will be solved?

Thanks:)
