JD's Comic Book Thread

D'oh! I went to Midtown Comics to pick up my stuff this morning and the UPS truck broke down. Comics won't be available until 2:00! What am I going to read at lunch now?

I'm reading through The Dark Crystal: Creation Myths trilogy right now, but after I'm done with them I'm going to start IDW's Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles. I've actually already read the first two TDC:CM books, but I wanted to read them again before reading the third for the first time. They're fairly short, just under 100pgs each, so it shouldn't take me to long to get through them.

How are you enjoying Creation Myths? I haven't had a time to fully read through mine unfortunately. But I'm always behind on comics. :rommie:

Does anyone know how many issues East of West is supposed to be? I can't find it on the internet. It's clearly not an ongoing series to run for a 100 issues or anything. It's heading towards a conclusion. I'd like to know how long it is to the ending though...

I wish that had been my only problem. A car ran a red light and slammed right into my front driver side wheel well as I was heading to the LCS after getting off work yesterday.
I'm ok, have a rental now but it was a hectic night and I look forward to some fiction escape tonight!

Re: TMNT - a very solid series!! It's up to #54 and continues to be a top 10 read on the racks month in/out imo

Re: East of West - do creators typically state how many issues they have in mind for a series when it starts? Even a year+ into it? Sometimes the creativity can take you places that lengthens, maybe shortens, anything you might state.

I know Ennis always said how many issues Preacher would be. I believe Vaughn also stated how long Y the Last Man would be as well?

I absolutely loved the first two volumes the first times I read them.
I hadn't read any of the earlier backstory material for TDC, so this is my first time learning about the history of Thra.

You should get a copy of The World of the Dark Crystal. It fills in some of the details that CM doesn't cover and is very good. :techman:

Great interview. Thanks for sharing. I've actually become a fan of Valiant over the last few years even though I never read any of their stuff when they were big in the 90s.

Over the last couple of weeks I've been reading Breakout, the first BMB New Avengers collection and I've been enjoying it overall. The one thing that is bugging me is David Finch's artwork, I like that it's clear and detailed and fairly realistic, but his human bodies are ridiculous. Both the over muscled men and the women with the big breasts and tiny wastes.

New Avengers volume 1 (starting with breakout) was my first ongoing Avengers experience. That run is still my favorite Avengers series to this day.

Other than Finch's art, I am really enjoying it. I've heard quite a few people rip on MBM's writing before, but I haven't been bothered by it so far. I've actually been wondering if there was a relationship of some sort between Spider-Man and Spider-Woman, so I did get a kick out of the discussion about their names.

I just got a Lot of 25 (actually 26) random DC comics from a seller on Amazon, and I got stuff I was satisfied with. I liked not knowing what I was going to get, and getting surprised by the comics.

I have the Superman Birthright TPB, and the two Justice Society of America comics in TPB, but the rest is stuff I didn't have. I mostly get collected editions like Trade paperbacks nowadays, but its fun to get individual issues, especially for stuff that will either not be collected or won't be collected at a decent price. Also, even though its technically a random/blind group of comics, I'm glad they put some consecutive issues of some of the comics. I'll probably do this again (or get a Marvel or mixed Lot). I like stuff like this, its kind of like buying Trading Card Game cards or blind buying little figures and stuff like that. You get something cool, but don't know exactly what you'll get. Plus, with shipping this was only about $15, so for less than $1 a comic I got some nice surprises and added to my comic collection.

So I have been reading Superzero, which is a comic published by AfterShock and written by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti. I originally picked it up on a whim and was surprised to discover how much I liked it. It really is a lot of fun and has some great art. I just finished issue #5 and it has a pretty neat little twist at the end which I kind of saw coming, but was still pretty satisfying. Here's link to a Newsarama interview with Jimmy Palmiotti just before issue #1 launched.

Google has a lot of Marvel collected editions dirt cheap, so I picked up Kraven's Last Hunt and Kraven's First Hunt for around $10 all together.

I remember reading Kraven's Last Hunt when it came out. Great story and awesome art. Have you read it before?
