I'm so glad I wasn't alive yet back when this episode first aired. If I had been one of those people who desperately tried to save Star Trek with a massive letter writing campaign I would have felt utterly disgusted when I saw William Shatner 1.) acting like a horse while a little person pretended to slap his ass and 2.) slapping his own face silly.

No wonder it was banned by the BBC for many years! It was shall we say...a tad embarrassing!

I thought the famous kiss between Uhura and Kirk was hardly a multiracial celebration as it is forced upon them by the bullying.
I can see how some of the strange dancing and singing might make intriuging trailers at the time.
It's understandable how this and some other Season 3 shows were initially not shown by the BBC as being too psychologically violent.

When season 3 was made did they know these shows were going out late on Fridays so they felt freer to put some darker torture themes in them?

I gave it a 7. Love this one. Great music, fine concept, very uncomfortable subject matter. Most of the performances are great, the only exception is Shatner's horse... BUT, it could have been a Denebian Razor Beast he was imitating. And that's how they bray. Nobody said on screen that it was a horse.

Michael Dunn was top class. Liam Sullivan and Barnara Babcock were perfectly cast. Sandy Courage wrote music for the final full score of the series.

Liam Sullivan with his superior sneers does it every time! He's also in a brilliant episode of Lost in Space and Logan's Run's Crypt!

Has anyone mentioned upstream that Nimoy wrote the music for the song he sings? No citation other than 49 year old neurons, but I know I read it.

You can cite post #22 in this thread as your authoritative link. Also, Nimoy is credited in La La Land's miraculous 15 CD set. :bolian:

I didn't even remember Shatner's and Nimoy's musical careers. I guess I will think differently when I watch this episode and Kirk and Spock start reciting Lewis Carroll. :alienblush:
I'm Tweedledee, he's Tweedledum
Two spacemen marching to a drum
We slithe among the mimsy toves, and gyre among the borogoves.

Well, referencing Lewis Carroll. I'm pretty sure he never wrote that.

Really, other than "that scene", which never fails to embarrass me, it's an okay episode. Alexander is cool, and it's a pretty typical Trek story. Bad guys have power and use it to abuse the weak. Our heroes are SMART and figure out the bad guys' power and beat them at their own game. That's a good story.

I think people giving it a 1 are being a bit tough. Alexander alone is worth a few points.
