CBS/Paramount sues to stop Axanar

They're getting bought out by Paramount to form a new division to make Star Trek anthology movies à la Star Wars - a matching theme to the CBS anthology plans for the new TV series.

Fan Films shouldn't even be compared to professional productions but views do it. I actually enjoy them and became involved because of the process required to make them. Once the social funding became involved my interests dropped, I'd rather watch an old episode of Eagle than a million dollar "fan" production.

But plenty of people do, crowing how much better this or that fanfilm is than this or that official production. Those are the rose-tinted glasses of which I write.

First trailer is up for my project - cost me a hundred grand to get made with top of the line graphics, make up artists, an award winning director and a model making team of thousands

I hate to go all proofreader on you, but is it Star Trek: A Bad Production or Star Trek: The Bad Production? I like the soundtrack. Visuals were kinda skimpy though.

Like the home town sports team but as I believe Spock stated, "each according to their gifts"

Back to topic, Axanar have been spreading this blog post about: LINK
Excerpt: "They’ve already taken the PR hit with the fans"

And there's that proverbial 'fans' reference again.

The 'fans' love.... The 'fans' want.... The 'fans' didn't like... The 'fans' know....

And now, "taken the PR hit with the fans."

Let's look at it this way:
Approximately (ball park figure) how many Star Trek fans are there? And exactly what is the definition of fans.

Now I know far greater numbers of people who have always watched every or most ST series as they aired, and seen every ST movie as they came out, that do not identify themselves as fans - than I know people who identify themselves fans. They even purchase the movies and sometimes those 'collection' DVDs like 'Picard' episodes. Among the many other movies and sometimes series of other shows they liked and never missed and have collected. Are they not fans even if they don't identify as such? They've sure put a lot of time and money into the franchise over the decades.

I know Real Time people who have or have had pets they've named after ST characters, who have a ST costume, and/or action figures, and/or ST gadgets like phasors and tricorders - who do not identify themselves as fans. They just like Star Trek.

And I know many Real Time people who identify themselves as fans who have no interest in fan films. I know quite a few Real Time fans who have had no idea fan films even existed. I have actually been asking.

I know only four Real Time fans besides myself who watch fan films. And three of them plus me, completely agree with CBS/P.

Of these large numbers of people I know in Real Time who like Star Trek, watch the series as they air, go to the movies as they come out, have a costumes here and there, and a few action figures, and various other things like a tricorder - there is not one I have talked to who has heard anything about a CBS/P lawsuit. Or give a hoot when I mention it.

Of the sizable number of people I know in Real Time who self identify as fans only a few of them have heard anything about a CBS/P lawsuit. And only a few of 'them' seem to care one way or the other.

So I, from personal Real Time experience, have telling even if only anecdotal evidence that says to 'me' that that blogger's statement that CBS/P has already taken a "PR hit with the fans" is presumptuous at the very best by presupposing he/she is actually speaking for 'fans'.

How many Star Trek fans are there? Millions? Does that blogger imply he/she speaks for millions of people? How many of the millions even know about the lawsuit? And how many of 'them' are interested one way or the other? And how many of the ones who are interested at all even disagree with the lawsuit?

Blocked here, will watch at home, but good for you for your sponsorship and presence! Nice to see that Walter Koenig as "Admiral Chekov" was in the running, and nice line-up of Judges :techman:!

On the matter of Prelude to Axanar not winning any awards, one judge remarked: "There's a reason Star Trek Continues looks like a professional show; it's because they have professionals working on it. They do this for a living. They're not fans who sell props or failed businessmen who monetize a hobby and want to play Garth.

That's not to knock fully independent Star Trek feature films. I'm just saying, if you want an amateur playing your lead next to seasoned actors, you get a certain quality. You want professionals? They'll apparently do it without paying themselves a salary. It's real simple."

"Haters. The worst kind, really. Hating with their Hate. At our Campaign Headquarters Studio, just the best facility, really, the best people and I have met and seen the people, we have good carpet made by real Americans...from America the best country, really because I know it and been in it for a while just the best country except the haters and their hate."

"And, they changed the rules, the creating and fundraising rules, the Haters did, really, because I talked to them before and no problem with our Plan, good plan really just the best plan with the best people paid because we pay here in America but the haters want it all for free, no money for the workers who work hard I know because I have seen them and ordered them around and paid them like we do...America, just the best paid workers..."

Wow, that could've been written by Peters himself. As an aside, can you imagine what he was like as a kid at bedtime?
Ma Peters "Now Alec, it's time to put your toys away and go to sleep"
AP "F**k you mom you f***ing hater!"

Whatever the big announcement today is I doubt it's going to help the other fanfilms out much. Even if Peters falls on his sword and walks away (unlikely) I think it could still take some time for the bad taste in the mouth Ax has left behind to clear and the confidence to donate to return.

EDIT - Can we not over analyse my comment about him falling on his sword and then walking away. Y'all know what I mean.

Clearly this is better than anything Paramount, CBS, or J.J. Abrahams has ever produced.

Re the fanfilm awards, I still find it weird that they have no award for film editing, which is the thing that can make or break any movie. They have an award for sound design, mixing and editing, which isn't even an above-the-line credit, but none for editorial. Madness. :)
